When I went to Israel, I was there the first time for five weeks. After I came home, one of my teachers told me they heard a slight Israeli accent. I could hear it in myself; certain vowel sounds were hard to unlearn.

That's definitely helpful. I worked on some things I noticed, like pronouncing every consonant, even at the ends and middles of words, where in American English we tend not to. And I knew there should be pure consonants and not diphthongs, but now I see how important that is for a good sound, not to let the diphthongs sneak in. English hardly ever uses a pure vowel sound, it's all diphthongs, so it takes some practice!
@UlpaNoyaNoyaEinhorn
@UlpaNoyaNoyaEinhorn 3 ай бұрын
@@coyotech55 Hey coyotech55! It's great that you're making sure to pronounce every consonant! This is already an important step towards an authentic Israeli accent. I just want to clarify something regarding vowels. English actually does use pure vowels quite a lot. (Examples of pure vowels in English words: cup, father, shoot, soft, bed, cat...). It has more pure vowels than diphthongs, but compared to Hebrew, its use of diphthongs is much more extensive. The thing is (and I understand why this might be confusing) that in the language I developed to explain to my students how to pronounce Hebrew sounds, I use the word "pure" in a broader sense than its definition in professional linguistics. In the latter, pure means: Not a diphthong. But when I talk about the purity of a sound in Hebrew, I don't only mean that it’s not a diphthong, but that it's a very defined and distinct sound. Clean and simple. Unlike pure sounds in English, which can sound like a combination of two vowels, even if they are not diphthongs. For example, in the word cat, it sounds like a combination of e and a; something that would never happen in Hebrew. Or for instance, in the name: McDonald's, the vowel in the syllable "Do" sounds like a combination of a pure o and an a, which gives us a sound similar to "daw." In Hebrew/Israel, we pronounce it only with a pure o. (Like in the word "טוב" (tov) - "good", in Hebrew), and it's not that the vowel in McDonald's in English is a diphthong, but in my teaching language, it's also not pure, but a combination of two basic vowel sounds that together create a more complex vowel sound. A sound that does not exist in Hebrew. I hope this helps :) Keep up the good work you're doing!

To pronounce anything in Hebrew I have found it's easier to turn my tongue sideways inside and then it might sound right. It's a complete mouth twist and rs sound like yo yo instead of rodik r.
@UlpaNoyaNoyaEinhorn
@UlpaNoyaNoyaEinhorn Жыл бұрын
I can definitely understand why you'd hear the Resh as "yo yo", because Resh is almost a vowel. It's so subtle and brief. There's barely any friction or obstruction of air, and the air flows relatively freely between the articulators. I tell my accent students that Resh is something between a consonant and a vowel. It's so delicate that sometimes it's unnoticeable.

@emmanuelwood8702

First, you have to learn German because that is the origin of the Israeli accent . It is a Semitic language spoken with a European accent because that is were the founders of the country came from.
@UlpaNoyaNoyaEinhorn
@UlpaNoyaNoyaEinhorn 7 ай бұрын
@emmanuelwood8702 That is very incorrect and misleading. First of all, learning German will not help you with your Israeli accent since the German and the Israeli accents are vastly different. Furthermore, the very suggestion is odd; Why would anyone who's interested in improving their ISRAELI accent, learn German? Wouldn't it be more effective to learn Hebrew? You wrote that Hebrew is a Semitic language spoken with a European accent. What accent is that? French? German? Italian? Spanish? Greek? If you meant German, that is again- wrong. The Academy of the Hebrew Language, is the official and supreme institution in Israel, for the science of Hebrew. It was established at the end of the 19th century- beginning of the 20th century. Since its establishment and until this very day, this organization has been in charge of researching the Hebrew language, developing it, and regulating it as a living language. The decisions made by this institution bind all state institutions, including local authorities. It was founded and led by Eliezer Ben-Yehuda, who is known as the spiritual father of the revival of spoken Hebrew in Israel. Ben Yehuda, came to Israel from what is known today as Belarus. (Russian Empire). Not Germany. His peers, the other members of the Academy of the Hebrew language, along with its closest supporters were all from Eastern Europe. Countries such as: Russia, Poland, Lithuania, Ukraine, Latvia… but not Germany. Some were even born in Israel. Back when it was- part of the Ottoman Empire. Not Germany. And now for the most critical point: In its early stages, one of the decisions the academy had to make was: Which vowel system to use? In Ashkenazi pronunciation, there were seven vowels, while in Sephardic pronunciation, there were five. The academy decided to adopt the Sephardic pronunciation, and therefore, today in spoken Hebrew, there are five vowel sounds, as it was in the Sephardic pronunciation. This is the pronunciation of the immigrants from ARAB COUNTRIES, not the pronunciation of the Ashkenazim who came from Europe. This is the ONE subject this video is about: Vowel sounds. Even the video's thumbnail says: "Israeli Accent: It's all about the vowel sounds". You wanted Semitic? There you have it.

I have lived in Israel for nearly 50 years, and speak Hebrew quite well moslty learned out and about. Even without opening my mouth I get spoken to in English, it is really annoying!! I don't have a typically heavy American accent but still have traces of something. Sometimes people try to guess where I am from, on a few occasion asking, Holland?? It is pretty hard to drop an accent completely and there is nothing worse than a grating fake one!! Many famous high ranking people have one and it has no bearing on one's knowledge or command of the language. I speak more gramatically correctly then many native speakers! It is also a thing here to make fun of accents. While it can be funny I feel they mostly underestimate how hard it is to actually make aliyah and fit into the lifestyle and mentality which is so vastly different from the countries we came from and to master the language. Israelis who make yerida and leave have to suddenly learn a foreign language. They do so with varying rates of success.English is slightly better than decades ago but still not splken like the Europeans. While abroad they realize what it requires, they ALL retain their accents, too. Just sayin'...
