Fortuner vs MU-X: which 4WD is best? Both of these vehicles are designed to tow heavy loads, go off-road and fit the whole family in. Both the Isuzu MU-X and Toyota Fortuner are based on utes, though they are a fair bit more refined than their pick-up siblings. Neither is as expensive as the new Ford Everest, but the Mitsubishi Pajero Sport is even cheaper than this pair.
So, if you’re looking for a rugged 4WD wagon with seven seats and at least 3000kg towing capacity, should you buy the Toyota Fortner, the Isuzu D-Max, or something else entirely? Let’s explore.

The Fortuner is probably one of the best, if not the best, best value 4x4s any carmaker makes, let alone Toyota. I live in Karratha WA - Toyota and Toyota Hilux Country, where anything other than a Toyota falls apart. FYI. the Fortuner is an upgraded Hilux with a body kit - i.e., all its mechanicals are Toyota Hilux - Australia's best-selling car for years - upgraded with rear discs and rear springs (i.e., the Hilux comes with drums and leaf-springs). I've had my Fortuner for 3 years and 55 000 kms, and it is still as solid as new despite me taking it to some of the toughest offroad conditions in the country. When I bought the Fortuner it replaced an 80 Series Land Cruiser (still one of the best-regarded 4x4s ever made) and a Nissan Dualis, and it does the jobs of both cars better than either of those cars! Eg, the traction control system and factory rear locker means that I have taken the Fortuner to places that even the 80 Series would have struggled to go and to places where most Fortuner owners can only dream of driving. Eg, there is a track up telegraph hill just outside Karratha which is ~45 degrees and full of loose rocks, gravel and holes, and the Fortuner made it up no trouble at all with no wheel spin at all. The track to Gregory's Gorge is like a Sunday family drive for the family in the Fortuner despite being 30+km long rough track and its 2 water crossings - one always deep and the other always rocky. The Fortuner has been incredibly tough - as tough as the 80 Series. I have also driven it at 180km/h on a gravel road with complete stability and traction, 150km/h for 2 hours on a highway to get home before sunset, and it handles sand like a beast - the best sand driver I have ever driven including 80 series and a 2012 Hilux. I.e., it handles sand amazing well with all traction control systems off - i.e., as a raw basic 4x4. I have also done ~2000 km road trips with my kids with the Fortuner packed to the gills and the kids in the rear seats, and the Fortuner did the trip with ease and in comfort even after 20+ hours driving. And it is perfect for the school run and putting around town too. It also only cost me ~$50 000, which is amazing value for Toyota that can do anything and go virtually anywhere. I could take the Fortuner anywhere that a 300 Series owner would take their car - more places, because a 300 Series owner wouldn't take their $100 000+ car half the places I will take the Fortuner because I'm not worried about damaging a very expensive vehicle. I have also made no mechanical changes to the Fortuner because it comes out of the factory good enough for me to take it anywhere. I've improved the all-terrains and I’ve put on 32-inch all-terrains, but a suspension lift would be pointless because it goes everywhere I need to go with the factory suspension. And the factory suspension is solid around town, but also good for rough tracks too. And I bought it using Toyota's Access finance with a 6% interest rate and which gives multiple choices to refinance or sell it. The Fortuner is severely underrated because most reviewers ignore it and/or do not even try to push it anywhere to its full capabilities. I suggest reviewers actually try to push the Fortuner to its limits to discover its limits - they probably will not find it before their fear or their insurance makes them back off. My suggestion - GET A FORTUNER WHILE YOU CAN! When I bought my 2021 Fortuner they were rare around Karratha, but they are now everywhere as the locals are finally waking up to how good and capable they are.

I think a comparison by top specs and not price would also be welcomed. I struggle to see practicality in your soccer balls test really. I noticed space in which you did not load balls in the Isuzu. If this was about price then Pajero Sport Exceed should have been here as well.

This always boils down to personal choice and we actually set out to order the Pajero Sport. We compared Pajero Sport GLX, MU-X LSM and Fortuna GX, not the Everest due to reliability longer term and the extra expense of the upcoming model (current Ford owners). As for price, we were looking at base models to build a touring rig to our needs and we live in country town. The MU-X was quoted at 61K whereas the Fortuna was 55k and Pajero 55k. I had a workmate who with the previous gen MU-X had gearbox issues and had trouble getting repaired under warranty, eventually the gearbox was replaced as well as a persistent rear engine seal leak. Our purchase price factored in aftermarket gear as well, so the extra 5k is a lot of gear compared to the MU-X. At the end of the day and when taking into account what we use it for, touring, off-roading (hard stuff), towing, servicing and reliability as well as aftermarket addon's the Fortuna best suited us. The more we drove it the more at home we felt. In overseas markets they far more popular than here. Comparing these three it's the best off-road as it's traction control is far better and can be tipped nose down into a deep rut without falling into it cocking a rear up scarily high unlike the Pajero Sport which also has a smaller 68ltr tank with a distinct lack of grunt and no rear difflock. Point these three at a steep shale rutted ascent and watch. Where the others stop the Fortuna clambers up. Witnessed first hand in the Flinders Ranges. That extra power and torque makes it cruise more easily towing too. The rear seats will be removed with fridge and drawers to be installed as well as aftermarket suspension lift and AT tyres, like most do anyway, in addition to bar, lights, etc. As with every order regardless of make we have a long wait for delivery.

If you expect something you'll be looking 2nd hand only. We ordered 21June and were told to expect delivery up to 12 months. Researching a little I found reports of 8 -12 months for Fortuna's, but with growing supply chain issues it could be anyone's guess.

There is a big problem with your review! The Isuzu MU-X you have shown here is the 2021 Model. I own the 2022 model and much of the grievances you have with the reviewed Isuzu have been rectified in the newer model such as the button on the wheel to disable lane keep assist etc. and also the silly plastic in the glove box that takes up space (maybe some other things too). I know you rated the Isuzu as being the better car overall but you have massively short chaged the 2022 model given how much emphasis you put on the things you didn't like that don't actually exist in the 2022 model.

No idea why you’d buy either of these if you didn’t want to go offroad though - way better options around

Odd. Very odd. 🤔 In South Africa (and here in Namibia) the Fortuner is by far the preferred option. I am on my 3rd one. Before COVID hit it was around the top five vehicle bought of ALL vehicles. As an all rounder, nothing beats its reliability, practicality, dealer network (with better service than the Isuzu dealers), etc., etc… Yes it is not he most comfortable on road (get a Tiguan, etc.) or off-road (get a Prado, etc.) but nothing beats it for all round ability and price. BTW, my 2019 Fortuner had all the things you referred to in the rear, i.e. additional plug I the rear and additional parcel hangers.

Test drove a new Fortuner, didn't feel that different to our 06 Hilux with 250K! However the deal breaker for me was the driving position which was more upright and truck like than the MUX. For long drives this is much less comfortable for me as you can't stretch your legs like in the MUX. The other neg on the Fortuner was how the 2nd row seats still take up cabin space when folded as they don't go flat and the floor has a huge hump in it. Not ideal for a camping setup you may want to sleep in occasionally. I'd look at removing at least one of the 2nd row seats as well as the 3rd row. Both are great vehicles I reckon for exploring our country in the end you prioritise the minor differences to your individual needs and wants.

Highest sold ute based suv in South Africa. Also, the most stolen and hijacked…a risk I am not prepared to take with my kids in the car. The Isuzu is very overpriced here and the dealerships pathetic. The incoming 3.0 v6 Everest looks promising…but, not sure of Ford reliability. Then there is the incoming Mahindra Scorpio N Z8L diesel automatic 4xplor which should come in at a price point much lower than these other D class suvs. After sales may be crap but at least i would not have paid so much for it! Postea: just bought the MU-X. Got a good deal. Drives better than Fortuner and the old Everest. New Everest is prado price range… and well, its FORD.

The mux will use the same boron alloy roof structure intersection sections like the new Dmax this is 106 percent increase in roof structure over the current Hilux design/fortuner, this design is developed by Volvo in roll over tests all will have 5stars, but roll over tests aren’t considered in these tests. Coming from a VF2 Sportwagon and needing a better tow vehicle spent 2 months driving Fortuner, MUX and Pajero Sport. Toyota first off the list. On bumpy roads felt like a ute, 10k services a joke. Loved the Mux interior and the way it felt on the road. Eventually bought a Pajero Sport GSR. Feels slightly smaller inside, pretty good interior, slightly soft suspension wise but 90% of our driving is city. Three biggest things 64k drive away with extras. You forgot to mention the Panoramic View Monitor on the Toyota Fortuner Limited including the SOS button (Australian spec). I can see why Isuzu MU-X is a better option in Australia even in the top specification LS-T model. (Special Drive Away Price plus Capped Price Service Offer). For Melbourne, Special Drive Away price is capped at $65,990. (Otherwise it’s $67,400 + on road charge of $6,373). Toyota Fortuner Limited (Melbourne) Drive Away price is $68,455. In New Zealand, Toyota claims a ground clearance of 279mm for the Fortuner. The only feature missing is the SOS button in the limited variant. The rest of the features remains the same. Total Drive Away $62,790 plus Govt. Clean Car fee of $2,587.50. Isuzu MU-X is priced at Recommended Retail Price $80,990 (On road charges are extra) plus Govt. Clean Car fee of $3,795. NZ website for Isuzu MU-X doesn’t mention any variant but what is shown and mentioned on the website is probably equivalent to the top spec LS-T. Also the website doesn’t mention any capped price servicing cost unlike the AU counter part. NZ website for Toyota Fortuner mentions a capped servicing at every 15,000 kms or first four years at $365.00 unlike the AU counterpart which is at every 10,000 kilometres or 6 months. With the Fortuner you get one service prior to delivery so technically it’s servicing every 15,000 kms or four years then on. I can see why you like the Isuzu MU-X better than the Toyota Fortuner even in the LS-U variant (Drive quality, Space, Service Cost, Overall Package). However, coming back to NZ, Toyota has a better resale value, plus the cost mentioned above is way different from that of AU. Toyota Fortuner Limited Total Drive Away Cost Price compared to the Isuzu MU-X is less. I came from a Nissan X-Trail ST 2WD model. So for me the ride quality is not any different in city conditions. But again the drive quality is my own opinion based on my prior limited experience. I can see where your expert opinion comes from and I don’t deny it but the price tag in NZ is good enough for me plus the brand. I had two Kia brand cars before and saw how resale was treated by Kia NZ dealers itself (let alone other dealers of different car brands) at the time of upgrading or reselling. That’s one reason I wanted to do go with a brand with better overall resale value. Time will tell me if the Toyota Fortuner is as reliable as the Toyota Hilux. Another reason to choose a Toyota Fortuner (NZ) is that it’s a Part Time 4WD for the price tag. If I had to pay big bucks as stated for the (NZ) Isuzu MU-X (again Part Time 4WD) then I would rather pay that money for a Toyota Prado VX which is a Full Time 4WD. I did consider a Mitsubishi Pajero Sport but again price tag, resale value and smaller fuel tank, took it off my list.

I was going to post the same thing. The MUX in New Zealand is an $80k car - same price as a Prado VX or interestingly the new V6 Everest Sport. The Fortuner is $62k. Is the MUX LST worth $20k more even with the superior driving dynamics? I’d say no.

@@mrme982007 When I booked the Toyota Fortuner Limited in July 2021 and received it at the end of Jan 2022, it was priced at a Total Drive Away Price of $61,290.00 (no Govt. Clean Car Fee) while the Isuzu MU-X was still at $80,990 (Plus On Road Charges). Plus at the time of booking I did not have to pay for any deposit and I could cancel on the deal anytime without having to pay any fees to Toyota NZ or the Toyota Dealership. In fact when the car came to NZ I was asked one final time if I still wanted the car or not and again it would cost me anything to cancel on the deal at that moment. In fact I got my car earlier as another customer backed out of the order at the last moment. Toyota NZ gave us a $50.00 gift voucher over during Christmas due to delays and the long wait.

All these ute based SUVs feel like cheap peices of crap, unless you have a specific need to buy one, don't. The Fortuner especially seems underdone in every area, I mean even the Hilux its based on isn't that great. Will be interesting to see if the new Everest will step up the game. Still most people if they really think about it, will be better off in a unibody SUV and admit they will never take it off road.

I am new to your channel so not familiar with whether you have any interest in off-road issues which to be fair is important to me having beaten up my Subaru forester taking it everywhere and looking to upgrade......How can you do a comparison between these vehicles without including a rigorous assessment of their 4wd off-road capabilities? This seems to be the same test you would expect for a sedan comparison. Ride quality is clearly going to be compromised to some extent by off road capability. Potential buyers of these vehicles are probably going to want to know which vehicle you are less likely to get stuck or bogged in??
