To explain why the mother didn't notice her kid leaving her side (and also to explain why the people drove past new kid getting cut up in the first movie and why girl kids dad didn't notice the room covered in blood) its explained in the book (and maybe very quickly in the movie) that IT has the power to control what adults in Derry see, except for the main characters as adults for some reason. Yeah, the book wasn't great.

It affects them likely because they experienced it as it draws on emotion before giving themselves a scar. If you remember most of the character's lives go on similar to before they encountered Pennywise but that came with them forgetting. They were traumatized as kids by the clown providing a way into IT's own illusionary powers but the only one to stay doesn't know the answer. Explanation was in part that it had to do with Pennywise's psychic illusions over Derry only applying to that town with the exception being the group with loser scars. Taking a moment to more permanently establish a way to remember what they might forget in order to guarantee victory later. As adults they feared the being of Pennywise more than the concept once the memories came back. Meaning the movie might've been shorter if they fought him while remembering he's weak. New kids didn't really seem to fear IT as much in the film making it almost seem like the main cast's fear is just enough to satisfy the requirement IT just needs bodies.

"Here's someone who can PROTECT me from abuse!" they'll say. And when their 'hero' turns out to be abusive - sadly, there are far more abusers in the world than there are actual heroes - the victim will immediately kick in with all their habits. They'll tell themselves that they 'deserve' abuse, or that everyone is abusive so they can't do better (in their experience, this might actually be true). So the victim not only attracts the abuser but keeps them because they're so damaged. It's sadly common and understandable. If anyone out there is a victim of abuse, I strongly recommend some deep inner awareness and some counseling. Having someone you can talk to like a counselor can provide a check on your sometimes flawed thinking. They'll tell you that you DON'T have to put up with things and there ARE better people out there. They can often spot warning signs that you'll ignore. Be your best you! You deserve it!

@@fryloc359 Especially considering that splitting the adult and child parts of the book into seperate movies is a terrible idea cos a lot of the tension from the early adult parts was them not remembering how they defeated Pennywise the first time. They don't remember how they defeated him the first time until right near the end of the book, but in this movie we've already seen how they did it the first time and know everything from when they were kids already, which lessens the impact of the second movie.
