Got into soft pastels this summer and oh boy it’s the media for me! Growing up a gymnast I loveeee the feeling of dry chalk powder on my hands! Pastels are so expressive and vibrant! I devoted myself to watercolor for the past 3 years, I do love it so much, and tried almost every media, (love the feeling of putting oil pastel down but hate it on my skin!) Anyway, I can’t get over how much soft pastel feels right to me. I also splurged on that Paris collection this month and it’s unbelievable! I have Mount vision as my main set, nupastel as my hard ones, and Sennelier as my super super soft ❤️🥰 amd I got myself Terry ludwig darks 2 for my birthday, and they really are the most vibrant dark reds and purples… i wish they sold smaller sets, because I would love to have gotten just the bottom half of that set, I don’t think their dark blues and greens are as vibrant as Sennelier.

Looking forward to this!! In my Mom's stash I found several sets of Grumbacher Academy half stick pastels (from her school days in the 1940's), a set of Conte pastel pencils, a set of round Nu-Pastels labeled Eberhard and Faber, and an old set of Matisse oil pastels. The oil pastels were actually a gift to me that I didn't appreciate as a kid. Hadn't known Mom had kept them. I also have a smaller set of Faber-Castel half sticks that I got before I inherited the stash. And the landscape set of pan pastels. I got them as an impulse purchase. I had a set of metallic pan pastels that I got at a really fun craft discount store. They came with the tip sponges but no handles. Later, in the Blick store in Chicago (also a fun store, with chairs for non arty partners). I got a bunch of stuff but I wanted to go to specifically get the handles. On markdown were some specialty sets and assorted sponge and handles. I thought the landscape set looked like the sorts of colors I might use in large sections. I've been nervous about wasting them so I've never used them. Hopefully you and this pastel Sept can fix that.

@@hberbac838 I use the Dahle 133 sharpener, it even get's sharp points on my prisma's and is available for under 20 euro. If you have arthritis I would advise to use the table screw that comes with it. Saves from wobbeling annoying issues. Should work fine; if leds still break check if it is centered ok; if it is off centered it is likely to break faster. Best way to go then is old skool with a craft knife. Pastel pencils are known to break faster bc it's a soft led; trick is to have the right paper for pigment release; for budget artists I would advise canson mi teintes touch wich come with a neat white border; or canson xl for dry media lindsay mentioned; for higherend projects I would suggest pastelmat as it provides little dust residu wich makes it a good paper if you are sensitive for dust waste. I have seen some archival issues with other sanded paper, Lachri from Lachri fine art had a video on higher end paper video's. Disclaimer;; I don't know her source for that but her knowhow on papers and their issues is fantastic. I would take her advise over mine. Blind, lol.

@@hberbac838 Hey you're welcome; this is what works for me; stabilo pastel pencils are my advise if you just start; they're excellent for pastel pencils. You be you and remember most of us have been on this art journey for most of our adult life; please don't get yourself in debt bc of what we own wich is why I mostly post budget friendly supplies; exception on my end is paper; that can make or break your art. Art is to enjoy creating not to worry on over spending. Paper is the one thing I won't save on;but on intermediate level. For wc advise is start with cotton; easier to learn right way in then to reverse wrong learned habbit; trust me been there,lol. Fabriano artistico is good, arches and for practice I just use canson xl aquarelle. But if you are a beginner watercontroll is best learned on 100% cotton that way you know what to expect.

I picked up a "Playbox of Sweden" kids' art supplies box from Rusta the other day for about 70 NOK (which is about 7 USD/EUR). I'd gotten the same box a while ago already for the kiddo, but I really liked the oil pastels (and even the chalky but vibrant water colour pads), so now that I saw them in stock again I got one for myself too. ;) 24 colours that blend fairly well, and while I don't expect long-lasting lightfastness from them, I think it's a nice set to start off with. :) (Plus, it comes with the aforementioned water colours, small coloured pencils and felt tip water colour pens to keep your kid busy while you muck about with the oil pastels. ;)) So, for people in Nordic countries, that might be a nice and cheap option to explore oil pastels with. :) (My local Rusta only seems to have them around the end of summer, but Clas Ohlson sells them all year round, rebranded; at close to double the cost though, 130 NOK.)

Lindsay, a bit late to this party….this is a great tutorial for so many of us who have pastels (like me ✋) and who have not really used them that much, (like me. ✋)I love my oil pastels and I have a lot of the Nu Pastels...a big set that I got because my local art store was closing out their open stock because Prismacolor is no longer going to sell open stock, only sets, which is really sucks. But anyway you know I guess that there are what I call “boutique” pastels - hand-rolled soft pastels that are even more expensive than the high priced premium brands (and from this lady (✋me) who loves to buy art stuff…a totally useless extravagance IMHO.) I saw another KZbinr using some that she was given to try out. She swatched them out and of course they were lovely, so lovely, soft, velvety very blendable colors. But no one should think that bc art supplies are more expensive that these will somehow make them a better artist. While quality art supplies are important, we must know what really makes us better artists is regular working at our craft, taking classes or instruction as we can, being open to learning and just practice, practice, practice.
@Obsidian_Iris_2 жыл бұрын
Lindsey, thank you so much for doing these classes for us! It’s greatly appreciated! I look forward to the seeing what a beginner can do with them. I have two product questions; first, are the pan pastels a better quality or have a higher percentage of pigments than say the Faber Castell set you recommended we start off with? If so, is it a significantly greater amount? I ask because every card crafter seems to use them. I’ve wondered if it was simply because they’re popular with viewers (pretty to look at, different than the usual sticks) or because they were the best ones to use to color landscape scenes on cards. Also, do you have more brands of pastel pencils you recommend than the Derwent? I know they’re good but I was hoping there were other options that will maximize my chance of catching a good sale.
@thefrugalcrafter2 жыл бұрын
Yes, the panpastels are lightfast so the contain a higher quality pigments. I think the reason the are popular with cardmakers is because you apply them with a sponge applicator and you can do a lot of stamping techniques with them. As for pencils go for whatever us affordable. I don't notice a huge difference in quality between brands. Generals us a USA made brand that is very affordable.

Can you use colored pencil in place of pastel pencil/a harder pastel for sketching and final details? I'm _so so_ tempted by the sale on those super-soft sennelier half-sticks, even though I know it makes way more sense to start with a (way cheaper) medium-hardness pastel and move up. The want monster wants the big pretty set lol.
@thefrugalcrafter2 жыл бұрын
Sure if they will stick.

@@thefrugalcrafter If they don't stick, maybe the want monster will want a small set of pastel pencils. ;o)

So so excited for this!! I have Faber Castell and the Mungyo handmade soft pastels. I’d like to get something a bit softer…more buttery to go along with what I already have. But, I’m still a beginner so I don’t want to get something super expensive. Any thoughts? Blick? Paul Rubens?
@thefrugalcrafter2 жыл бұрын
Paul rubes ave very similar to Sennelier BUT if you are in USA the Sennelier soft pastels have been on great sales on amazon and it rotates between sets. A 40 set of Sennelier might be cheaper than the 36 Paul Rubens.

@@thefrugalcrafter thanks! I’ll take a look. I know they’ve had coupons going on the PR’s on Amazon as well. I finished the sunset lesson on your class last night! I sent a pic over Instagram…not sure if you could see it or not. The class was AMAZING! I never thought I could paint like that!! Thank you!!!!❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

I'm still 9n the fence about pastels. I have a set, but I'm a messy person in general, so this might make for a lot more mess! But I enjoy your videos regardless of topic. 💖

Is there a difference between soft pastels and chalk if so what? I can only think of pigments and wanting a fancy name to separate the artist from the old school teacher vibe. Also looking forward to seeing projects to try as I have some how ended up with a few sets from polymer clay dabbling.
@thefrugalcrafter2 жыл бұрын
They are similar but chalk is a died calcium carbonate and pastels are pigment, clay and just enough binder to hold them together. Student grade pastels fall in the middle, they make have a bit of chalk with the clay and pigments. The pastels are much softer and have more color payout than children's colored chalk. Hope that helps:)

Pastels are tricky for me. I do my arting in bed. I’ve found a tray helps, but it’s still a laundry increasing endeavour.
@thefrugalcrafter2 жыл бұрын
Hmmm maybe work small with pastel pencils as a solution? Or colored pencil on sandpaper?
@karenneill91092 жыл бұрын
@@thefrugalcrafter oh! The pastel pencils might help- at least that way it’s only on my hands and paper, not my fingers, too. If I’m thinking ahead, I lay out an over-cloth, but that requires more advanced planning than I am good at😉. I tried the pan pastels with the tools, but I’m allergic to latex- really, really allergic to latex, so they were a definite no-go! (I learned this the hard way…took me ages to figure out!).

I also do a lot of my art in bed and have found that keeping my protective cloth with my art supplies helps me to remember to use it.

Gosh, so funny Lindsay. I was just dusting mine off to use also. Maybe you will start a September pastel month! Ha, Question though. The paper.... I have always used sanded paper but it's so darn expensive and U-art had stopped making it. So I stopped using pastel. But I'm wondering how you're able to layer with this Caledon paper?
@thefrugalcrafter2 жыл бұрын
This paper is more like a pebbly texture. It layers pretty well but my best tube for a sanded paper is liquatex clear gesso. Try it if you have some. It's amazing! I put a coat on mat board scraps for a fabulous service for pastels, colored pencils and watercolor crayons.
@SharonCullenArt2 жыл бұрын
@@thefrugalcrafter I used to do that with gesso and I put a little pumice in it, but I could never get it as smooth as I wanted. I’ll try this with just gesso. Thanks.
