Israel-Palestine: Can a one-state solution work? | The Stream

For decades, the United States and the West have pushed for, and failed to broker, a two-state solution to resolve the Israel-Palestine conflict. The concept, which calls of the creation of an independent Palestinian state alongside Israel, has been a key part of the long-stalled peace process between Israel and the Palestinians.
While there continues to be hope for such an agreement, popularity of a one-state solution is growing, particularly among Palestinians.
In a recent poll conducted by the Palestinian Center for Policy and Survey Research (PSR), 33 percent of Palestinians in the occupied West Bank and Gaza Strip said they support a one-state solution. That number is up from 24 percent just three months ago. In an interview, Khalil Shikaki, director of PSR, said Palestinians who support a one-state solution are typically younger, nationalist, and secular but that the growth in popularity seems to be more widespread this time.
One reason may be Israel’s continued settlement building in the occupied West Bank, which is illegal under international law. For many Palestinians, the continued annexation of Palestinian land makes it hard to imagine a viable Palestinian state being formed through negotiation with Israel.
On this episode of The Stream, we take a look at whether a one-state solution is truly a more realistic path to resolving the Israel-Palestine conflict.

After the U.S. Constitution was written, a lady asked Benjamin Franklin what they created. Franklin replied, "A republic, if you can keep it." The question is can and would the Islamic Arabs and the Jews be willing to "keep it" by accepting and supporting a secular state with non-establishment of religion. I doubt it. There is no solution. There will be perpetual war in Israel-Palestine. Get used to it.

@esphaeraspraestans4212 Unfortunately, practically speaking based on the conditions we are seeing in Gaza and the West Bank _on top_ of the sheer scale of systemic discrimination that Palestinian citizens _of_ Israel already go through, the One Democratic State solution is going to be a ridiculously steep hill to climb unless every member of the UN Security Council or, more potently, the US military itself oversees the restructuring of the entire State of Israel to naturalize Palestinians as _equal_ citizens with Israelis. The amount of tension would be just like it was during the Civil Rights movement when Ruby Bridges became the first ever black American child to attend a former whites-only school in Louisiana. You would literally need _international troops_ monitoring the integration process to prevent all ethnically motivated discrimination and hate crimes from happening on both sides against each other.

i wish there can be harmony, but i dont believe that jews can be a minority in the middle east with equal human rights, there are to many people in the west bank and gaza that want islamic law and hate jews to have it happening, so i think israel should just leave the territories so there can be an independent palestine, oh and by the way the two state solution is possible: settlers existed throgh out history and were pulled out by the millions so that new countries can be made, in algeria alone one million french settlers were pulled out and if the settlers dont want to go out without a fight than israel can simply cut all funds to them cut their water supplies and withdraw the army from them, it is a lie that a solution is "to complicated" all israel needs for a 2 state solution is a vote in the parliment, people say well... the 2 state solution is dead because... i say the british left canada, india, australia, america, guyana, jamaica, south africa, eygpt, kenya and so on, israel leaving the territories is a joke compared to that, the 2 state solution is the best solution for a more democratic and equal society.

the solutions are there and very possible, but the minds and hearts have to be cleaned first. Once people recognize the humanity and needs of each other, then they can find solutions. God has put compassion to everyone's heart, but it becomes muddied due to fear mongering. Everyone needs safety, but if you tell someone their safety is dependent on the other party's death or expulsion, then they don't think sanely and act terribly. May Allah guide us all.

If i could vote for a one state solution under israel i would in a heart beat, it’s better for the people here. look at the arab israelis who already live in israel and have citizenship, they live amazing lives and if you were to ask them if they would give up their israeli citizenship for a Palestinian one living under the PA, they wouldn’t even bother answering, bc it’s a NO.

This is supposed to be about a one-state solution, but only after 20 minutes out of 25, does anyone start talking about what such a state should look like. And then they run out of time. Very disappointing because that's what I tuned in to hear. Unfortunately, for many on both sides, the one state needs to reflect the history and culture, and fulfil the right to self-determination, of one people while the other is reduced to "citizens with equal rights" - but obviously with no rights as a people. And with neither side having a great record of treating members of the other with respect and equality, even these promises sound hollow. This is what's scaring people, and if you want to convince Palestinians, Jews and the international community that one state is the solution you need to show, in a very practical way, how such a state could (1) be truly democratic and respect all human rights for all its citizens (as well as refugees etc. of course); (2) acknowledge and fulfil the collective rights, and particularly the right to self-determination, of both the Palestinian and Jewish peoples.

I think one state from the river to the sea is an excellent option! The new government should have equal representation of both the Jews and Palestinians. Initial laws and regulations should be drafted by the international community for the new country. Once rules are established, the new leaders can begin to govern and change laws as needed. There should be only even numbers of Senators, Congressman, Supreme Court judges, 2 Prime Ministers, etc. There should be an equal ammount of representation for all bodies of government, for example12 supreme court judges, 6 Jews and 6 Arabs. Sure there may be many deadlocks, they will have to get along to govern. The miltary & security forces should be equal as well. The international community should force Israel to accept this.

I wish this discussion went farther, because that's where the interesting thing lies. I think it's not a waste of time at all to flesh out what one state could look like in real terms. Otherwise nobody knows what they're promoting in actuality. Palestinians could hypothetically hijack Israel's electoral system through a campaign for equal rights, but from their perspective this would force them to have to jump through Israel's hoops so to speak. Of course, the struggle would only begin at that point, but it could be a mobe forward that opens a plethora of political possibilities. Unlike now, when the only possibility is sustained occupation. I wish more people would acknowledge this. In 10 years the same options will be on the table

This conflict, like any long-running intense conflict, has “taken on a life of its own”. However, the basis of the conflict can be stated simply: two distinct and different groups of people want to reside on the same piece of land at the same time, with their own government, culture, etc. Reminds me of drivers of two cars wanting the same parking space at the same time. It has been the Israeli car since 1967, although it gets banged up from time to time.

For it to work though, it must be secular, democratic, treat Arabic and Hebrew as co-equal, co-official languages, ensure citizenship and equal rights to all people of Palestine, and ensure right of return for those who were pushed out during the Nakhba.

But has there ever been any indication from the Palestinian side that living with tolerance and equality of the Jewish people is something they are interested in? It seems to me like the "one state" solution is the "destroy Israel and ethnically cleanse the Jews" solution. Even this extremely favorable survey shows that only 1/3 of Palestinians are interested in living alongside the Jews.

The borders in the middle-east are the biggest problem how the british & french decided in their stupidity to split the old ottoman empire. Would it not be better to all those living ethnic & religious parties to get their own lands, water etc. because these disputes will only go on and on until over 110 year old problem is destroyed. I agree that the west has not been tough enough with Israel on what it wants and does. The holocaust weights still strong and it should teach that genocide is not an answer and it still happens at the so called "modern times" around the world.

Why don’t the Palestinians demand land from Jordan for a State only from Israel? Even though Jordan was part of British mandate Palestine too? So is Jordan an occupied state? Settlements are not an obstacle to peace anyone using them as such is not interested in peace. Land and property can change ownership, which is a compromise reached through negotiations. First and foremost everyone should be working to unify the Palestine people peace can only be negotiated by a unified people.

Arafat should have signed the proposal bill Clinton offered him. The proposal included the establishment of a demilitarised Palestinian state on some 92% of the West Bank and 100% of the Gaza Strip, with some territorial compensation for the Palestinians from pre-1967 Israeli territory; the dismantling of most of the settlements and the concentration of the bulk of the settlers inside the 8% of the West Bank to be annexed by Israel; the establishment of the Palestinian capital in east Jerusalem, in which some Arab neighborhoods would become sovereign Palestinian territory and others would enjoy "functional autonomy"; Palestinian sovereignty over half the Old City of Jerusalem (the Muslim and Christian quarters) and "custodianship," though not sovereignty, over the Temple Mount; a return of refugees to the prospective Palestinian state though with no "right of return" to Israel proper; and the organisation by the international community of a massive aid programme to facilitate the refugees' rehabilitation. Arafat said no. Enraged, Clinton banged on the table and said: "You are leading your people and the region to a catastrophe." Now there will never be a Palestinian state. It’s over, esp with all the settlements and how right wing Israeli society has gotten. The one state solution will not work because Israelis will always be insecure about being a minority in Israel. Thus it will just be a continuation of the status quo.

So for Israel to stop expelling the other Palestinians from their homes and displacing them! So for Israel to stop its apartheid regime, which considers the Palestinian a second-class citizen and has no right to vote or political participation! So for Israel to stop building settlements to expand at the expense of the occupied lands! So for Israel to stop supporting Jewish extremists and storming Al-Aqsa Mosque and desecrating Islamic rituals and sanctities there! To stop Israel from besieging the Gaza Strip! May Israel stop imprisoning young children, civilians and innocents without any charges or trial! To include the elections for all without exception, and equal life for all without exception, and freedom of opinion and belief without any exception to respect Islamic and Christian feelings and sanctities! My dear, as long as Israel is a rogue terrorist state that practices injustice, apartheid and terrorism under international support and evades accountability and penalties, the only solution is the continuation of violence to ignite another intifada against this terrorism until its fire reaches the peoples next to them, after which there will be no state that you support and there will be no terrorism that condone And there will be no crimes that justify them

Arafat should have signed the proposal bill Clinton offered him. The proposals included the establishment of a demilitarised Palestinian state on some 92% of the West Bank and 100% of the Gaza Strip, with some territorial compensation for the Palestinians from pre-1967 Israeli territory; the dismantling of most of the settlements and the concentration of the bulk of the settlers inside the 8% of the West Bank to be annexed by Israel; the establishment of the Palestinian capital in east Jerusalem, in which some Arab neighborhoods would become sovereign Palestinian territory and others would enjoy "functional autonomy"; Palestinian sovereignty over half the Old City of Jerusalem (the Muslim and Christian quarters) and "custodianship," though not sovereignty, over the Temple Mount; a return of refugees to the prospective Palestinian state though with no "right of return" to Israel proper; and the organisation by the international community of a massive aid programme to facilitate the refugees' rehabilitation. Arafat said no. Enraged, Clinton banged on the table and said: "You are leading your people and the region to a catastrophe." Now there will never be a Palestinian state. It’s over.

Can anyone tell me why Arafat walked away from the Camp David talks when a peace deal seemed so close?

pibroch, no, that's not the reason. Halfway through the conference, apparently on July 18, Clinton had "slowly" - to avoid misunderstanding - read out to Arafat a document, endorsed in advance by Barak, outlining the main points of a future settlement. Enraged, Clinton banged on the table and said: "You are leading your people and the region to a catastrophe." A formal Palestinian rejection of the proposals reached the Americans the next day. The summit sputtered on for a few days more but to all intents and purposes it was over. So Arafat's behaviour at Camp David was a "performance" geared to exacting from the Israelis as many concessions as possible without ever seriously intending to reach a peace settlement or sign an "end to the conflict".

@@kobo132 I thought that was the case, I could not understand why he abruptly left the negotiations, now I know. The Palestinian side has resolutely refused any kind of compromise since 1947 and now it looks like they will end up with nothing.

The problem is 'from the river to the sea', that is why there can be no solution. Islamic apartheid is the obstacle.

N O end of story. A true Palestinian will never accept a one state solution as they shouldn't.

2 state + global geo interests + religious mistrust and fomented hate = conflict guaranteed, one state social integration and sharing why is it absurd?
