I have been in contact with several university Middle East experts who basically agree that Netanyahu here is playing very hard with a wild card to get the U.S. and Israel to stragically knock out Iran as the areas super power. This would entail a rapid strike on the first "notice" of an Iranian military move that would not cost the U.S or Israel too much in military. For several years there has been language encouraging the dehumanization of Iranians, particularly the theocracy. Professor Khalidi, you mentioned British imperialism, but after WWII, the U.S. took over the world power mantle, and in the late 40s, did we or did we not send our intelligence offers to perform some kind of covert operations in Palestine that basically helped to set up for the successful invasion and overthrow of Palestine in 1948?

Professor Ilan Pappé's "the ethnic cleansing of palestine" is a good read that talks about many things. I have yet to finish the book, but it addresses quite a bit of information about how this all started and what the Zionists did before ane after 1948. He is also an Israeli Jewish historian, btw.

... IF Israel's own reports of the IDF's killing of the three hostages is accurate, it was NOT an accident. It might have been inexperienced soldiers in a panicked state, but THAT is STILL not precisely an accident ... the hostages were shirtless and, as such, hardly likely hiding a large explosive (if we assume that they were actually Hamas operatives) ... the soldiers COULD have told them to strip completely and approach one at a time with their hands on their heads.
