I'm an ISTP. I get irritated when someone doesn't tell me exactly what they want or how they want something to be done. It's like they assume we know what they want. Do you guys get that?

My father was an ISTP. In the context of having a family - he was giving, generous and showed his love in actions rather than words. He was always improving the functioning and aesthetics of our family home and he was a fun father to have. He was always on the go and made us the center of his world, despite a highly demanding job that he detested yet performed exceedingly well in. He was highly intellectual and appeared to lack compassion at times only to take the person he upset out a week later. Quick temper but he always compensated in other ways.

I am I true ISTP and can tell you that most ISTP's are very sentimental and emotional, they just don't show it, we hide our emotions well, but they are very strong and most definitively do exist. I most definitely agree that it is almost like ISTP's have 2 personalities, which a lot of people just don't understand.

Hey ISTP? :) Wanna add me what you say is how think am too. My fb link is on top. As an ISTP feel like depression and human life gets the best of the logical what not to do behavior completely ignored and a search for a rational peice to find humanity in hell begins. :)

***** No because we do not make our decisions though emotions, but that does not mean that we don't have them. We are not drama queen's and don't like to let people know if something is bothering us. I just hate how people think of us as ruthless human beings that have no emotions and love war, because that is not true at all.

I hate when someone tells me a rule that doesn't make sense, and when I ask them, "Why?", instead of giving me the logic of the rule, they get offended like I'm challenging them. Just tell me the reasoning behind the rule, and as long as it makes sense, I'm a happy guy. Just answer the question. It's not that difficult. >.

This describes me so perfectly, it's almost scary. People think I'm quiet and introverted and when they actually get to know me, they realize that I need a lot of action in my life. We can be extroverted as well if we disagree with something or are really passionate about something. And we're definitely not cold-hearted. It may seem like it at first sight, but we're actually quite empathic.

I'm an ISTP female and I have the hardest time controlling my tears. I do tend to percieve it as a weakness, but I'm also not afraid to cry to every sad scene in a movie in front of other people. As long as I cry about something that's, honestly, insignificant, like movies, videos etc, I'm fine with it being in front of people. Then it makes me worry if like they think that I don't like texting them... But it's not them... When I'm like truly in the zone and mood we have the most funniest convos about topics but if I am not in the mood then I just want my friend to not text me ever... Sometimes it feels like I'm being a bad friend. Cause she texts me but I don't and it seems like I text her only when I want to. and like I'm not being there for her.

@sweetgirl070707

It's not that hard if they're not needy and have other friends. The occasional text like "Merry Christmas" and "Happy birthday" seem to suffice, and for deeper connection you hang out now and then. Those are the base friends, then you can make friends with your colleagues too by showing bare minimum of attention and let them talk about their life. These are temporary, disposable friendships, but are necessary to keep your social skills well oiled.

I'm an ISTP female, and to me, I can really agree with the double personality. I act really shy and calm outdoors or with people that I don't know well, but when I'm with people I know, I act differently. I tend to be really extroverted around my close friends. Another thing about my personality is that I tend to hold in my thoughts, and I never enjoyed being a leader in groups. Even if I disagree with something, I would go with it instead of saying that I don't agree with it. I hate having to take the leadership roles, because to me, if I chose to take a leader role, I would try 100% to do my best. But people just don't give clear enough instructions and it really makes me scared and annoyed to take leadership roles. I don't know, it might just be people not being supportive enough?

As an ISTP, One of the strongest desires I personally have, is to be in a group that functions well together and doesn't argue about stupid crap. One that understands eachother with their strengths and weaknesses so that we can cover for them. No backstabbing either, if you have a problem with someone talk to THEM about it and work it out without them denying the issue's existence, and being willing to change. I might be able to make this clearer in the future, idk. TLDR: I want a safe place, that works well together, in order to better ourselves as a group.

I’m an ENFP. One of best friends is an ISTP. My takes on the type: He’s extremely mechanically inclined. He’s never had any formal training or college, yet he’s a project manager making 6 figures and driving company F150 around. Extremely dependable, especially in a crisis. I swear, it’s like the dude gets energized when there’s a problem. There’s not a guy I would call before him if I was in a jam (and I’ve been there many times), because he’s not only very competent, but he just so enthusiastically attacks any problem. We bond most on our shared appetite for adventure and risk-taking, though my riskiness is directed more towards people/social situations: “Let’s approach those hot girls! Let’s go to this party! Etc.” His riskiness is more about doing physical things: kite surfing, riding up mountains on our motorcycles, etc. We clash sometimes when having discussions. He’s not interested in the “humanities” subjects like history, literature, the arts, so if the conversation veers towards those topics, he gets extremely disinterested, usually tries to summarize the discussion in a very simple way, and move on. Generally, he’s just not as interested in exploring and entertaining new ideas and theories, and that can be stifling to us ENFP’s. Overall, I love the type, and I have mad respect for their competence and reliability. Cheers 🥂

In fiction ISTPs-would be protrayed as survivalist or mercenary archetypes because of their display of resourcefulness and the use of equipment whether it's a weapon or a machine, since they are the jack of all trades, however in a worst case scenario expect them to be crazy-prepared and having a back up plan in a post-apocalyptic world as their playground, while the other personality types would end up lost or dead.

Male ISTP's like to train at and master a skill. Usually something physical. We enjoy competition as a way to measure our value. We use our intuition to see what no one else seems to see. We both have a very strong sense of "feeling" as well as a cold blooded expressionless demeanor. We always seek truth and accept it even if it went against our perception. We tend to be difficult to talk to. We take massive risk and usually fearless. This can get us into trouble or lead us to great success.

My boyfriend is an ISTP and I’m an ENFP- sooo, opposites attract?? The thing he said from the very moment he met me was his fascination in my passion. How expressive and ideal driven I am. Now that we’ve been together for 2 years, it’s starting to drive him nuts how I’m “all ideas” driven, but not “results” driven. People like me, people fear him. They do not understand us as a couple but it works. He takes care of all the things I hate doing and will procrastinate until I forget about it completely. But conversations can be hard because he thinks I’m missing the point of something when I NEVER DO, it’s just I have a different perspective. It’s definitely a compromise that requires work and understanding. But it’s worth it because it’s a balance.

ISTP female here. For almost entire of my life, people have been telling me that I should be taking literature or language linguistics that kind of stuff, and I thought I like them too (since all my commitments are geared towards that as well). Luckily, right before going university, I figured out that I liked them mainly because I like learning about random facts, and I am actually bad at figuring out all those fluffy concepts and theories. I would have probably died in university when handling that kind of academic rigour in literature or linguistics. I'm kinda happy in computer engineering now, even though I still enjoy reading literature and doing arts in my leisure time. Tbh when I first did the MBTI test in high school, I doubted my results so much because "I'm a humanities student, how can I be this engineer character?" But well, since university starts I increasingly think that this result describes me freaking accurately, which is not in terms of my interests, but how I learn and do things

I'm an ISTP although I can't relate to being spatially aware. I am both female (estrogen exposure during puberty naturally impairs spatial awareness) and dyspraxic, so that could have something to do with it. I am however very logical, and I am very good at solving real world problems. An answer that everyone else fails to grasp is often completely obvious to me. I am very instinctive about people and their motives and I am extremely streetsmart. I can often smooth talk myself out of almost any situation, although I hate doing it and I would just prefer to be honest. I know exactly what particular people want to hear. Sometimes I go against what people want to hear because it's just fun to see their reaction, or I feel that someone needs to finally stand up to them. I don't get along with SJ types well at all. I used to think I was an INTJ, but I hate controlling other people, I think personal liberty and freedom are of absolute importance, I am far too non judgemental and I don't really have too many personal morals. I am completely non sentimental, apart from when it comes to babies and children, but then I put that down to maternal instinct more than anything. Funnily enough I chose to become a housewife which might seem like an odd choice for an ISTP. My parenting style is very free. I don't like imposing rules on children unless it protects them from absolute danger.

I'm very action oriented and focused on the bottom line, big picture. I'm not idealistic, and find myself explaining to people why certain things "wont" work. However when I'm at home or with friends, I'm good at just going with the flow, relating, and being agreeable when I want a harmonious environment. In either situation, I strongly value my indepence, am fiercely loyal to close friends, and dont like imposing my values and ideas on others.

However, I could imagine the ISTP could get impatient or bothered by the tons of theories the ENTP produces, but never really tests in reality....ENTP's tend to be mostly talk, not much action. If they're about action, it's often to a degree an experiment for them. However, the ISTP just prefers to do what's logical without experimentation.

INTJ here, raised my an ISTP mother, and I've taken quite a lot of these traits from her. While I do enjoy erudite discussions on theory and philosophy and all banter, there's no better approach in life than the ISTP's no-nonsense, in your face pragmatism. Wish I could've been one myself. The SPs are functionally the best group, in my opinion.

TLDR: love adventure, hate rules. This is me to a T. I was a paratrooper in the army, but could only hang one enlistment because I hate rules. Was a cop, but couldn’t hang because I hated following police rules and didn’t like enforcing laws I didn’t agree with. Only laws I cared to enforce were the ones related to “don’t interfere with someone else’s life” (violent/property crime).

Gosh the fire thumbnail really accurate tho. I was the one putting off the fire at my friend's kitchen. They were screaming and there was a big fire like 1 meter high with gas leaking too. I unconsciously grabbed several towels and dip them in the water to set the fire off. It was scary and I'm glad everyone was safe 😢

Pretty sure my grandpa was ISTP. He was a mountain climber and his job was mainly getting into all sorts of places to get hard to reach stuff for geologists to study. Spent his free time tinkering, doing graphic design and calligraphy (by hand!), taking photographs which he'd process himself in an improvised darkroom in the bathroom and with all kinds of sports. Huge prankster too. I'm INTJ but have inherited quite a lot from him 💜

Stinknus, most people who fail to test as their real type in mbti typology more have a problem with actually knowing themselves, and thus not giving objective realistic answers that match with their own personality, rather than the test being faulty.

I am an infj and have been in a relationship with an istp for several years (but probably not for much longer). As other infj commenters have said, it isn't easy and we often just don't get each other, though we are both very independent in our thinking and lifestyles. The istp that I know is a indeed intelligent, otherwise I wouldnt bother with him as shallow, vacuous, flakey people make me want to head for the hills. The istp in my life has good recall of facts and reads widely, but has limited people skills and often dreads social events because he fears he will say something stupid. (Yeah, his fears are definitely well founded. ) Also, there are different kinds of intelligences. An istp is not likely to have linguistic, interpersonal (social) or intrapersonal (self awareness) intelligence, or for that matter, social intelligence. In the case of my friend, his strength is in music and understanding the natural/physical world. He seems to have his senses tuned to it, like some kind of internal radar. Seeing this in action is a marvel. He has great spacial awareness, can figure out what almost any random, unidentifiable (to me) tool is for. On the flip side, he can be incredibly insensitive, crass, stubborn and boorish (and is of course too stubborn to believe me when I call him out on these behaviours). He has no awareness of when he is being taken advantage of or manipulated, and will stubbornly refute me if I try to warn him, even though I have great intuition (my own kind of radar) about people and their motives and am almost always spot on, so it is frustrating to not be valued for this. One thing truly missing is expression of genuine empathy, or willingness/ability to apologize, and that is a huge deficit imo, a potential relationship killer. Istp people, you do do live amongst other humans, whether you like it or not, and though you so value and trust the wheels of logic grinding in your (at times hard) head, remember that logic has been described as a systematic process of arriving at the wrong conclusion. (I acknowledge that if you are an istp you probably think there are too many words here. But, tough luck. )

I agree with the dual personality label, sometimes I plan parties and go out for risky activities, but I also like to be alone and have my peace and quiet. It seems like my senses are turned up to 11, so I have to ignore the world to make a logical thorough decision. I think my superpower is staying calm and focused during emergencies where most people freak out. I also hate illogical rules and behaviors.

Anything that can not be easily seen, is really easily dismissed as untrue. There is not always that much investigation that goes into researching such things. If it can't be observed directly > it's not true.....it's a little bit short sighted

@@PowerRedBullTypology if you're talking about istps I'd say that's wrong. Istps are really observant and don't make decisions blindly, they just keep the observations to themselves, which makes it seem that way to others.

As an ISTP, i tend to question people's mind, starting as raw as :"Why would someone ever love eating Kimchi? Are they just forcing themselves or keep telling themselves that they love korean culture, hence making themselves love eating the food, or show the world that they do, and be sorta proud of it? Is that one of the ways that they find their identity?" These thoughts were emerged after tasting how BAD kimchi is to me. I believe as an ISTP too, i will sometimes seek for confirmation in order to fit the people around me. Sometimes it would just seem weird to some people when i do. Hence I am trying to seize this chance and ask fellow ISTP's, do you experience similar things with what i did? guess its kinda savage after reading u guys' comments. lol I will appreciate your replies.

Confirmation. YES. that is highly true. I tend to want confirmation from others but the thing is if it's something I truly want then I won't care about others. I think like confirmation part is Turbulent or affirmative part at the end. And I'm ISTP-T. So I seek for confirmation. I honestly tried kimchi. It was truly different from the food in my country. Never tasted something like that but I think I was neutral about it. But since I like korean culture I think if anyone ever to ask me how it was... I would say that it was good. I didn't really dislike it or like it. I suppose. I liked the fact that it was different from my normal food. It was pretty okay but not like love st first sight kinda food.

I love ISTPs and I admire them so much for a lot of the things they do, like how they seemingly don't care about what other people think/feel about them. I'm constantly thinking about what other people think/feel about me, I always try to be considerate of other people. Speaking of being worried about what other people think of me, I am worried about being annoying to ISTP so I think it's better if I just admire from afar haha - ENFJ

I'm an INTP but I think my dad is an ISTP. He is great but when I was a kid he always pushed me to play hockey, go skiing, swimming in rivers and at the sea. It was stressful to me but now I love playing hockey too! And for some reason i am very athletic (not muscular but very fast, with a lot of phisical stamina and agility) wich is not common on INTPs. I think this might be because INTPs usually don't learn to like sport since they like being inside their minds. Being pushed to do very different sports since I was a child was exactly what I needed to not end up being just a nerd.
