Not a smart business move at all, since you depreciate that and a full-size truck at the same rate, and at the end, have less of an asset to sell off. I'll edit this because there are many that don't understand the math. Full-size trucks are worth more at their end of depreciation than compacts, so you sell that depreciated asset off at a higher price. There will be no difference in non-deductible ancillary costs during the life of ownership that will not be overcome with the final capital sale of the vehicle.
@wildbill23c

@@MikeF055 Have you seen what Ford Rangers and similar trucks are selling for now? A few years ago you could pickup a Ranger, S10, etc. for less than $1000, just about scrap, now if you find a $1,000 compact pickup it should be in the scrap yard...$4k for a beat up, really beat up 2wd compact pickup now...and if you want one that's gonna last ya several years you are paying 1/2 of what it cost new 10-15 years ago. Yeah, a full size truck might sound cool, but many don't need one, and the used market for them is as bad as the compacts right now. So it really depends on the buyer and what they need/want. Many hunters want the little trucks because they're small enough to get down the trails for relatively cheap compared to an ATV or UTV.

@@MikeF055 he didn't say what model he ordered, but if it's the hybrid, how much fuel costs did he save over that of a full size truck? and mind you Roofers prefer Van's anyway, so a $21,500 XL truck for his sales guys is perfect. I understand your points of depreciation and such, but he's saving 50% right off the bat.

@Stay at Home Dad - depends on the dealer and the equipment she buys. If you order it from Ford through some dealers (Long Mc Arthur in rural KS, with a substantial YT presence, is one of them, but there are others as well) you may get the one YOU want WITHOUT ADM AT MSRP (the best you can hope for, as dealer stock has LOTS OF ADM FAT on them). If you keep it as a FWD with the 2.5L Hybrid it can get as low as in the U$23-24K range OTD for a "steelie" XL. One many would like (an XLT FWD Hybrid with medium equipment) can go below U$28K OTD that way.... That's still way below the U$41K AVERAGE (fat included) transaction price for all new vehicles.
@syxepop
@syxepop 2 жыл бұрын
Try ORDERING it from Ford from a dealer such as I mention below on this thread or others in or out of state, that promise to sell Mavericks AT MSRP (do your homework on the Net). Equip it as you like and you may get a nice surprise on the price (don't expect deals on units already on stock units at almost any dealer). Remember that hybrids were not delivered to dealers on initial launch and that the T-2.0L adds U$1100 and AWD adds a total of U$2300, as the Turbo is required for AWD (the towing package goes on top of AWD prices).

If I need to tow an RV, or something like that, I'll buy an f-150. If I need to tow a mountain up another mountain, I'll buy a super duty. But I don't need any of those things, I just need to haul a couch or an exercise bike a few times a year. It would be nice to have a truck, but I don't need a truck so badly that I'm willing to live with truck compromises. In comes the maverick, a hybrid that gets 15 more miles per gallon in the city than our '09 Kia Rio. Thats affordable, that's cool looking, and extremely durable on paper. That's who the maverick appeals to, the hatchback owner, not most of your ranger or super-duty owner.

Just throwing this out there for the uninformed, this is NOT a traditional CVT. There are no belts, clutches, or wear parts of any kind in this transmission. It is entirely gear driven, with every gear in mesh all the time, even in park. It's one of the most unkillable transmissions ever designed. In a nutshell, there are two electric motors. One is used to control engine RPM, by varying its own RPM (similar to a differential), as well as start the engine and generate electricity. The other is directly connected to the axle, and is used for regen braking, EV driving, and reverse. It's also mated to one of the most reliable engines ever made. The Ford 2.5 isn't all that outstanding in terms of power, but they tend to run forever, rivaling even the venerable Ford 300 I6 in terms of durability.

They even put them in tractors cuz they were soo tough.. .. I dont see too many 2.5s in tractors. Not saying the 2.5 is a bad motor. @@seanbutler2291 I've owned and had plenty of experience with both, and my experience directly mirrors any data I've found. Most recent for me are a '96 F-150 300 with 190K miles, a 2009 Escape hybrid with 150K miles, and a 2010 Fusion hybrid with 210K miles. I do tow trailers with the Fusion (2Klbs) and Escape (3Klbs). 300 I6 engines can and do easily top 500K miles, but they do have minor issues that usually need to be addressed by then. The phenolic timing gears are known to crack, fuel rails can overheat, distributors have minor issues, etc. Few and far between, but they do exist. 2.5 Duratecs are also known to top 500K miles, especially in taxi service. Most cars that have them end up being junked because the chassis or transmission goes bad, with the engine still running perfectly. They have their issues too, but nothing major. Things like throttle body motors, engine mounts, etc. Also very minor.

I like how they complain about certain things and put in “for only 27k I should have satellite and a quiet cab” etc. and I’m here trying to understand how they are building a hybrid starting at 20k that’s more usable than a Honda Accord. Seriously I get they have to critique things but you get a little truck hybrid with heated seats and steering wheel and apple car play/android auto. For 27k in this insane overinflated market. That’s a straight win. And you can’t compare the ranger. To get a full 4 door and 4x4 on a base Model XL trim it’s 33k… that’s how much a loaded maverick is with the 4k package awd lariat heated seats the works. And a slightly roomier rear seat configuration. You either build value in the ranger with tech or features or lower the price. The ranger doesn’t even get integrated trailer brakes!!! Also I’m happy when Andre and Nathan do the Ike I like the perspective from them two. Glad grumpy Roman doesn’t do them anymore. Anyways good episode thanks for doing this for us.

They get their music (and Podcasts of FLT) online or downloaded. Sat radio has a 3.6% take rate for vehicles like this. I subscribe to Sirius/XM in multiple vehicles. However, over time, been dumping them. They served a great purpose over the years. The tongue weight of the trailer unloads the front axle of the tow vehicle and you can get stuck with the front wheels spinning madly on even modest grades. A weight distributing hitch is essential to tow with FWD even with a very light (2000 lb) trailer and a 200-300 lb tongue weight.

Well said!! More people need to know how important load equalizer hitches really are! There are so many KZbin RVers out there that have totalled their units and damaged or totalled their units that are saying they crashed due to not using the hitches and sway control. Multiply that by the number of other people out there with improperly hitched up units,,,,,,. I responded to so many accidents with RVs rolled over. Not all with positive outcomes for the people. There were fatalities over the years.

Some people need to do more research when doing drives or reviews on vehicles. The E-CVT in the Maverick is a lot like the Toyota Prius, Rav 4 and Highlander Hybrid Transmissions. They are also E-CVTs. They have a Planetary Gear Set (which Toyota calls a Power Split Device) which is driven via an Electric Motor/Generator and varies its speed to give you Variable Gear Ratios, no belts or pulleys needed or used. Much less moving parts than a typical Automatic or Belt driven CVT transmission. Go check out Weber Automotives video on the Toyota Rav 4 E-CVT Transmission, they go into great detail on how it all works, very informative.

I believe he did call it a power split.. But they should highlight the eCVT as being completely different than the old Belt driven CVT. ( I don't mind it at all as it puts the engine in it's most efficient power band.)

I think your videos on trucks are great. I do have one recommendation I think would be a good addition to your testing programs. I own a full size truck and personally towing, payload, handling under load are all applicable tests for a truck. However 0 - 60 is useless to me since a truck I fell should be rated on it's capabilities as a truck not racing. 1 second faster or slower is of no consequence. My recommendation is to have braking tests. How well does a vehicle stop when empty,loaded , towing and towing while carrying a full load. This is directly related to the safety of a vehicle and should be tested in the real world.

Truck newbie here. The Maverick can tow 2,000 pounds and has 1,500 payload does that mean you can have both and the truck will still move? So tow 2k lbs along with 1,500 lbs in the bed?
@jameswitte5676
@jameswitte5676 2 жыл бұрын
No. 1,500 is your max payload. If your towing 2,000 pounds, that puts about 200 pounds on your hitch. That leaves you 1,300 pounds from which you must deduct your weight and the weight of your passengers. Then there is GVWR - gross vehicle weight rating. This is the max allowed weight for the vehicle, passengers, cargo and trailer. The GVWR will probably prevent you from maxing out your payload AND towing capacities at the same time. I don’t see a listing for the Maverick’s GVWR by Ford.

Guys, it's a pickup truck. Don't get messed up by the lack of a body on frame architecture. You wouldn't say the XJ Jeep Cherokee isn't an SUV because it was unibody. If it has an open bed for cargo it's a truck. The Maverick is a fine light duty truck that 80% of people can live with. Big enough bed for dirty things like mulch, can carry something you found at an antique store, enough of a tow rating for motorcyles and small water craft, and with the 4K tow package it'll handle a decent sized boat or camping trailer. The ground clearance and AWD will handle a typical forest road to that back country camping site you like. If you need more truck get more truck. No one is stopping you. The Maverick is just like the Honda Ridgeline, but one size smaller: Enough truck for what most people actually need.

The Ranger is always a few thousand more! The Maverick has more content though!! A loaded Maverick is more than a base Ranger, that happens with all size classes of pickups in all the brands,,,,,, always has been the issue since they started offering heavily optioned small trucks. It’s kind of a “duh no kidding” type of comment. Pointless.

They arent saying they are the same price, they are saying for a few thousand more u get a vehicle that is made FAR FAR better. U shouldnt hear a lil 2.0 hybrid at almost 80 decibels, it was at least 5-7 decibels louder in the cab than the 7.3 big block with pipes, this indicates cheap construction and insulation. I could go get a 2012 escape used for a few grand and prolly get it all optioned out, and do everything the maverick will do, cuz they are the same vehicle. And the escape will do better off-road, better approach and departure angles.

@@seanbutler2291 - I don’t consider the Hybrid when I make a comment. I should have clarified that. I have experience with the 2.0 EcoBoost with AWD. That will be quiet as the Bronco Sport, if not a bit quieter. That is the Maverick I would compare to the Ranger. The Hybrid has some expensive technology and some very high fuel economy ratings that are proving true that warrant a bit of a premium. If you get the front wheel drive model, it’s for very different reasons than the AWD models. Like I said feature for feature they don’t compare. I also said the Maverick offers more features than the Ranger. If you want a truck that gets great fuel economy to haul occasionally and are considering a Maverick, the Ranger isn’t even close to being an option. None of the mid size trucks are. It stands alone as an offering really, especially here in Canada as you can only get the Santa Cruz in AWD and very heavily optioned. Just over 20K for a hybrid pickup?? Nothing compares, and that’s ok, just don’t compare. The reason I always say feature for feature.

The $20,000 hybrid has everything you need in a truck like this and the most basic Ranger isn't a few thousand more, it's 25% more, and will use probaly $3000 more in fuel over the first 100,000 miles.

eCVT means that there is NO actual transmission. Its just the engine connected (only by wire) to the electric motor. The electric motor controller acts as the 'transmission' by spinning the motor faster or slower and with direct connection to the drive axles spinning the wheels faster or slower. Ingenious really. Simple too. But I hate those calling it a CVT like there is an actual transmission. If there is one then show me in the video and point to it. Then point to the electric drive motor. I'm really really glad you reviewed the hybrid too! You towed with it! You could have told us abiout traction in the snow. How good was it? it Looked good to me. Its much better than some heavy full size truck in 2wd. Those tire bust loose easy even in the rain.

Love this little truck, probably am going to order one to replace my aging 2008 Jeep Liberty. But MAN did they miss a trick when they didn't give the Hybrid AWD. I'm telling you, if they had a Hybrid with AWD, I wouldn't still be hemming and hawing. If they gave the Hybrid AWD AND the FX4 and 4K tow packages I'd already have one in my driveway.

@@venomstrike4418 Maybe. there is an issue with the horsepower on the Hybrid though. I suspect that's why they didn't. (I guess it only has like 180hp, vs the 250 of the gas model) So they will have to address that too. Doesn't matter for me, by the time that comes out I will already have the gas model in my driveway.

They call it an 'eCVT' because it *isn't* a CVT in the sense of a mechanical device with variable-diameter pulleys driven by belt/chain. Toyota/Ford's hybrid system uses a single-ratio planetary gearset and all the variation in "ratio" is achieved by changing the rotation speed or direction of two electric motors (reversing rotation changes one electric motor into a generator) which along with the internal combustion engine are connected to the three planetary gearset components.

These Hybrids, or PHEVs make perfect sense as a transition to BEVs or alternative as Fuel Cells. But first the Power Grid needs to be upgraded, preferable with Nuclear Reactors, and battery technology evolves to produce less toxic batteries, not requiring so much rare metals.

yeah it's 20 years too late for that. and LFP batteries already use no rare earths whatsoever. what does however use lots of rare earths is hardening steel for valve seals/conrods/crank as well as being required for refining oil into various fuels. SO the entire thing is just a red herring.
@RogerM88
@RogerM88 2 жыл бұрын
@@georgeionescu6425 you can't rid of fossil fuel powered grid without replacing it with a stable output source of power. Modern Nuclear Reactors are way safer, and they would provide less emissions and the power needed to support more BEVs on the grid. Also the aeronautic and naval industries need more efficient engines, not just the car industry.

Good test and interesting info. I'd want the absolute base model version of this with a trailer hitch. I don't need heated and cooled seats or lane departure warnings. I go back to the days when base model trucks had 3 speed manuals and vinyl seats. Any vehicle with air conditioning is all the luxury I need.
