I live in Israel, and though I am not ultra-Orthodox, I work with them, and I give lectures to their college students about patents & intellectual property. Zeihan’s description of them today is correct, but he does not understand them, and has not correctly identified the trend. More of them than ever before are serving in the army, studying in college, and going into high-tech. Not enough of them, the trend will take another decade, but it is happening. Plus they are people who do things 100%, not by half-measure. As for the Saudi-Israeli alliance, it is not as firm as portrayed here, but if there is such an alliance, it will defeat Iran. Larry M. Peter, I've been following your position regarding an American withdrawal from its current international obligations for quite some time, however, it would appear to be overstated given the United States' current level of commitment to Israel vis a vis the matter in Gaza. While the United States need not rely on oil from the Near East, its allies in Europe do rely on it and therefore I do not see an American withdrawal anytime soon, but rather only a modification to reflect the current realities of the day. No doubt, those pushing for a "multi-polar New World Order" system (Putin's words) would love to see a post-American world order, but I do not see it happening. One of the chief architects of this multi-polar new world order system, Henry Kissinger, is dead, and the others are greying out. Even in the Far East, the United States has not reduced but expanded its military footprint via new bases in the Philippines. Where is the American withdrawal?
@jeffbeck89939 ай бұрын
Peter overstates things with unwarranted confidence common to Millennials who are instant experts and oracles after 1 minute reading Google Search results. IMO, the rise and fall of empires in history is a fair indication that the US shall go the way of all others before it. If you can get people on board with that, then current events often fit nicely, and his social media followers will gush about how A-maaaazing he is. When he get things wrong and people start seeing through the gig he's got going, the knives come out in his defense. Be like criticizing Trump at a MAGA rally.
@bulthaosen11698 ай бұрын
Actually he is wrong about many things if you look at past video. American commitment will decrease. Yes. But in Europe. European economies are stagnating and is also freeloading on US while not contributing enough to US interest. That is competing with or restraining china. Israel is absolutely essential for US to maintain a footprint in that region. Taiwan will not fall for the foreseeable future too. Asian partnerships are absolutely vital since they are the ones competing and pushing back on china. Not Europe. Core strategic interest is not something US will abandon. All these people saying "looking inwardly" or "focusing on America" don't get the fact that all those actions ARE focusing on America. Multipolar world will happen. That is a guarantee. While superpower status may cease to exist US doesn't want china to get that status either. US wants to be the big pole. Or the pole bigger than china.

Hi Peter, I just was deployed to Saudi. The US still controls all of their national defense and military training. As well as weapons systems..like air defense. Which only US personal know how to operate. The US has increased in presence since the Biden administration. And was still high during the Trump. I do not see that changing within the next 20 years. We also have plans to be a power in th3 mildew east for the next 50 years at a min. Especially with Jordan becoming the new Kuwait (made base model being built). I don't think u got this one right. US ain't going anywhere no matter who the future President will be. But if your saying this could happen or what would happen if the US leaves I can see that. But what it looks like is less US troops in some areas and higher troops in targeted areas. Supporting the nation our troops are in with providing the bodies under US commands. Many other base assumptions Peter makes are also wrong. For example, Jordan is completely dependent on Israel since Israel is the only reason the Jordan's still exist. If Israel stops supplying water to Jordan, this will immediately destroy Jordan as a state. They have absolutely no alternatives. Another example: The bigger the orthodox jewish population gets, the bigger portion of them both serve in the military and participate in the labor force. Right now 65% of them are working, and it increases stadily in the past 20 years. Moreover, as soon as the goverment cannot support them, it won't, and they will be forced to work. Due to the latest events, there is a boost in military service applications among this population. Another examole: the most growing population in israel is not the orthidox jewish, but the religius jewish nationalists. And they serve in the military more than anyone else. Also, they are working just as the secular population. But the biggest wrong assumption is that parameters don't affect each other. Every parameter continues to remain constant. If right now religious people don't work in Israel, Peter assumes they never will. Well, everywhere outside of Israel, these orthodox jews are all working. The only reason they don't in Israel, is that the goverment allows them by paying them. As soon as the goverment cuts these subsidies, as happend in the early 2000s, their will to work will spike. Same with military service. Where there is a need, there is a will. Linear extrapolation does not work in such predictions.

As an Israeli - I am not entirely on board with your assessments here Peter: 1) There are changes happening within the Orthodox Jewish population in Israel - for instance - many women are studying and working - including in the Israeli Defense Industrial complex. Also, since October 7th, thousands of Orthodox Jewish men have asked to be drafted in the IDF - this marks a remarkable change in viewpoint and could result in an agreed upon solution to the issue of who carries the brunt of the burden regarding military service, work and taxation and more. Politically of course - this is a potential powder keg. 2) The United states not interested in the Middle East?! I guess this series is about a hypothetical scenario of this happening but the United States is very much interested in the Middle East and the Abraham accords - especially what was supposed to happen in September (the signing of a normalization treaty between Israel and Saudi Arabia and the future opening of a major economic corridor between India, the Middle East aka Israel and Saudi Arabia, and Europe). This is most likely what led to the Hamas attack (likely orchestrated by Iran) and the Houthi and Hezbollah attacks. 3) One of the painful realizations now in Israel (among many painful realizations) is that it cannot count forever on US assistance. Without it - Israel not only has a problem with ammunition and weapons supplies but mainly - at the United Nations Security council. The first issue it will most likely remedy to an extent to be more self sufficient and manufacture its own ammunition. The second issue - hard to see any country with a Veto at the UN Security Council stepping in on behalf of Israel. This is a big problem which could in the future lead to a weapons embargo on Israel (only strengthens the 1st point - that Israel has to rely on itself).
@minzblatt9 ай бұрын
October comes after September, so that point makes no sense.
@shtroizn9 ай бұрын
@@minzblatt I see your point but well, there were delays and all kinds of issues with the agreement - no one really knows if Hamas/Iran/Putin were set on a date or not. October 7th happens to be Putin's Birthday which could be a coincidence (or not). Iran also dismisses the accusation that it orchestrated the October 7th massacre. In some ways, Hamas may have actually attacked prematurely since there are indications that Hezbollah was planning a joint attack from both fronts. Hamas botched this up. Again, we don't have all the information, maybe if some top Hamas leader is captured by the IDF - Israel can wrest more info out of him.

What is the economic base that allows Turkey to spend so much on the military. Can you do a separate review of Turkey's finances?
@minzblatt9 ай бұрын
It has a stable economy that is unlike most nations around not dependent on selling raw commodities such as oil which it doesn't have in amounts worth mentioning. In the last couple decades however it suffered from bad financial policies, corruption and mismanagement, which made this growth rocky to say the least. Btw. the Turkish domestic military industry is a by-product of the US imposed sanctions on Turkey after the Cyprus war in 1974 and Turks are very proud of this fact to this day with the recent renewal of sanctions linked to 5th Gen fighter jets. 2025 will be the 50th anniversary of ASELSAN, which is basically where it all started. And if we're lucky we will see the maiden flight of the first domestic fighter jet tomorrow. With a booming drone tech industry both in air and on sea (USVs), this will ultimately guarantee them superiority over most of their neighbours for the foreseeable future.

Israel is going to find it difficult to gain new allies while they show no interest in protecting civilians. Especially from Muslim countries. The Saudis risk their own power domestically if they support Israel. Remember the Shah of Iran? The Saudi royals can lose it all if they incite a revolution.

The book of Judges tells of one cycle that Israel experienced a number of times in its first centuries after spending 40 years wandering in the desert: God would bless Israel. Israel would start out thanking God for the blessings. But as time went on Israel would take God's blessings for granted. So God would allow Israel to be conquered. After awhile, Israel would cry out to God. God would then provide a new hero to deliver Israel and the cycle would begin over again. At this point, is Israel trying to fight their current war in their own strength or are they looking to God for victory? What will it take to change this? When you look through Israel's history, do the alliances that Israel committed, to work out for them? What will happen in the future?

Maybe let Israel manage their own predicaments with their own money, manpower and military. Maybe the US should manage our own predicament at our southern border. The way to do that is to leverage our imports from US companies in Mexico.

In israel we are mostly concerned now about the 2 proxies of iran. Hamas and hizbolah. Hamas has been hit hard but is still standing and the current exchange with hizbolah is still only through air strikes and artillery and hasn't escalated to full war yet. This won't go on forever but "the day after" is very foggy for us at this point.

@@joewalker36 It will if it leads to a massive breakdown in the region and suddenly all trade ceases and the American stock market gets wrecked with all the USA companies and allies that rely on the region and the shock to the global stock trade causes a depression and every bubble to burst which considering USA debt is a pretty big one which wecks the USA economy and then the whole region goes towards China or Russia as they seek protection and secure trade and the USA loses all influence in the region and the USA becomes a regional power limited to the Americas until they also pivot toward China the same way many Asian countries had previously pivoted toward the USA in the last 50 years now they turn away from the USA and back towards home and the USA now alone as the USA can no longer protect them or care to and then the USA becomes isolated politically and economically to the North American continent where they wither as a regional power until they collapse like the Soviet Union did. The Soviet Union did not really affect the USA much but the USA fought for global dominance because it was the prospect of the USA waking up one morning to find the whole world was communist and did not care what the USA had to say about anything and everybody has nukes now so even the American military is completely worthless as it can only really operate around the world with cooperation from other nations and if they are all in a nuclear umbrella pact with China or Russia for defence the USA can do zero without risking destruction just like how the USA is tip toeing like a ballerina around Putin. It is about isolating the USA and then letting it die on it's own while noone else cares or becoming so irrelevent that anything the USA says means nothing to anyone and all that is left is all the domestic social problems that eat the USA alive while other intrests become the undisputed dominant global superpowers economically and politically and the sentiment you express is how it loses it all. It really really does affect us all.

Israel costs the American tax payer millions of dollars per day. At the height of the financial crisis in 2008 and 2009, the USA was still pumping 10 million dollars per day into Israel directly. Indirect financial infusion such as underwriting Israel's military expenditures are even larger.

Appeciate your analysis. What I think you don't account for is this: while U.S. policy is changing, withdrawing, true; we are also kind of emotionally stupid and will get reinvolved over, racism, anti-muslim sentiment, one of our merchant marine ships sinks with a chihuahua on it, veterans get an anger hardon for some reason, mexican cartels, almost anything. We are going to be in and out, more half-assed or arbitrary than disengaged. It is not really post American. It is more of a selective and unpredictable America.

The big question is this. Is America (Will America be) DISinterested or UN/NOT interested ? Not quite the same thing. Peter doesn't seem to understand China. If the crunch comes, BECAUSE IT HAS GOT ITS' POPULATION UNDER CONTROL, China has all the food and all the energy that it needs. There are many keys to the Chinese economic miracle but birth rate reduction was absolutely vital .... 37,000,000 Americans living in abject poverty and that poverty concentrated among the breeders. Children do not sow, neither do they reap. They merely consume.As most American are a bit squeamish about child labour, children are parasites upon the economy. We are right to be amazed at the Chinese economic miracle. We also have reason to fear China. What will the American politicians do if China seizes Taiwan ? What if China ignores Taiwan seeing it as too much of a porcupine for the time being and goes for the Philippines. Failure to support the Philippines will be about as stupid as the current failure to support Ukraine adequately. What if, because of American stupidity, the newly gung-ho Russians take over Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan and then take a nibble at a few Aleutians ?.... What when the Chinese come sniffing around Wake Island ? Americans should understand that if it had not been for Britain and France holding out against Nazism for 9 months and then Britain alone for a further 17 months, long before December 1941, there would have been some brave Americans fighting a guerilla campaign in the Appalachians and Cascade Mountains, but, the USA east of the Mississippi would have been Amerika Ost, certain areas of New York having high barbed wire fences around them .... the USA to the West, would have had an unintelligible name. As we saw in December 1941, despite the efforts of Billy Mitchell, the USA did not have an air force worthy of the name and Pearl Harbour(Pearl Harbor) demonstrates military incompetence that was almost beyond belief. With regard to Ukraine, stupid and pig-ignorant Republicans are belly-aching about the cost but all the USA has done so far is open up some garden sheds on some military bases, dragged out some rusty lawnmowers and old scythes, sent this junk to Ukraine, to make room for far more sophisticated sit-on petrol lawnmowers and combine harvesters, the US high command unable to disguise their dribbling as they salivate over the latest John Deere, Mountfield and Mitsubishi kit. On the face of it, F16s seem pretty juicy but they are NOT exactly F35s .... are they ?

Where do you see the US foreign policy doctrine heading over the next couple of decades? There is a standoff in the congress regarding Ukraine, yet we see the US navy policing the Red Sea to enable transit for trade vessels and sending additional carrier groups into the western mediterranean, so in some way we can still rely on the US to get the rest of us out of the tight spots that we can't help ourselves to construct. Will we be on our own (spoken as a European and a Swede) in, let's say, 2040? Also, the "end of China as a nation" would be interesting to hear you elaborate on.

On the dole? The Orthodox Jewish families have working mothers. Highly educated working mothers contributing significantly as the sole breadwinners. With large families, you know they are relying on housekeepers and nannies and tutors, which means they are creating jobs for others. On top of overseeing intense religious education. These women work in tech, medicine, research, etc. Israel has amazing driven contributors! Orthodox Jewish families are not all sucking up welfare... Please also remember that Israel helps allllll it's citizens, including Sunni, Shia, and Druze muslims and Christian Arabs. Seriously, it's the ONLY country in the Middle East where there is real freedom. And opportunity.

Yup, usually when you allow unjust advantages to one social clique they tend to get more entitled and significantly more unproductive. This only widens the gap with the rest of population and leads to pretty rapid social disintegration. Any policy that unfairly widens the social gap is self terminal, period. No religion required.

Interesting but missed a couple of points and options. Firstly, Iran, Iraq and Syria are far more populous that Saudi Arabia and Israel. That is likely to be a factor in any conflagration in the future. Secondly, Israel could make peace with Palastinians by creating a two state solution to 1967 borders. It could then sign peace treaties with most of its neighbours. This would change the view of the Arab populations and dissuade hostile regimes from acting. Peaceful coexistence is the safest option for all.

The American working class and the working poor need to be taxed more to meet the financial needs of the Federal Government and it's allied nations. High income earners and the wealthy are taxed enough. It's not fair to put anymore of a burden on them.
