On the move Jack, I'm pretty sure that the preparation for paint and the paint application has not been done real well. The large section inside the engine bay that's peeling is only "tip of the iceberg" stuff. Paint applied in way too heavy coats, this is probably the same reason for the wheel arch surface cracks shown in your first video. Big project, I hope it doesn't break the bank.

I love Panteras. The best place for 351 Clevo parts, mods etc is Australia, the Falcon GT and GTHO came with them. Oiling issues were the big problems racers ran into. There are lots of GT/GTHO shops that offer parts in Aussie to check out.

Great project. If the gearbox needs attention Hardy Engineering in Leatherhead used to look after the ZF 5DS 25/2, which as you probably know is what yours is, that I raced in an Chevvy engined Ultima some years ago. Also may I suggest that you do not run the car with chrome plated suspension springs, a very American thing, as they can snap because of hydrogen embrittlement.

Be careful with the 1/4 windows; they are very expensive. Also, take care of that trunk insert, as they are in rare supply in that good of condition. Wilkinson Pantera, Pantera parts connection, PI Motorsports, and Hall Pantera should have most of what you need. Also, should you need deck lid lifts. SACHS SG314005 is the part number for some, which last spring were about 10 dollars compared to the 200 dollars most places charge. My dad has a 73 we just finished refreshing the trim and body panels and painted them in Bullitt Dark Highland Green. Good luck to you.

Please be careful of that clutch. Maybe the friction plate wasn't well aligned but you should never need to use the bolts to pull up the gearbox or tighten one side when the other is still 1/2" or more away as at 3:48 onwards. Use a trolley jack to support the gearbox and if it doesn't slide nicely on, check the clutch plate is centralised and the bush or roller bearing between the crank and input shaft is right size and correctly installed - forcing the gearbox on when misaligned will damage it!!

I am old enough to remember riding my bicycle past a Lincoln/Mercury dealer about 1972 and seeing a brand new Pantera sitting on the showroom floor amongst the chrome-laden big Lincolns and huge Mercury sedans. The Pantera looked so out of place next to those other cars. But those Lincoln/Mercury dealers must have been so happy to have some that exotic to sell (and to generate showroom traffic too!). Too bad the experiment didn’t last longer.

It is quite easy to look at a project and think it is nearly done but when you dig deeper you find things missing. That is not a reflection on the late previous owner (Jim) it is just how we all tend to do projects, put together what we have and then source the rest of the parts which is exactly what you are doing Jack. As for the paint work I have been thinking more about it and I came to the same conclusion as you. Although I am not an expert I did spend a short time working in a body shop when I was younger. It wouldn't be right to speculate as to the quality current finish but you are always at the mercy of the paint shop. Do remember that you know of a very good paint shop here in the UK so there should be no worries there. Thanks to Chuck and Mike for all there help and to you Jack for filming as much as you could. 👍👍
