This is one of the most moving vlogs I've ever come across. It always facinates me how the purest and most profound forms of art are often appreciated by so few and yet the loudest, most obnoxious and inconsequential are flocked to by the millions. This little 20 minute video is a cinematic achievement.

I loved everything about this film of yours, the area, the weather your music choices and the dreamy camera work. Also I wish I knew how you captured those drone shots where you are nonchalantly cycling or admiring the views, seemingly not using the controller. I’d stack it for sure! Lovely film.

Ha, thanks Stu! Such a lovely trip - blessed with the weather and locations on this one, I had a ball! 🤗 For those drone shots when I’m in the bike, there are a number of pre-programmed shots where all I have to do is set the drone up, press a button and then it will fly in the direction it’s programmed to move in. I’m not actually controlling it but I’m hoping it’s doing it’s thing and that it won’t crash while doing it. It makes it look like I know what I’m doing but really I’m just winging it and hoping it’ll survive 🫣 Living on my nerves…

Wow, I love how flowing and soothing your videos are to watch. I love your choice of music too. I'm moving to Dublin in June and plan to just cycle, hike and camp everywhere, it's quite an exicitn prospect. I've raced the WAW before back in 2019 but never had time to see anything, this time around I plan to take my time and really take in the beauty of the place. Thank you for the inspiring videos, I'm working my way through them slowly, please keep them coming :)

Thank you Scott! That's lovely to hear that the video inspired you in any way 😊 Your plan after your move to Dublin sounds great, wahhoooooo!! So much opportunity for hiking, cycling and fabulous wild camping. I hope you truly enjoy it!! I've done my own fair share of racing around the place (usually in a car) and seeing nothing so I know what you mean. My little wheels and 3 gears force me to be slower which helps, I'm not trying to get anywhere too quickly on these trips. Having any plans can mean I miss so much of the landscape - its a fine line to have something to aim for and going with the flow. Very nice to hear from you!

Thanks so much Miriam, that’s very kind of you. The hiking and biking there seems to have endless possibilities, the way my trip diary is panning out I’m honestly not sure I’ll have time for even for the little work I do. Slow travelling certainly makes for experiences, taking that time to shoot videos or take photos around every corner is almost impossible to resist. I’m jotting down some of your little routes that take you off the beaten path, I think they’ll very useful for when I’m planning trips to the area. And camping on the Cliffs of Moher in winter… that’s hardcore! Thanks again!

Thanks again for a lovely video. The area is so calm and unspoiled; not as dramatic as the mountains but just as beautiful. The heat we've had recently has been a challenge but I expect we'll have to adapt. We returned home after 3 days away and had to cycle 65 km in 40° heat from the station. Time was pressing so we couldn't hang around until the evening for cooler temperatures. I've never felt as hot and my stop at a cemetery wasn't to wash my hair but to douse myself with cold water; Great film making, you seem to have the gift.
@MiriamKennedy2 жыл бұрын
Thanks very much Colin for watching and your message! The unspoilt areas along this trip (specifically the three islands that I stayed and the other islands I cycled through) were so nice to be in. It reminded me that these are the trips I like to do. There are many other well known cycles in Ireland but it’s the places with great solitude that really appeal to me….my hunt will continue for more 😉 That sounded like a tough cycle home you completed in such high temperatures!! Your cemetery visit must have been relished - I so enjoyed my one on this trip, a welcome gift found on the side of the road! Wishing you well for your next cycling adventures Colin 😉

@@MiriamKennedy Hi Miriam. I did wonder why the weather was so not so typically schizophrenically Irish. I cycle also (have some ebikes too, one I put together myself with a few thousand miles on the clock now) and I always bring binoculars as they are so good nowadays, for birding, plants, insects and scenery and don't need batteries etc. I can see the Mournes in the distance from here and I know the sea is there. I admire how organised you are with your gourmet meals and just going off by yourself though you seem like great company. I remember when younger going camping and practically living on pot noodles but it didn't do my guts much good. I am reading a great book called By the Sea, The therapeutic benefits of being in, on and by the water by Dr Deborah Cracknell and it's very good. Also watching a channel LiamBrown doing great walking vids, really capturing the essence and other people canoeing in the Yukon etc etc and yourself lol. It's amazing the amount of stuff online nowadays and the drone thing is impressive and you've certainly gotten to grips with yours. I wish you continued safe and enjoyable travels.

@@geeeeeeeezzzzzzzzzz sounds like a lovely book you’re reading! Lucky you to have the Mournes in view - another place close to my heart. My first exploring in mountains alone was done in the Mournes and actually that started me capturing some of these trips (memories) on video. I stayed for a month at that time in Annalong which was my first and only time staying for an extended period by the sea….loved it! A very special time and so glad I did it - I packed in my job and went to the coast for a month. @@MiriamKennedy Was standing on the jetty in Annalong one beautiful summer day and a Banbridge walking group pulled up with a trailer full of canoes and yes, an hour later I was canoeing with them all along the coast and it was absolutely gorgeous with crystal clear water. Similar thing happened while I was on the Ring of Kerry, a guy I met on a country lane took me sea fishing after first giving me a demonstration of his sheep dog sheep herding skills and wow that was one of the best days ever. I always meant to go back there but never happened. Special times for good memories. Ok I'm off out this time.

Hi Gregory - not one, but two Bromptons 😂😂 Nice to hear you enjoyed the music 👍 I usually hear some music in advance of going on a trip and get an idea of using it - that first piece was like that, I wasn’t sure if it would work out ok, but I think it worked! Galway seems to be the gateway to so many of your adventures and it looks perfect weather for an adventure and plenty of cycling too. You could not have had a better first day and evening camping, what a superb setting to watch the sun go down. The shower facilities may have been a bit on the primitive side but on a warm day, I bet they were still welcome. The coastline down there sure is amazing, gorgeous beaches and what a place to have a swim and funny enough, I was out first thing with my 2 year old grandson brambling. Another stunning sunset and looked a very healthy evening meal and I have been saving this until I had the time to sit and watch it all in one go, as always, a very enjoyable watch, cheers Alan

You’re right Alan!! Just looked and the last 5 videos I posted have had a Galway connection 😉 Time now to spread my wings a bit further afield! Thanks so much for watching this video and your message 👍 It’s a wonderful coastline for sure with lots of remote beautiful wild camping spots to soak in the beauty. That shower (aka hose) - was such a thrill! A welcome treat while out on the bike in the heat and away from my ensuite 😂 Great to be able to witness the various sunsets and sunrises that I got to see and to have a dip in the sea! Lovely to hear about bringing your Grandson brambling - not a term I heard before but I’m guessing it means foraging for some berry delights!! 🤗 Hope you’re keeping well!!
Spectacular footage, I practically know every square inch you travelled. It never bores me. My paternal grandmother hailed from Carna and grandfather from Inis Mòr. I remember when Sting of the rock band The Police lived in Roundstone in 1980. If you can teack down the 1978 film Poitìn featuring Neil Toibin, it brilliantly captures the wildness of South Connemara through the main characters of the film. I previously mentioned Tim Robinson's trilogy of books on Connemara. A great read. We had a fabulous stretch of weather. We ended up hiking the cliffs at Sliabh Liag in County Donegal. It was amazing.

Thanks Damian - I remember you mentioned Finish island to me, unfortunately the tide didn’t allow me to visit it on this trip so I continued on to Mweenish. They have videos of how they prepare their meals and the recipes they use. I’ve only used 2 of their recipes so far but I’ve the ingredients ready for a curried rice recipe now too. I dehydrated a couple of batches of ingredients and it has done me for numerous trips so far, it’s so handy to have so much food available that won’t go off. Good to know they work for you and Susannah Thornton, thanks for the idea! Both of you!

Oh wishing you the very best with your tiny garden conversion, that’ll be great! I kept stalling about the notion of getting a dehydrator and eventually took the plunge. I’m still working through the first batches of food I dehydrated. I’m out in my tent right now and had yet another dehydrated meal last night - I’ve still got quite a bit left. Not as nice as freshly cooked food but I’m very happy with mine. Not sure what the electricity charges will be like for my next batches into the future but I’ll see 🫢 The winter sleeping bag has made its first appearance this season and the sun has just come up to play this morning 😊 All the best!!

Thanks Richella - I’d remembered what you’d said about water in graveyards recently! Such a great treat to be able to wash my hair easily - I’ve a little plastic nozzle that I can fit on to a bottle that acts like a shower head that I can use also, a game changer to be able to have the relief of clean hair! Yeah - a bit of a pain of a busy enough road to get out to some quiet spots. I was really underwhelmed with the section from Roundstone to Clifden through Ballyconneely, it made me realise I wouldn’t be interested in cycling the entire Wild Atlantic Way - I much prefer being on the quieter roads 😉
@chelladugg2 жыл бұрын
@@MiriamKennedy Yes it's a bad road for cycling or walking from Roundstone into Clifden. It's bad for tourists but for people living locally it must be tough having all of the additional traffic that the tourism season brings. In a few years time the Athlone-Galway Greenway and the Connemara Greenway will link up with Old Rail Trail and Royal Canal Greenway which means you'll be able to cycle from Dublin to Clifden entirely by Greenway. Bring it on!

An unbelievable video Miriam! 😍. Are you a documentary maker, because the level of professionalism in you video's is outstanding! Great mix of superb scenery, drone use(but not too much) and video's of just about the right length, all make for a very watchable and superb product! 😊 Lovely that you mentioned Dervla Murphy and 'Full Tilt' as well. Dervla was my initial inspiration, when i read that book in the 1980s,along with the books by the Crane cousins. Dervla died on my 3rd or 4th day touring in Ireland in May, and I wrote a short Facebook tribute to her. RIP Dervla 😔 It also opened my eye's to what could be achieved on a bicycle with the right mind-set. I'm also thinking of Susanne Thornton at this time, and you're absolutely correct in what you say about the strength, both physically and mentally of the lady, after what she's going through! I've 3 friend's of around my age at the moment with this disease and it feels a bit like playing Russian roulette,when you get to a certain age especially. It's maybe part of the reason why I'm sort of trying to pack so many travel trips into my life now... G

Cheers Graeme!! I tried a few new things on this one and it worked out thankfully 😉 All a bit of fun…thanks for your encouragement though, it definitely spurs me on! Full Tilt was an amazing read and I was so impressed with what she did in such a nonchalant way 😎 Life is definitely for living - before I started my own little journey with wild camping and videos, I had the reality check of my older sister dying at 50 and I also had a breast cancer diagnosis. This all gave me my enthusiasm not to waste this one life and to make sure I’m living as I want to as much as I can. So I get what you’re doing completely!! So easy to live a small, safe and limited life - I can’t or won’t any more though 😎

@@MiriamKennedy that's EXACTLY the way to look at it. We get one life! I worked in an office for many years, and used to see people there saying how they were retiring in a year or 18 months and couldn't wait as they'd get this and that amount of pension from different accounts and investments and they'd be doing this that and the other. Then when they retired they were either too scared to do anything...or they snuffed it pretty soon afterwards! It made me wonder if it was all worth it! I'd rather have less money, just a base, roof over my head, and enough money to go backpacking or cycling with, on the cheap, for a few weeks or months🤷♂️. I still remember starting an office job 10 day's after leaving school and my mum and dad being thrilled to bits...'it's a job for life!' 🙄. I remember the thought scared me to death...a job for life... I'm 16 FFS! 😏 At 19 I packed in my 'job for life' and booked a one-way ticket to Tel Aviv, Israel, with a friend, to try and get a job on a kibbutz. My mate was 18 and neither of us had been out of the UK before! Mum and dad didn't speak to me for weeks! Lol!... but it worked out ok🙂
