Norman Finkelstein is an American political scientist and activist. Born to Jewish Holocaust-survivor parents, his primary fields of research are the politics of the Holocaust and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. He received his PhD in political science from Princeton University and rose to prominence in 2000 after publishing The Holocaust Industry, in which he writes that the memory of the Holocaust is exploited as an ideological weapon to provide Israel a degree of immunity from criticism.

They should have recognised that the events of October 7th were the consequence of 50+ years of barbaric and violent apartheid and finally agreed to (1) a two-state solution and (2) the return of the thousands of Palestinian hostages they have in exchange for (1) the Palestinian people giving up the land that Israel was illegally built on and (2) all Israeli hostages being returned. This would have been the right course of action to protect their own people. In fact number 2 (Palestinians agreeing to let Israel keep the land their country was illegally built on), is an unjust ask, however the Palestinians have repeatedly shown they are willing to agree to this in exchange for Israel finally ceasing the occupation, agreeing to a two state solution and leaving them the hell alone to live their lives in peace.

I agree with aspects what Norman has or at least am making an effort to understand. To concentrate on the number of dead on either side misrepresents the type of conflict. Hamas isn’t bound by the rules of law, after the murder of many hundreds they then stole people and committed further foul and cruel acts on the hostages. Stole them like slaves. They then used the tunnels built with resources for the Palestine people but repurposed for terror attacks in the future. Those tunnels were mined, made in such a way to kill as many Israeli soldiers attempting to save the hostages. These are planned additional attacks not spoken on. Why does Norman think Hamas are not zealots and reasonable to deal with after years of saying they want Israel in the sea. Hamas made the tunnels and used them, were the aggressors until met with overwhelming defence. I also remember in the months previous Hamas increased rocket attacks. That type of answer is only correct if the palestinian fraud was true. Ignorance of history either willing or unwilling is what causes this type of answer. There is no palestine and never was. The answer to Konstantin's question of what Israel should have done is really simple. If we accept the premise that the Palestinians have been subjugated and had their lands stolen from them which is substantiated with an overwhelming amount of video evidence available to the common man, then surely a bloodbath in Gaza was the worst of the options available on the table. For a country with an intelligence agency that's renowned world wide, it's unthinkable to me that they felt isolating themselves from all of their partners in the region and relying on US military as protection against the adversaries in the region was the best and safest option for their state. Particularly now that Russia is handing it to the US proxy in Ukraine and showcasing their artillery superiority for the better part of 2 years now - Russia has largely been unaffected by anything that the US has thrown in the form of aid to Ukraine. With Israel's main adversary in the region being Iran who is an ally of Russia, surely it's clear as the light of day that a world war is not in their best interests either - particularly now when the current dominant world order that favours Israel hangs in the balance. Israel has failed in every single one of it's military objectives - failed to eliminate Hamas in Gaza, failed to drive out the Gazans, failed to free the hostages with any other means beside negotiation. It has only succeeded now in shattering all peace arrangements with it's neighbors, emboldened Hamas, turned public opinion from the next generation of US citizens firmly in favor of a liberated Palestine, exposed to the world their hasbara machine and how it works and essentially made itself a pariah state. If they get the war they want, then their state is in an existential crisis. so against that backdrop, the negotiation with Hamas should have been something along the lines of hand hand over the hostages in exchange for Palestinian prisoners including the perpetrators and master minds of Oct 7th in exchange for a peace deal that restores Palestinian dignity and civil rights in the land. Northern Ireland & South Africa both achieved ultimate peace when weapons were put down and civil rights for all were reinstated. This really isn't rocket science. This would have been in the best interests of Israel and given them the best chance of keeping soft control over the land by keeping the economy in its possession - exactly like what happened in SA. Now its staring down the barrel of starting a war that looks increasingly likely that they will lose. How do they fight a war on all fronts surrounding their border effectively??

I enjoy listening to Prf Finckelstein's manner of speach with its methodicàly slow pace which gives the listener time to process and comprehend his ideas. Wonderful man with a depressing message with his encyclopedic knowledge about this topic. His referemce to Nat Turmer was especially thought provokimg. My only comment is that they should have asked him about the propects for peace in this quagmire at the start. His depressing hopelessness would have set the tone for the whole discussion. His comment about the "howling wilderness" created in the Philippines touched a nerve for this pinoy who remembers the context of that comment. That war was brutal and long forgotten by the world except for the colonized people and yet the Philippines became a resolute ally to a fault with its colonial onetime colonial conquerer.
