Issues with Hyperkin’s new Retron 3 HD

Hyperkin reached out after seeing this video claiming the issue must have been with my controller and not the console. Was the system not programmed to work with Hyperkins NES style controller? Or was the controller simply broken? Did you try using the Hyperkin NES controller on an actual NES? Or other clone systems that could play NES games? If so, did it work on those systems?

None of these issues have any relevance to my gaming needs. I never play Famicom games. I knew about the controllers issue and I knew this console did not include an NES controller. I am a strictly NES, SEGA, SNES Gamer. I may dabble a little with GameBoy and N64. But that's it. I never have even touched a Playstation, or an Xbox. I was an NES kid since February of 1987, my 5th birthday. Growing up, I had seen but never played any Atari or earlier consoles. So I've never been interested in those either.

You can play Nintendo out of the box!! It comes with an adapter so you can plug in the snes controller to the nes input

I can confirm this. I have 2 red Retron 3 HD's. One shipped in the box with the beveled edge and did not come with an adapter. The second came in a regular style box with the adapter. I am currently using the adapter with Hyperkin's BT Scout and Mike Tyson's Punchout, with no noticeable lag. **For the record, the BT Scout is nearly perfect, but is shite when it comes to PC emulation compatibility, having many headaches with few successes. Excellent for the SNES (and NES via adapter), but not great for PC.

That’s pretty weird indead, if they only just put 3 controllers in the box and or put a warning label on the box saying that each specefil controllers are sold saperately , that wouldn’t have become a deal braker.

Of course you need to go out and buy each individual controller for each port to be able to play the games for each separate system. Should be common sense. The system itself just provides all of those systems in 1 so you don’t have to have multiple systems hooked up.

There are many x in 1 clone consoles (RetroBit trio and even hyperkin’s own Retron 5) that allow you to use any port you want for any system.

@@mike7599 The likely explanation is that the 3 HD uses clone hardware (either ASIC or FPGA) while the 5 uses software emulation running in some ARM SoC, like what you will find on "smart" things like phones, tablets, TVs, speakers, home hubs, whatever. They may be superficially similar, but for some people that's a distinction that matters a lot. For those purists wanting a classic, no-delay, bug-compatible experiences, a clone is more desirable, for casual players or people who value practicality over accuracy, emulators are more desirable.

​@@mike7599 Oh, the flash cartridge issue may either be due to buggy clone hardware or the system having a software emulation / cart dumping combo. Game carts were never meant to be read all at once and never accessed again and flash carts and multi-game carts exploits the real hardware behavior to offer you some convenience, but will not work with cart dumping hardware/software combo. I'm not sure how common are those, but I know that they exist.

the Snes controller has a adapter to conect to nes, so you can still play nes out of the box

I think someone else needs to confirm this as well. Hyperkin reached out to me and are sending me another cadet to try. They claim it works. Im willing to give them a try but I’m confident it’s the system as it works on everything else I have (original nes, retrousb avs, RetronHD and even my mister setup with the blisster board). We shall see and I’ll post an update video

Hey Anthony thanks for stopping by! It’s an OK clone. Nothing to write home about. The NES color palette and music are horrible. Snes and sega are pretty good.

My Retron 2 HD had strong issues with Snes port, the games didn't boot, only later when inserted a couple of times, the palette on Nes games are not very nice as well (check The Legend of Zelda, the title screen speaks by itself ...) . I won't invest in Retron 3 HD, I just hope the N64 console that will be released later will be much better

Sorry to hear the snes didn’t work well for you. It seems to be pretty good on the HD3. However the NES palette is still awful, you are right on about Zelda! I’m also looking forward to the n64 system. Hopefully it works out well!

I've another issue. The colors ! In Rockman Mega World, when you finish as stage, the light should be off on the beaten stage so you can what you have do. On the Retron 3 HD, the light is not off. I can't explain why but it's maybe a color accuracy problem.

Hey Mike, did you tried to play master system games on it, using the Genesis Everdrive? Too bad you have to use the current plataform controller, thats dumb, makes no sense.

EGR! Thanks for checking out the video! I haven’t tried master system games with the everdrive but I believe madlittlepixel tested them in his review video. I think you have to change the region switch under the console to get it to work correctly!

Mine works with the cadet controller... what doesnt work is the colors... the pale yellow in mario 3 shows up as white. I have tried everything. Multiple hdmis... different tvs, only thing i havent tried is rca cables. My next attempt is probably rcas into an rca to hdmi adapter

The color palette is wrong on this clone console. Doesn’t matter what cable combination you use it will always be wrong.

Good points!! They should have just made it so it has USB ports instead so you can use lots of different controllers. Imagine playing Sonic the Hedgehog with a Snes controller!!! Lol

Hey Nate! The reason I was thrown off was because Retro Bit’s clone consoles (duo and trio) allow you to use any controller you want. It’s just so much easier to use just one controller instead of swapping them around.

I still use it all the time for testing purposes. It works great as long as you are OK with just decent quality. Sound is slightly off with NES games and there is some kind of smoothing effect built in you can’t turn off. But for the price you can’t beat it. However If your looking for perfection and can spare the extra money, look into fpga systems by analogue or retrousb!

For weird reason, when I stick an nes cartridge into its slot and turn it on, it just a mess. I guess a new console like this can’t handle simple 8 bit graphics. Hopefully I can fix this. If I can’t, then I don’t suggest buying hyperkin.

this is probably going to be a dumb question on my part, so i apologize in advance, but with the Retron 3 HD can you DL English Translation patches like you can with the Retron 5 ?

Nope. There is no SD card and no way to interface this with a computer. However you probably could play a rom translation off a flash cartridge!

My 3 month old Retron 3 HD consistently crashes every cartridge after about 30 minutes of play. I had about 20 hours into my recent Mario RPG playthrough and it recently froze up. I eventually got the game to come back on and 3 of 4 save files were deleted. That sucked a lot. Super Mario World crashes every time. Just punched out the first version of Bald Bull and got a crash. This barely ever happens with my original consoles. I'm really starting to believe the Retron 3 HD is a flaming piece of trash. I can deal with the colors looking off, but I can't deal with a system that won't play games and deletes save files. Damn shame because it seemed like a great package for the price. You should probably look elsewhere if you're in the market. Definitely don't use it for games with battery saves, it will perform fine until it crashes and deletes your hard work.

I bought mine and it doesn’t work at all. Genesis games just show a puke green screen. NES games and SNES games show a black screen

​@@joshuapittman4663 I had that problem as well with nearly 50 games. They only worked, or at least started, after I meticulously cleaned them with 90% rubbing alcohol and cotton swabs.

Worked on everything else perfectly- original nes, mister, retrohd, retrousb avs. Hyperkin contacted me and is sending a replacement controller. I will film an update video on this soon!

This console and company SUCKS! I have been through THREE (3), Retron 3 HD's, because the ALL have failed! Either no save file, or it erases immediately upon turning off and back on, the games would crash, or just not load at all! This company is going to get a lawsuit eventually!

It’s by no means perfect. Have you checked out the analogue systems? More money but way more reliable.
