My knee story, over 40 years I had 13 surgeries, 2 years ago finally just gave up and had full knee replacement. Best thing ever. I can't tell in my everyday life I had this done. I can kneel down etc. Spent years in pain, limping around, passed on doing fun things because I knew my knee would not hold up. In those 13 surgeries, bone graphs, skins graphs etc. Very very long journey to now, new one works better than the other original that I still have. Yes back when this all started had two small ones, was in a wheelchair for 4 weeks in there too. Good luck to you.

I went in for torn meniscus arthroscopic surgery and the surgical notes said it couldn’t be repaired because it was torn off the root. So I Need a full knee replacement. Shot in each knee gave me some relief, 50% feel better. But yeah, I cannot kneel , and use a cane or a crutch. Just waiting on doc to give me the ok

My hubby had a knee surgery and we had 2 little ones. His Mom helped out as much as she could. We made sure that the nights were just him and I. I also made sure I didn't forget to take a shower and do my hair and makeup. Even if I wasn't going anywhere I felt good about myself. You guys are such a great couple!! Play card games, or just talk. I know this is going to be hard but you got this!!!

My husband fell and tore his mcl, acl & meniscus. Doctors used a donor meniscus to replace his. He healed well, just took a long a** time. Sometimes as spouses, just gotta roll with the punches. Praying for you all & I’m sad they want to do surgery again because I know how much that sucks & is no rodeo for Derik either. Hang in there, guys. Praying full & complete protection & healing. 🙏

As a PT who worked in pediatrics in the past, I would definitely take advantage of the Early Intervention program in Utah that somebody else mentioned. Trunk strength is definitely weak as she's not able to sustain a sitting position independently, and she may be developing muscle imbalance and tightness in some key muscle groups. There are some great play-based excises that they can show you and that will help a lot. Best of luck! ❤️

I’m so sorry for the struggle you’ve all been through lately, and the upcoming surgery again for Derik. Sunny may be having a little struggle as well. She may be ‘W’ sitting because she needs a wider base of support to keep from falling. She may have some muscles that are a little tighter and others that are a little weaker so needs to ‘W-sit’ in order to maintain her balance. She may need a little therapy herself. The Early Intervention Program in Utah offers free therapy evaluations in your home if you are interested. You guys are awesome parents! 😊

My now adult Step Daughter and mother of 5 boys ALWAYS sat like that from a young baby girl until the present time. She's NEVER had any hip, leg or any medical Issues because of it. Some children just sit that way. Sunny goes to her Well Child Visits and as a Pediatric Nurse I know the Pediatricians always checks the child's hips. It's not like they have neglected anything as parents!!!

Sarah, my Dr had me buy this stuff last yr called Xlean. It's an all natural nasal spray, w/xylotol(?) in it, and it works wonderfully for stuffy noses, allergies, etc. It helps to disinfect your sinuses by keeping it clear of bacteria & pollutants. I have yr round allergies, live in OR, and prone to sinus infections, & that has helped me sooo much! Praying for complete healing after surgery this time 🙏❤️‍🩹 Have a great Thanksgiving in Hawaii too! 🎉💜 Hard to believe Jack is 3 & Sunny girl almost a yr old! 🥰

Dear Sara and Derek I dont know if this will help but I hope it will. Anyway I had something less major than you it was just a Bakers Cyst that was removed by surgery but let me tell you this just for 1 month I could bearly walk from my bed to toilet. The place felt numbed for 3 years at touching and bending the knee. It took me 5 years to finally bend my knee all the way and fill it back as it was before. Healing takes a lot of time and patience and you need both to have it so you can enjoy the rest of your like pain free so you can do more activities with your children and wife. Sending all my love to you all❤❤❤❤

Only advice is to remember it is only 6 weeks - sounds a lot but if you put a calendar of the time on the fridge or something and let the kids and Sarah mark off each day/week it will whizz by - maybe give yourselves a joint reward at the end of each week (dinner out without the kids etc..) to maintain your connection (instead of nurse/patient) 😘

I'm 67 now but 20 years ago I finally had both knees replaced. The best decision ever. I had all of the other surgeries. They were so much worse. My physical therapy was salmon fishing. You had to go over logs under branches and through raspberry bushes....my surgeon was so happy with my healing. The recovery was soooooo much faster than the others. I had needed replacements since I was 15 and had a speed skiing accident. Don't fear replacements.

I am so sorry, Derik (and Sarah, too!) I have a history with my knee that includes a couple of meniscus surgeries and it is always hard being in the recovery portion where it just feels so confining and takes enormous patience and resilience and can really take such a toll on everyone's mental health. I am happy to report that there was a light at the end of the tunnel and a LOT of time being able to do a lot of things again -- but it did require much more discernment and caution than I used to proceed with. There also were some things that I just really couldn't do anymore. BUT...there is so much life on the other side and I really believe you can do this and will get through the hard moments! You guys have such a great support system and I encourage you both to rely on it as much as you need and definitely make room to take care of yourselves and do other things that fulfill you (more mind and spirit and less body for just a while!). Wishing you all the best!

I had a full open knee surgery when my ACL detached from the femur bone. I had a 9 month old at the time and 8 weeks after the surgery I found out I was pregnant with baby #2. Six months into the pregnancy my ACL came off again and I have never had anything else done to it, I was 19 and was told I needed a new knee but if I did get it done I would be looking at many surgeries over my lifetime. I just let the other ligaments compensate for the lost ACL but I have always felt a severe lack of stability and it honestly kept me from doing many many things during the last 27 years because I was always terrified my knee would completely fall apart. Now my "Good" knee has popped a ligament so I walk around like I'm going to fall at any second. Don't live with any instability in your knees because it will seriously impact how you live your life in ways you would never think.

Hey guys! I know Sunny only wanting to sit on her knees isn’t something you love talking about, but I’m glad you have because I can give you some advice! My 22 month old little girl did the same thing ever since she could crawls and she is now having to take physical therapy as well as wear “AFOS” because sitting like that caused too much pronation in her feet/ankles and it’s too unstable for her to walk now. Sunny seems to be doing much better than my LO, but I do advise you to do your best to discourage her from doing that so you don’t have a 2 year old walking on their knees like me. Thankfully physical therapy is doing wonders and we’ve got a goal of her walking by her birthday!

I just commented about this too! I don’t have kids but I grew up sitting like that until I was 15, when I was diagnosed with PFS. I still deal with lots of pain from it. I’m glad you’re able to get your child into physical therapy, it wasn’t very well known when I was younger and none of us thought there was any concern.

Dude, I did research and found that when you have bad knee problems it's best to do a full knee replacement. I just had mine done in April 2023 and I'm 41 and not even close to good health like you all and it was the best choice I could have made. I had a meniscus tear and they did a surgery and removed it and it did the same thing as yours so I said do the full replacement. No regrets at all.

Girl…I can relate to you so much. My husband is on week 4 post op from ankle surgery and it is ROUGH. I have 3 small children at home and sicknesses are constantly just circulating through the house. What seemed to work for ME (it’s kind of harsh, but this is how my brain works and how I cope) is to not let myself feel sorry for me for a second. No one is coming to save me from taking care of everyone (sometimes grandparents help which is appreciated) but it doesn’t do my mental health any good to feel sorry for myself. I hope this comes across helpful🙏😂 The work is nonstop until the kids are in bed and then I give myself a few hours to refill my cup before I go to bed, but during the day it is full on! I've had both the surgeries. The full knee surgery on my left knee. It actually went well. Long recovery, but I've had no problems afterwards, it's been 33 years. Then after a dislocation on my right knee, just had the laparoscopic surgery. Sadly I've had a lot of problems with it. I'm actually in a knee brace now for extra support because of the knee being very weak. I wish you the best. Jack and Sunny are growing up so fast.💜

Guys I’ve been there- probably the most important thing is hiring someone to help with the kids. They are super active and Sarah can’t do it all. I like to make some meals in advance and freeze them. Put an ice cooler next to the bed to get your own drinks. Get everything as set up as you can for immobility. Don’t guilt trip yourself out or worry. Do lots of gentle stretching before and after. Oh and stay barefoot on the beach the entire time you’re in Hawaii 🥰🌺🌴🌊🌅

Feeling interested in sharing the crepe recipe? I’d love to try them. Derik you are correct about Sunny’s knees. That is the worst position for them to sit it. It can do damage to their legs. Good of you all to stop that. My suggestion. Hire a friend or a nanny for 6 weeks to help Sara. Or if family will rotate weeks that could help too. Have you heard of a meal train? Usually between friends or Church groups. Every night someone brings a meal in for you. If you want more info on that I can get you a link. Pray. Never enough. Derick I had back to back knee surgeries only mine were replacements. In Jan a partial and in August full replacement. Unfortunately, to the same knee. It is no fun. Would you be able to use a Walker vs crutches? Take your pain meds as prescribed for at least 2 weeks. 🎉 keep the knee elevated. Ask your Dr for a machine that sends cold water thru a hose to your knee. Those are so much better than holding an ice pack. In mine we used bottles of water frozen . I’ll look up the name if interested. I’m really sorry you have to go thru this again. I’m still waiting to be able to drive again. I’ll be praying for you both.

After helping my husband through two knee replacements within 6 months I would suggest to Sarah, schedule a babysitter outside of the house. Make it a schedule for the sitter and for you! You need time for yourself, you need time for keeping the house up, you need time for you and Derik! The kids will bounce back and it will also help them with growing through the separation anxiety. Go to the gym, go get your nails done, go get your hair done etc. Get Derik an in home wheel chair, they are narrower. Get a shower seat so he can tend to his bathroom needs easier. If your shower doesn't have a hand held shower sprayer, get one installed before the next surgery. Prep some meals before hand. When you make dishes now, make enough for a second meal and freeze them. It's cheaper and easier to pop out and defrost or put directly into the oven. I don't know if you have them in your area but do grocery order pick-up, you don't have time to be wandering around the grocery store, let someone else do that! When the kids go for naps, all of you go for naps!!! That's a few things I could recommend, hopefully this time Derik's knee heals and this is the last of the surgeries...

I'm a daycare teacher and this maybe a good or a not so good suggestion. Maybe look into part time daycare during this time. A couple mornings a week to give you time to get things done, to rest or do your hobbies. Depending on your kids it may not be worth the adjustment they'd have to go through adapting to a new environment but they also might love it. Other kids to play with, other toys then at home, fun activities. Just a thought. Also might not be worth the time looking for a good daycare or getting into a daycare as space can be limited.

😢 sorry to hear you need more surgery. I can sympathize with you. I destroyed both my knees at 8 years old. I popped both knee caps out of place and was drugged around in a circle for about 3 minutes. That was back in 1964. Surgery was extreme back then. With no guarantee that the surgery would even help so my parents decided that there wouldn't be any surgery. I now have no cartilage, bone spurs and severe arthritis because through the years they continued to pop out of place. So once they do this surgery please allow your knee all time needed to heal, I know that isn't going to be easy.

To help your knee heal and prevent further complications drink unfiltered aloe vera juice twice a day. 1/4 of a cup. You can put the aloe in a smoothie. Or if you can simply down it straight (like me) go for it. Also take 3 omega fish oil daily. I guarantee your knee will heal 60%faster. Also, continue this regiment throughout your life. I had a serious sky accident when I was 22 yrs old. I never had the surgeries on both my knees, although the knee doctor said it was necessary. Instead I started drinking aloe vera and taking omega and fast forward 50 yrs I never had to have the surgery

Been through similar situation as a young couple with young children. My advice…..hire a couple teenage girls from your church to come over and help with kids in afternoons to help Sara. More time for weekends and they can help with laundry and chores too and so she gets breaks and can run errands or just go to lunch with a friend. This will help a lot! God bless! I second this. I had bought a new condo, and had so many congestion and dryness issues until we realized the floor planks were separating in some places and called the construction manager back to have a look. He said the humidity level was very low at 20% and to humidify the air. That made such a huge difference for us! Apparently new construction sucks up all the humidity for a while.

Good luck with the surgery, D! When I had surgery when my kiddos were young, my hubby was awesome! I had a full hysterectomy at 29. I was able to ship the younger 2 kiddos out to my sister-in-luv for the initial part of my recovery, and my mother-in-luv came over for another couple weeks to help out. I was fortunate that my oldest was 11 at the time and could help. The Church we went to all pitched in with meals, so there was one less thing to worry about. Let friends and family help, even if it's to go pick up a grocery order or prescription, fold clothes. Take D to PT, whatever. Ya'll have a wonderful support system. Use it! One day, you'll be able to return the favor.

Quick edit: I am not trying to be negative or make it seem like you’re not doing the right steps. The fact that you’re noticing it is enough! Physical therapy can help a lot! I just got to the part where Derik was talking about how Sunny sits, and I agree definitely work on getting her to sit differently. I grew up sitting in the “W” position and I developed PFS ( patella femoral syndrome, or runners knee) by the time I was 15. I deal with a lot of pain to this day, I’ve found ways to cope but there’s not way to fix it at this point. My parents just never knew it would be an issue back in the day, and most kids grow out of sitting that way. But I never did lol. I am not a parent and not at all trying to tell you what to do, just thought I would put in my experience since he had expressed concern.

Don't beat yourselves up. Some things are just out of your control. But, having the right mindset is key and is something you can control. Patience is difficult, especially when you are active with children. But, just keep following the doctors advice. You will get better, and the love for each other and your children is the support that will always see you through. Always. ❤ I have a painting in my bedroom. It's the first thing I see when I open my eyes. It's a goldfish 🐠 wearing a 🦈 fin which says, "Mindset is everything". Keep up the positive mindset, and that's half the battle. You all have this! Have a friend come over to help meal prep and freeze some things. Don't be afraid to throw your net out wide and get help, be creative. Dont be afraid to say no during this time, dont take on too much. Keep life as simple as possible. Prayers and hugs. Ignore all these people trying to act like you cant parent. Sarah, have you considered allergies. Maybe you should consider talking to an allergist. Builders use all kinds of things to put a new home together. You could be allergic to the brand of paints they used or the glues used to put stuff together. You could be allergic to the carpets or whatever was used to set down wood floors or linoleum because sometimes glues are terrible. Also, my allergist said no carpet in the bedroom. They tend to gather dust.etc. no matter how much you clean. I also notice when I vacuum, there is a smell from it that makes my eyes water and my nose plug up. I am also allergic to dust, trees, and all kinds of flowers. Not supposed to have my dogs on my bed. Too much hair problems and stuff they bring in from outdoors. I take two allergy pills a day and use a nose inhaler and a mouth inhaler twice a day or more in the spring during polin season. 😢 Hope this helps. Also, I am sorry that Derrick has to have knee surgery again. But at least you are going back to Hawaii for a visit. I am so envious!!!!! 😊 Have a good time! SECOND THOUGHT: get a humidifier for the bedroom that puts outs moisturizing the room. I have one a d I love it. Try that before the allergist. I also agree - get a nanny and a housekeeper while Derrick is recovering from his next surgery. You still have not recovered from moving into the house by yourself and putting everything away, taking care of Derrick from his surgery, dealing with two small, busy children and their problems adjusting to sleeping in a new environment, and everything else you do. You are exhausted and need to take care of yourself. Try taking a nap when the kids do. Have Derrick get them up from nap and play with them so you can sleep as long as possible. Otherwise, You will have burnout going into this😢 next surgery. You deserve a break.!!!!!

You make some excellent points. We've lived in our new home for 10 years and I'm still having allergies and allergic reactions to all that stuff from it. Plus where they disturb the ground to put the slab, it imposes a threat to whatever was living there. We battled field roaches for the first 5 years and are still dealing with the fire ants. And this was a rebuild from the ground up, only bigger and in a little different spot. Everyone I've known that's had to have that 2nd Meniscus surgery (and it happens a lot) either has had problems with their knee for the rest of their life or just break down and have it removed. One day soon there will be all kinds of interchangeable body parts, so we won't have to be fixed, we'll just get a newer better version. Have a great day 😀 ❤

Ultimately, what a total of 12 -15 weeks is a drop in a bucket compared to a lifetime! Just be very careful in the future with that knee. You may consider wrapping it every time you are doing something that will put extra pressure on that knee. When he gets his next surgery, you need to call on the kindness of friends and family! I suspect that just about EVERYONE told you to contact them if you need help, but I bet you really didn't until it was time to actually move into the new house! Remember, you'd be more than happy to help out your friends and family if they had surgery or illness and were in need of help! Let them help you, too! Spread it out between your friends and family! Don't put it all on one person, but make a schedule! Everyone knows how challenging it is to try to get things done while your kids are underfoot! Have someone come in a couple of days a week to watch the kids (and help Derek with getting something to eat, etc) while you get stuff done around the house, run errands, get work done, etc.! I know you probably hate to ask for help...I know I have a hard time asking for help...but then I remember, I'm happy to help other when they are in need, they will feel the same!!

My suggestions for you to help cope with your upcoming life situations: Accept what is coming and don’t fight it…embrace it. Know it’s a blessing that Derick will be eventually healed because we live in this time and place. Hire a nanny and a housekeeper. A clean, orderly home will make you feel so happy inside. A nanny will free you to do your work, let you have some alone time and give you the time to do your errands and rest when you need. She doesn’t need to be full time, maybe 3 days a week will give you the time you need, at least for awhile. Meal plan, at least breakfast and dinners. Your mind, household and budget will run much smoother. These things will all give you peace. Wishing you all everything good and Derick much success and healing as he moves forward in his health journey. Xoxoxo Kim

@@alexandracosta2471 that’s great Alexandra. We now know that with “W” sitting the sitter is using their legs to keep them balanced and not their core. It can cause issues with gross and fine motor development Sitting in the W-position too often may create tight muscles in the legs and hips. If the muscles are tight, they may inhibit normal motion, affecting the child’s developing coordination and balance. The muscles that are affected include the hamstrings, hip adductors, and the Achilles tendon. W-sitting may be a sign that your child is avoiding coordination and/or independent movement on the right and left sides of the body. Sitting in the W-position limits motion of the trunk and discourages reaching across the body.

You can do it, be diligent with weight bearing, I know it's hard and frustrating.. but important. You need to heal but Sara, you need a helper/assistant. Even if just a few days a week. To help w the kids, laundry, etc. would relieve some of the demand. You're both worth every penny for what it would potentially cost. Not for anything else, saw in your vlogs you have not really completely healed yet but you assumed many usual things like socials like wedding, on an active adventure trip in Lake Pal, maybe others which we didn't see, so if you did follow STRICTLY the caition to observe and the time to wait you would be healed, then it would have been complete healing. Patience is a virtue, aside from you're not that spring chicken anymore, you are prone to accidents but fond of procrastination too instead of taking prompt medical attention, you first prioritized adventure and trips. If you would be operated again to fix the miniscule problem again now, it's fine but practice patience and restraint now to be completely healed. As for the total OPEM KNEE surgery, THAT WILL TAKE LONGER time to heal and if you didn't patiently wait again to completely heal, then more contraints later on. You might be totally crippled. You should note that going under the knife has risks too and the major operations have more. And throwing kids like that is not good for kid's health. Sunny's spine can be injured like Jack's. God gave you normal kids and hard if they develop illnesses later like deformities in spine or mobility issues.

Secondly make sure you ask the doctor what other structures can be damaged as I too have had an ACL reconstruction and a meniscus reattachment . While attaching, the meniscus back to the bone, they accidentally hit my Peroneal Nerve causing foot drop. I had absolutely no control over my foot and it took eight months for the nerve to heal. It’s been over a year. I’m still recovering as I still have lost The sensation on the leg, so my leg still feels numb, I am able to move the foot now, but I have a lot of pain and a lot of walking issues and I’ve recently had another MRI because my knee is still not right so just be aware that foot drop is a thing that I am finding out has happened a lot to people that have had both knee surgeries and hip replacements so just make sure you really know everything

As someone who has had repeated knee injuries. I have had a small tear in my ACL I opted for no surgery and wore a huge brace for about a year. It did heal. My meniscus tore and I opted again to just leave it. It does go sideways every now and then. Not like with an ACL tear though. It’s too late to tell you to take extra care of your knees. What I will say is I don’t think I’d go for having them open it all the way up. I’d way the pros and cons of just leaving it like it is. The more and more they go in and screw with it the worse it will get. In my opinion the worst pain in my life has been knee pain from osteoarthritis. The more the screw with it the more scar tissue. You do what you feel is right. Can you snow board/ski and surf without the surgery? Or if this huge surgery is done is it going to improve your ability to do the things you want. As for the stress at home with recovery. How good is your insurance? Sometimes they will pay for a caregiver to come in and help out. Which would be extremely beneficial. Or having family come help out. The most important thing Sarah is take care of you hop in the shower, put on your makeup take 15 minutes of meditation or a run/walk everyday! Sending love, strength and prayers your way 💞

Derik, I have had that surgery before in 2010. You’re prolly gonna always have issues with the knee, but not as bad of course. Arthritis will be a banger for ya, but at least you can take advil for it and that helps. God bless you both! Ciao fro Jackson Hole, WY

It is so difficult when you are in pain like that and have little ones around. My husband and I are going through it too. I’m glad there is going to be relief for Derek, there is not really any relief they can give my husband for his pain at the moment, they are trying but it’s not really working. Continue sticking together, I’d say that’s the biggest thing I’m trying to do and it’s so difficult sometimes. You guys make it look easy. Tons of good thoughts headed your way ❤️❤️❤️

I would be super careful with throwing sunny on the bed pillows like that. I know it seems harmless, but her brains verrrry gentle like jello, and that can cause shaken baby syndrome.

@aqualife88 My son used to do that with my grandkiddos, but he made sure to hold their necks on the way down.

They shouldn’t throw her at all. It only takes one bad throw and she is in the Peds ICU. There is no reason for them to throw their kids like that.

Painful to watch. Please educate yourselves on the risks. They may enjoy it, but it’s not safe.

Last summer (six months ago) I had a TKR - a total knee replacement…. Huge surgery, BUT… best thing I’ve done in awhile. I can hike again! Patience however is key. I know you’re not at that level- just know that patience and protein drinks are key..( and assistance from others ) Hang in there- you got this!
