Subaru is cancelling one of its longest-running nameplates, the #subarulegacy #sedan
This leaves more room for the #accord #camry #k5 #altima #sonata to fight over the dwindling sedan market.

Consumers arent buying sedans is bullshit. Whenever a sedan is available at a decent price point they sell. The Elantra, Civic, Mazda 3 all sell well. What drives the sentiment people dont want sedans are OEMs selling them at the price of an suv and thus consuners opt for the better value which is an suv. But when a sedan is priced well, they sell.

@DeadAir21 28 күн бұрын
Here’s the problem with sedans. They have to sell in high volume for it to be worth it for them. I’m talking 100k units volume. While compacts sedans hit that mark with the exception of the Mazda3 and Impreza, mid size sedans are becoming a harder sell as compact crossovers are comparable in price. So you end up with Camry and Accord dominating the maket selling over 500k units combined. Altima and Malibu sell about 100k each but they sell most of theirs to fleets. K5 & Sonata have been on the decline for years selling about 55k a year each and the Legacy only selling 20k.

I recently bought a 24 Legacy Sport. I adore it. I've had hatches, vans, SUV's, etc for my last handful of cars, and I just kept not using the space more than once a year or every other year and missing out on the lower center of gravity and an affordable turbo that pulls like a freight train. If we want sedans to make a return, we need to close the emissions loophole that crossovers take advantage of that really are reserved for large vehicles (BOF trucks and SUVs). Although for an CAFE liability like Subaru it might do more harm than good, since they have nothing in their lineup they can even get up to 40mpg.
@DeadAir21
@DeadAir21 28 күн бұрын
Then maybe Subaru should have hit the standard then. Toyota and Honda have no problem doing it and they sell sedans all day long. The reality is the Subaru Legacy was a mediocre sedan. The CAFE standard wasn’t the reason it’s being discontinued. It’s because no one goes to Subaru for a sedan. Even the smaller Impreza has some of the worst fuel economy in the segment as you said yourself can’t hit 40 mpg.

I never thought that the Legacy would not outlast the Chevy Malibu. The Malibu is still being built with no design changes since 2016 except for dropping some trim levels. GM has done less to keep the Malibu around than Subaru, but I guess it is outselling it still after all these years which is amazing to me as they sold over 130,000 of those cars in 2023 while Subaru is only selling 25,000 of the Legacys.

I used to be a die-hard sedan fan(I actually drive a Subaru Ascent now), but technology and improvements just make crossovers a much better jack of all trades, especially if you only have one car. The Outback is literally a Legacy Wagon with cladding and a lift. There is it reason why it sells so well versus the Legacy. Ground clearance alone is worth it. Worrying about scraping on curbs, ruts, or shitty driveways is simply a non-issue for me.

Subaru isn’t listening to the North American consumer. By the time I was able to afford a WRX and the STI, they stopped producing the hatchback. The legacy was cool unless you realized you could get so much more utility with a hatchback. All manufacturers were pushing crossovers and hatchbacks… That’s crazy. The coolest most exciting cars on the road. In the 2000s were the wrx and sti cars with 4 wheel drive. A cool understated commuter car with guts. They were riding high off the notoriety of their racing and then they broke our hearts by sticking to only sedans and not innovating the wrx and sti. All the while, all the other manufacturers including Subaru were killing it with hatchbacks and crossovers. So no surprise. Is the Impreza next? Not that exciting compared to competition.

Subaru is swirling the drain and appear to be going the way of Mistubishi. It's a shame because there's a lot that I like about their cars. My 2017 WRX was the first car I bought brand new. Then they killed the STI and turned the regular WRX into a hideous abomination. Their exclusive focus on EVs is also too much for me compared to other brands like for example Honda and Toyota that are taking a more blended/phased approach to electrification. But on top of all that, I think their cars are just soulless as of late.

Man, this is so sad. I loved the Legacy and thought the last two generations were beautiful vehicles. My take on why the Legacy didn’t sell anymore is that the last three Legacy’s were not in line with what Subaru consumers wanted. Subaru consumers wanted a more rugged AWD sedan like in the early 2000s instead of the elegant designed Legacy which were the last two generations. Very sad because it was a good car. Also Kirk, Mitsubishi’s midsize sedan was the Galant. The Lancer was a compact.

Subaru missed a massive opportunity by not going the hybrid route with the legacy (when the plug in Crosstrek hybrid was released, they could have refined the system) and it was a huge missed opportunity in my opinion. i have a 2018 limited legacy and while im not happy about the cars reliability and CVT though all my issues were fixed under warranty, it is as close to a luxury sedan one can purchase without the hefty price tag. there are so many great features, top notch safety rating, excellent visibility, mileage and AWD. love the car otherwise. if this car had Toyota's E-CVT like the Crosstrek hybrid had (a version of it), i would buy one in a heartbeat. i didn't consider the camry earlier because something or the other was off, but if the forester hybrid doesn't measure up i am going to order the next camry no matter how long i have to wait for it.

Toyota is doing things right, good mpg, coming out with very nice looking cars, only thing they need to add would be manual transmission and awd. Subaru needs to grab this chance and give us a better wrx, and make the sti come back in both the sedan/hatch/wagon. Bring back the impreza for the love of god. I really think Subaru could have tried harder to make the Legacy more appealing. They could have drawn on the Legacy’s rallying pedigree ( pre WRX ) and make it more of a sports/performance car, a notch up from a WRX. I’ve driven the 6th generation and it was nothing to write home about. Look at early Legacy GT models from 3rd and 4th 0:02 generations. These were hot sedans. I’d love Subaru to go out on a limb and create a desirable Legacy not just one that has 4wd and a low price 🫤

Why lease when you can own it after 5 years and drive it another 5 years after that with minimal preventative maintenance. Possibly another 5 after that and another 5 if you do preventative maintenance again. You can easily make a car last 20 years. You pay for 5, and enjoy no car payment for 15 with minor maintenance costs. Better to pay 2k for belts, rotors, pads, and full fluid flush on the entire car every 5 years vs a new lease every 3 years

@@Steve_in_NJ if you have ridiculous low miles each year that is even more of a reason to buy and not lease. You’ll end up with a paid off dependable car. Now if you like the new car every 3 years then yes lease all you want. Is the same concept with renting, wasting money unless you own the home. If you can’t get a loan for the car you want, simply get a cheaper one that fits your budget until you are able to get the one you want. Or look into a used private sale 👍🏻.
