Never knew about diodes in series. How come it needs such a high voltage? Is that something to do with the display?

I was thinking the same, anything close to 140v would be very high especially if it's running off battery. It would be intresting to know the actual voltage.

It’s for the display (the VFD) it is pretty high voltage apparently.
