To answer one of the questions Stephen asked in regards to the helicopter and how it knows where to go itself: To orient itself it will use visual odometry (using a camera), altitude measurement using lidar, gyro and tilt sensors and a zigbee to communicate and to track the position, plotting its own coordinates inside its miniature Linux based computer (same cpu as an older Samsung Galaxy phone). Zigbee communication is effective up to about 1000m or even farther and has been tested with UAVs on Earth already so in that sense it's pretty exciting to see it work on another planet. It works very similar in that sense to some of the commercial Parrot copters you can buy that can follow your phone around - very similar open source tracking software, except that it's tracking the rover via zigbee communication

I'm such a huge nerd that I was nodding along with your comment, yeah, that's right, we have a statue of Cochrane, he's a scientist... even though I know that Zephram Cochrane's statue hasn't been built yet because he hasn't made his great discoveries yet because he hasn't been born yet because he only exists in the parallel universe where Star Trek is true.

Space Hotel? As someone from a former colony, I’d prefer space exploration to space exploitation.

Colony? Anyways, they're talking space stations that function as hotels, a company called Bigelow Aerospace is trying to design one with inflatable modules, a technology NASA was working on until the feds told it to stop and sold all the tech and patents back in the 1990s (I think). A few years ago they sent a test module to the ISS, they called it a the BEAN. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bigelow_Expandable_Activity_Module

All this money spent searching for life on other planets, while even more money is spent extinguishing life on Earth.

It's sad we're too primitive to cooperate on a global scale and handle our Earthly problems while also exploring space It's always thought to think about how far we could be if racism, sexism, etc. were not the acceptable norms until basically the past 3-5 decades. WE are so primitive and have so far to go.

Perhaps if you remember when the photo from the moon of "Earth Rise" made the news and the world saw just how insignificant we were to the Whole Thing. How if we can't put together this little puzzle of ours how the HELL are we gonna deserve to Go Out ANYWHERE?! When you know the Goodness to come-you work hard to get it. As Captain Miller said "Earn This- Earn It!"

I imagine if we ever discover intelligent life. It would be anticlimactic. “Hey we found life but they’re 20 light years away and the have roughly have the same technology as us. So neither of us can travel to the other and messages take 20 years to receive.”
