Joni is nothing short of an absolute goddess. She is beautiful and inspiring. My mother was a similar 70s folk singer, even looked a little bit like Joni and I still have her gorgeous Martin D 28 from '72.... this was the song that I paired as audio with her memorial video with all of her photos throughout her colorful life and it was really beautiful, so now whenever I hear it it's just so emotional but in a really very lovely way. Thanks for being someone who really gets it, Fil❤

Hey Fil: As a fellow Canadian, “Both Sides Now” is a quintessentially Canadian song. In fact, many Canadians consider this song as Canada’s unofficial national anthem. I say this because the lyrics are so Canadian. Why? At 4 million square miles, Canada is the second-largest country in the world, yet our population is smaller than that of California. The result of this is that Canadians are spread out thinly across a border with the United States that is over 4,000 miles long, and covers 6 time zones. What this means is that Canadians, for the most part, are humbled by the existence of vast stretches of untamed wilderness that cannot be conquered. And it is this vastness that provides Canadians with a certain degree of humility as well as self-doubt. Unlike our neighbours to the south, who exude confidence and a sense of dominance over their landscape, Canadians view themselves as being hopeful and optimistic, yet often doubtful of our future. And this is why “Both Sides Now” speaks to how Canadians see the world around them: optimistic and grateful to live in a nation that has the highest standard of living in the world, yet we are mindful that we are surrounded by a climate and a wilderness that can crush us and humble us with a single snow storm or flood. In “Both Sides Now”, Joni speaks to Canadians’ inherent self-doubt and our realization that in life, there is a flip-side to everything - that everything in life is a trade-off and that everything good comes at a price. This is a quintessential Canadian trait, and one which differentiates us from our cousins south of the border. Thanks again, Fil, for featuring the work of Joni Mitchell who, along with Gordon Lightfoot, is one of Canada’s poet laureates.

Thanks for another great analysis of Joni Mitchell! "Both Sides Now" is such a great song. Judy Collins first recorded it in 1968. Joni Mitchell is such a great singer songwriter. She covers a lot of genres of music including folk, pop, rock, classical & jazz. She had so many hits especially in the 60's-80's such as "Chelsea Morning", "Help Me", "The Circle Game", "Woodstock", "Raised On Robbery", "Free Man In Paris" etc.

Love this song and her ethereal voice! To me, she is a poet in the way that Bob Dylan is, you just have to listen to every word she says, so it makes sense that she would wait to start singing for the applause to settle down. "Tears and fears and feeling proud To say, "I love you" right out loud Dreams and schemes and circus crowds I've looked at life that way". Right to the heart of it. Thanks for revisiting this!

I absolutely love this song. It is one of the first songs I learned to sing. My grandparents used to encourage me to sing from when I was about 4 years old. I have been singing ever since. My mother has a great, trained classical voice so I inherited some of her structure. We have similar speaking voices too. Anyway, the studio version I knew backwards and forwards, but since she doesn't break in the same places live, it throws me. I am a creature of habit. I thought she was just tired and decided to get through the song faster without a break. 😅

Hi Fil, Just a beautiful performance! Joni is pure talent and has the voice of an Angel. This song just flows so naturally and seamlessly for her voice. And I love the, what I will call free form strumming and tapping technique. Adds so much texture to the song. Seems like she uses long and shorter phases and stops as she is singing, adding even more interest to the song. She just lends so much credence to the Folk /Folk Rock songs of that era. Fabulous analysis and great guitar demonstration. Well Done! And Joni is always a joy and delight to listen to… You Are The Best, Debbie☮️

He’s a bass-baritone singer from around the same time that I really love. Not only was Paul an amazing singer, but he was also an actor, a civil rights activist and even a professional American football player. He played in the NFL from 1920-1922. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1995. I’m not a fan of football but it’s just crazy how multitalented this dude was. The man was truly gifted.
