yeah... for example in monster hunter rise (if I remember) you can skip cutscenes and there is an option to decrease/mute characters voices in gameplay

P3s narrative especially is imo fundamentally superior to 4 & 5s because character growth hasn't yet been sectioned off into social links - meaning each character has their own stuff going on during the main plot and isn't constantly trapped in some weird stasis. With qol upgrades, modernized gameplay and visuals this could easily be the best Persona (even though I doubt it will score higher than 5 tbh). The only point of contention left might be Tartarus, which is the main dungeon of the game, that is infamous for sometimes becoming a rather monotonous grindfest. According to the previews I've listened to though, they've touched it up quite a bit. Still, if you're worried about that, I'd definitely listen to one or two reviews first once the embargo has been lifted on Wednesday. (sorry for the wall of text btw)

@@TheLastDaysOfSorrow I love P3, but my biggest point of contention is still its S. Links. With the exception of a couple, like Sun, most of them just aren't very good compared to later entries, which is not an insignificant issue, considering how much of the game is spent doing S. Links. I'm hoping they do some revisions in Reload, but you'd have to completely rewrite some to make a character like Kenji tolerable. (Also forcing you into a relationship with every female S. Link is cringe, but I have to assume they'll at least address that.)

To be fair, RGG hasn't laid anyone off during this trend, and Yakuza games always had a big emphasis on money But to be double fair, Sega may *potentially* layoff some temp union workers in localization pretty soon according to some rumors But to be triple fair, that Persona 3 Reload trailer is the best commercial ever made

The idea that the layoffs in the industry are caused by “corporate greed” is bullshit. Gamers do t like talking about the ACTUAL reasons, which are often more to do with them. There was a game industry article last week with execs talking about how if last year was “the year of layoffs”, this year will be “the year of closures”. There are simply TOO MANY GAMES. Gamers want ever-bigger games and they want to spend ever-less money on them. A game isn’t”worth the money” unless you can play it for hundreds of hours of never-repeating content. The industry can support like 5 of those games and we have one coming out every week. For every game that hits, like Tekken 8, there is an expensive game that had to be written off as a failure just a week after shipping. And “make the games better” is a nonsensical suggestion because the entire premise of “hidden gems” is that gaming isn’t a meritocracy. Being good doesn’t mean you will be noticed or sell copies.

I think the reason the story is being emphasized is cause all these Tekken lore videos get a lot of traction and Harada saw how tekken 7 boring yet simple story helped a lot of people get invested

It's too big of an assumption to believe marketing is working as intended. Movie trailers, TV commercials, and even billboards are far less memorable than 15+ years ago. I understand if you think I might be nostalgic for old marketing...but I can just look at ads in ANY other country, currently, and be entertained or informed very very consistently .

There are basically three different types of Jokers that work. Cesar Romero (slapstick), Heath Ledger (serious), and Jack Nicholson/Mark Hamill (in the middle). Any other attempts of making a different type of Joker never works. Joker doesn't need insecurities.

After playing both games here is my general take on them. For starters both are niche genres and Japanese which makes them quite unappealing for many. Yakuza has been getting more and more English VOs so it’s a bit better but still we are talking about a 3D fighting game and a JRPG. Tekken 8 is a massive improvement on the series. The game offers a story recap, the story mode is rather long yet quite accessible in normal difficulty (unlike 7), the combat has casual/new user friendly options for combos, and there is a lot of offline content. So it’s a game for everyone. Yakuza 8 is technically Yakuza 9.5 since 0 and Gaiden exist. You need the knowledge of bare minimum of 8.5 games to fully get all the references. However, Yakuza games are like 95% self contained so even if you lack previous knowledge you will still be good, plus Yakuza 8 is based on the newer stuff so having played 7 and Gaiden might be enough for most references and maybe even 6 and Kiwami 2 just for a fuller perspective. Regardless, the game is accessible for everyone and has the best graphics and starting chapter in the series in my opinion, not to mention how good the combat feels despite being turn based. As for the trailers they can’t really showcase the story since that’s central to the game, while the mini games add like 30h (based on previous entries) to the gameplay without feeling out of place. Both are amazing games andI think that the marketing was justified. Not to mention how good Gaiden was despite being a marketing tool for Yakuza 8 in some aspects.

Like a dragon.. tekken 8... and this months Dragon's Dogma.. Persona 3... the focus in my op is clearly shifting from the USA to Europe and Asia and in fact I imagine - I don't have the numbers - the layoffs are mostly in the USA. The focus is shifting regionally but also form AAA to AA. This year I was surprised by Chinese games (lies of P... sword and fairy... Xuan Yuan 7...) .. Korean games... even an Italian one (Martha is dead rocks!). AAA production are getting worse, AA are getting better and US business is pretty much focused on AAA.
