Honestly, Xenoblade 3 is not only my game of the year, but my favourite triple-A game since the first game. Not only did it address and improve every problem Xenoblade 2 had (which made that game the worst in the series), but it matched the overall quality of the first game and even surpassed it in some areas. Its combat is the best in the series so far with how customisable and varied it is, and while I don't think its story reaches the same heights as 1, it's still very well-written. Unlike 2, we've got actual characters again, not just a collection of clique anime archetypes recycled for every generic shounen or ecchi that gets churned out. It's hard for me not to look at this game and see it as the Xenoblade 2 we should've had the first time round (if Torna wasn't already doing that), but I do appreciate that Monolith Soft didn't rest on their loreals just because 2 was their most successful game. They continued to improve their craft, look within themselves, and deliver a game that justifies Xenoblade being turned from a single masterpiece into a series. With 3, they didn't throw the baby out with the bath water, and reincorporated ideas from 2 in more effective ways without having any negative impact on the experience. Instead of a bunch of patronizing archetypical waifus whose existence and relevance to the world around them are nebulous at best, we get Heroes, who are actual characters in the world with their own purpose and relevance to the plot. All of the potential Xenoblade 2 had was polished up in Torna, and then fully realised in 3. Even though the story is connected to the past two mainline games, it's not reliant on prior knowledge of said games. Everything you need to know to enjoy 3's story is within the game, so newcomers won't be left out. It allows the game to not only be enjoyed as a complete package and stand-alone experience (like 1), but gives returning fans some tasteful fanservice without relying too heavily on what came before it. Better yet, they delivered a finished product first, with DLC AFTER the base game finished development. None of that Day 1 DLC bullshit we've been seeing from Atlus and Intelligence Systems lately (aside from some alternate skins and consumable items). This is already a masterpiece, so anything else they add after this truly is a bonus. Here's hoping the Founders story expansion will be worth the wait.

Yeah, heavily agree. Always think people are really off base when they talk about 2. But I guess they know how it feels now after 2017 when they thought they understood the series after playing 1 game
