About 2 weeks ago I replaced a condenser fan motor in a 1964 side discharge Lennox. Added 2lbs of R22 and she was blowing ice cubes. I'm sure its inefficient but it worked and the lady can't afford a new one. It was original to house and owner.

I bought my stockpile of R22 cheaper than you can buy ANY of the stand-in imposters. I bought it to protect my customers from the whole "Freon scam" that has been imposed on us. Don't get me wrong I do like the R410a ok and it is very efficient, but... being forced is a bummer. I saw it coming and beat the system.

I was smart enough to stockpile plenty of R22 before it sky-rocketed in price... therefore I don't have to work myself to death flushing and or draining etc. just to use stand ins like the one you mentioned. Even if I did have to pay high price for the 22, I am not selling it to myself, so it is what it is.

The EPA's legal date where R22 cannot be added to this unit is Jan 1 2030. Thus if the unit is 1 Lb low in Oct 2029 a tech can add that lb legally. Some AC units see little usage. The unit may be way up north or in a building that is not used. Oddly a brand new R410a system and this old beast in 2030 might both still work, or not. Older equipment often had thicker coils and thus few leaks. R410a is not thermodynamically better than R22, it is actually worse with a large delta T say in the Middle East Desert areas. The only way modern AC units have a higher EER and SEER is via inverters, variable speed motors, adding a TXV or EEV valve. The basic thermodynamics is boxed in by the testing inside and outside temperatures. With EER it is 80 and 95 F . SEER is higher since the temperature difference is less than 15F for many of the tests that are averaged to get SEER.

Do you think that maybe the head pressure might be on the high side due to the side cover not being on while checking your charge? 52 psi seems kind of low on a 80 degree day. Also not to question you but why no Superheat readings? Or subcooling if there’s a txv on there? Pressures only tell you 1/2 the story. Again not trying to question you or your knowledge, I respect the work you do based on some of your other videos. Thanks and god bless
@TedCookHVAC6 жыл бұрын
Good question but no, not in this case... the covers that were off are louvered anyway and the design of the unit does not allow any bypass of either coil with what I was doing. There is no TXV only a distributor and not even a piston... probably could have used a flush but that is way too much work and money to put in a 33 year old unit. He is a friend and I was just getting him by for a while.

I’d assume those pressures are fine with the condition of the system. I know it was a “getter by” job. But I’m sure if you would of got video, that the blower wheel surely had some build up, at least slightly , and I bet the Evap at least has SOME restriction. Maybe 1 more ounce of gas to keep from being slightly uncomfortable with it freezing when the filter gets 3 weeks old

@TedCookHVAC6 жыл бұрын
I Have not tried any of the "stand ins" for R22 at all and likely never will... I have quite a bit of R22 I was smart enough to buy up before it skyrocketed after the beginning of the phase out. I was stock piling it up in 2009 and early 2010 before it was so outrageous in price. I watched the whole thing with R12 happen in the early 90s and decided to bet the game on this one as soon as we all got word of what was coming.
@tech50326 жыл бұрын
Anti DIY HVAC. ok I see I bit using a lot. On leak repairs when customers can’t afford me equipment. The only thing is different is the oil. It uses POE oil. You will have to drain the mineral oil and add the same amount of POE.
@TedCookHVAC6 жыл бұрын
So exactly how would one "drain" the mineral oil from a system ? Especially a packaged system ? So would you actually flush with solvent ? How would you remove the oil from the compressor ? I assume you would accept the fact that some amount of mineral oil will remain in the system.... and the 407c is formulated to emulsify the added POE oil and circulate it sufficiently ? I understand that many people are using cheaper alternatives to R22, I just do not understand why. I learned two things a while back about the cost of equipment and or supplies in the industry... number one is, no matter how expensive it is, I am not selling it to myself. Number two is, do not seek a customer who can't afford you, set prices and stick to them.... Let them work out their money problems instead of me trying to find a way to fit a limited budget. This particular unit belongs to a friend of mine who is a plumber and he will buy the new one from me without any doubt. The cost of this repair will be a credited deposit towards the new one when we install it. Also, the most I ever paid for any R22 is between 3 and 4 dollars per pound. I can afford to use it to protect my customers and insure sales of the new systems. If for some reason a customer backed out on the new sale after I sold them the R22.... I am fine and have profited either way. Some of the local companies here are getting as much as 100.00 per pound !! So just for my own knowledge and understanding, exactly how much would you have charged for a repair like this one with the 407c conversion ?
@tech50326 жыл бұрын
Anti DIY HVAC you can used 11 flush. And the compressor can be cut and drain it. R407c is 25 per Lb where I live. I don’t know how much is there. Put I do this in cases where the leak is repairable. Not in a coil. And where the compressor is bad and there is not a leak on a system. That will be a perfect candidate. I just did a package unit where there was not leak but the compressor was not pumping . I just used R-11 flush and replace the filter dryer. The new compressor comes with POE already. I just make sure a flush it really go and I do a triple evacuation. But that’s a personal choose from the customer. I seen some guys here in KZbin just adding Poe oil in top of mineral. And I think that’s wrong but is their choose. R22 around here is crazy I heard people getting charged $130 per LB but that’s crazy.
@TedCookHVAC6 жыл бұрын
I assume you mean you would have cut the compressor loose in this case and unbolt it to tilt it and drain it ? Then you would use rx11 to flush the rest of the system ? Seems to me the work of all that plus the cost of the rx11 flush would not compare well to the simple repair you see in the video. Maybe in some other case it would prove to be an advantage but I personally just don't see it. Maybe I would feel different if I were buying R22 at the 589.00 per jug most around here pay now. Last summer it was over 800.00 per jug.... so again let me ask you, how much would the repair I did in the video have cost the customer with the 407c conversion you are speaking of ?
