Sega was never late to the party, they simply had too much legacy to compete with Sony, who didn’t have any legacy at all. Sega made decisions based on the way things had always been done, and Sony made a lot of decisions that were seemingly very stupid, but up paying off for them. For example, the Sony, PlayStation wasn’t actually any cheaper than the steak of Saturn. It’s just that the PlayStation took the memory card, controller, and game out of the box and sold them to you separately. This gave the illusion of being cheaper while actually selling you a consul box that doesn’t do anything until you spent an extra $150 to make it work. It was shrewd on Sony‘s part, but realistically Sega was simply doing what had always been done. But Saggus history is moved in this conversation, because that was 30 years ago and Sega is an entirely new company now.

@stefanswiss3760 Жыл бұрын
@@RakastanPorkkanakakkua they had inovation but like microsoft with its Zune they were terrible flops : Sega 32X and CD were inovations, they didn't know that 32X was a dead end because of the outdated megadrive with its few colors capacity but the CD could have been quite profitable selling compilations on CD would have been clever and cheap. megadrive also had "an Xbox pass" before it was a thing : games you download with your sega modem and that you don't possess, demos and extra content.(obviously very limited due to the tech capacity of the early 90's) They were probably 2 or 3 years too soon for internet too. When they went belly up, WoW hit the jackpot with monthly subscriptions for 20 years... it could have been PSO. But yeah, they aren't very good at knowing their strong points and how to promote those. Sometimes I feel they had success in spite of their management, by random

DEAD right about Sega not knowing their IP's worth. Story time: years ago, I worked for a company in the US that owned all the IP licensing rights to SEGA's game catalogue and their whole purpose was to go out to hollywood and get projects made. It FASCINATED me from day 1 that no one on that team knew anything about these games, or which ones to pursue. I was a week into the job and realized from their positioning and pitches that they couldn't differentiate relevance levels between Ristar, Comix Zone, and Sonic.
@ROJM-cc1gp Жыл бұрын
So you were with Stories LLC then. Funny. Things changed since then after the Sonic movie. They got buoyed after hollywood came knocking and brought the rights to three/four of their IPs including the one you just mentioned. So now they actively shopping IPs again but they realize that the games getting the deals are titles from the back catalogue and not the newer stuff like Persona which they want to get licensed to hollywood.

Literally just start building games into Yakuza world, add multiplayer so you walk around some worlds with other dudes, chuck a virtua fighter fight mode on top to beat up random people. You can already play old games in it. They already made an updated Virtua Fighter to add to Lost Judgement. It's not hard to imagine that instead of making a free game to add to a $60 game, they make a $60 game for a free game.

Comix Zone was a good idea if you were allowed to have more than a single life at the start. They did that to give the middle finger to rental outlets. I got into the game though and it's pretty fun. To me it's simply one of the best 2D platformers. I disagree about the level design, it's one of its biggest strengths. Which game has hidden rooms with teleporters that can send you to alternative levels, or even backwards? You never knew what to expect. 😵💫

@@timpize8733 I despise that the level layout is a complete maze. Also, AFAIK, the only way to actually fight the final boss and beat the game is to find the hidden teleporter in the first level.
