Limited runs should turn into made to orders. Once the initial run is done. Every 1000 or so orders come in, a new batch of models, book prints, etc get made and shipped out. Remove a large chunk of FOMO
@SomeQuackingDuck10 ай бұрын
I think this is how P-Bandai handled their limited runs (at least in the past, haven't bought a model kit in a while), there were still people buying to resell for inflated prices at a later date but it wasn't at the detriment of everyone else who genuinely wanted a kit for themselves. Hell, isn't this how miniature related kickstarters handle their orders? I'm sure GW can switch to doing it too.

Did some shopping at another shop opposite it for 15-20 mins. Dropped in to ask if they had the House of Artifice book in stock. Got told the dont stock any Necromunda products... I was the only potential customer to step inside for that period, in a busy shopping mall, during one of the biggest retail periods of the year. Why did they not have at least the core 2023 Necromunda book and some representation of the product? The core book was a new product, and the Apocrypha Necromunda book was an upcoming release. Its as though the prices are set by the writing team, the retail choices are made by the rules team, and the codexes are written by the accountants.

My fandom has been growing for the last several years, and I can definitely say that the Dark Angels are my favorite legion and chapter. You can imagine how ecstatic I was when I heard about the Lion: Son of the Forest novel release. I honestly never knew about any of the special hardcover books that the black library produced. Once I discovered that the Lion had one, I raced to the website to place an order. Suffice it to say, they were long since sold out. eBay was loaded with them, all at extremely marked up prices. This really rubbed me the wrong way since technically the book had not even been shipped yet. At the end of the day, it is just a thing. The add to the conversation on scalpers and corporate competence is that a bad reputation is an opportunity cost, meaning that people who would otherwise spend money when they can may instead choose something else because of corporate perception. This seems less important for companies like EA and Activision-Blizzard that have a fanbase of over a billion people, but even publicly traded companies will fire CEOs or replace board members when profits or growth rate is down. People just don't understand that most outrage spread on the internet is irrational, disorganized, lacks moral or legal basis, or focus on short-term issues (one could say that same about political parties but I digress). This leads to diffusion of issues and disaffected attitudes from those who would want to help out. Thus it is important to band together on select issues and speak out until they are reasonably addressed.

Lots of good thoughts and observations here, thanks for the video. The Siege of Terra “limited edition” books are a pure own goal from a product design perspective; what they should have done is made it a “deluxe edition” of say 5-10K copies with just 1,000 of those being signed by the author. A really easy fix and is also an upsell for GW (as opposed to standard hardback) as I’m sure more people would invest if they believed getting a full set was easy at retail. On miniatures GW know they have insufficient capacity. In the H1 Business Update, 24/25 CEO Kevin Rountree acknowledged this and stated they are exploring setting up another manufacturing location, Factory 4. Of course, they’ll need more warehouse space to hold the extra product this facility could provide.

Many years ago I worked in a fraud team for a now defunct online retailer. When we did these kind of deals we had methods to stop multiple purchases via different accounts. Now bots weren't a thing then, however, people would set up multiple accounts - use different cards - addresses but the system would flag these accounts to be manually verified if it found one or more matching details and we'd have to check what was being purchased - the similarity of each account and either approve/deny it. Thats a lot of work for a retailer but it was 14-15 years ago, I'd imagine the technology has improved somewhat and would less rely on a human manually verifying accounts. It would be a financial burden for GW but it would improve their image, especially around these large releases. Oh and just to add we never took payment until the item was in stock ready to be shipped out.

Limited releases need to end. There's no reason to make limited editions unless there's a genuine shortage of materials. There's no shortage of leather that can be bound to a book, anyone that wants one of these should be able to get them and that'd solve the scalper problem since good luck scalping a regularly sold product, instead of a "limited" edition. Just have it cost $90 instead of the normal $25 for a book price, and that'll limit the number of people that buy it, really. Then they get more money too, which is what corporations love the most.

If they were smart, they would do what One Page Rules is doing and embrace 3D Printing, but a step better. Turn GW stores into 3d printing shops where you can get your stuff made to order and pick up when ready. They can partner with Elegoo or another major brand and produce Warhammer themed "Manufactorums", and license the designs as "STCs". They could have special one offs you get only in store as well. Community designs could be absorbed by GW and sold in their official community marketplace, sharing commission with designers and allowing all the super chapter specific stuff to be made and aold at no cost to GW. The hobby would flourish like never before, and GW could cut out almost all logistics issues and earn everlasting goodwill and embrace what is coming. If they stay on their current path, they will be as relevant as VHS in the streaming era so to speak.

The Art of the Horus Heresy book I wanted sold out in about 20 minutes. Thankfully I found an FLGS who was getting some and I preordered it through them.
@xehl10 ай бұрын
For me the easiest solution for them is during the announcement of a new box, model, book etc is open a 2 week register your interest period. You put down a deposit (some % of the final cost) and then after that they have however many weeks / months to scale up or down their manufacturing estimates to meet demand so that when the preorder or release window comes around you can pickup your box by paying the final fee if you registered or run the current gauntlet for preorders. No undue costs or storage worries for them and likely fewer disappointed customers.
@inscrutablewut10 ай бұрын
Yeah that is what other industries commonly refer to as a "preorder." GW just sells a limited stock and call it a preorder. They are clowns. Its not pre-anything. If you sell out it wasn't a presale WAS IT GW? You just sold an existing number. If it were a presale theyd do exactly as you described. They do not. I hate them and their stupid faces so damn much.

As someone who collected the main books of the HH over a year or so( just about to finish reading End and the Death vol.1 and waiting on paperback vol.2 in May) you definitely have to order from other sources to get the whole series physically oftentimes needing to shell out some serious cash for the books that are out of print and hard to find , and while I had no preference for paperbacks or hardcovers, sometimes the only option was a hardcover of a book that was almost impossible to secure outside of insane EBay asking prices( the only fairly affordable copy of Angels of Caliban I could find living in CA for instance , had to be ordered from a small bookstore in Amsterdam, Old Earth was another pricey hard to find one). Definitely have always felt that the BLibrary needs to up their game as far as stock, especially for older products

Why don't they just produce enough to meet demand? I'd argue that it's barely piracy if you miss out on a GW limited release and then print the models/books you missed out on, since you aren't depriving them of sales.

I appreciate the video. I love 40k & would love to own the tabletop models for armies I want. However, not being able to own the army I want, is ridiculous. GW lost a potential customer. I imagine I would have spent thousands of dollars on this hobby but, I refuse to be taken advantage of. Everytime I consider investing in the hobby, everything I want is sold out or out of stock or et-cetra. It's 2024. It's plastic. Wtf. A hobby shouldn't be this hard to get into.
@karleenbergkotte235010 ай бұрын
It's why a lot of us 3d print now as well, you can actually get something that looks like the og model or so similar that everyone knows what it's supposed to be and costs a fraction of what GW charges to print it and you don't have to wait not knowing when/if things will ever come back .

I think the scalping and reselling circus is to a degree part of the entire business model. It worked in a similar way with the fashion brand "Supreme", where reselling was essential to drive hype and demand for the products, and thereby fueled the brand's success.

How do we know for certain that some of the scalpers definitely aren't GW agents? Many companies can and do outsource commercial operations and shenanigans to 3rd parties as part of a holistic market approach stratagem. That would be something GW could talk about in order to reassure their customers. However, that said, whether or not the scalpers are major shareholders, who must be obeyed, remains a private matter, and nobody else's business, mind you...

I agree 100% with this. I collect the things in the lore that I love and am interested in. This has happened with so much more than the books but, everything which is so frustrating. My option which i hate is to get the novels digitally which I hate (i already said that) but sometimes it's the only way to keep up with it all. I love physical books, but I so love Hard cover books. The queue system is indeed extremely irritating, but it’s better than nothing. I wholeheartedly believe in the concept of first come, first served, and though the way their queue works doesn’t do that, being random, I believe it’s better than nothing. The new site needs work though. I can’t sign in, which was an issue when I preordered the Deathwing box. Even after, I still can’t sign in. Annoyingly, I did say about a week ago they should have put a Captcha system in place in regards to TEATD.3, and in typical GW fashion, they do just that… in the wrong spot. Putting it in front is nice to weed out bots but I’ve never seen an online shop that doesn’t have a Captcha system for checkout, especially for high demand items. *And Hot Damn with the clickbait this time!*

@Morvox10 ай бұрын
Warhammer+ should just provide you with digital rules for game systems, that would immediately solve the main problem you pointed out with core rule books not being available. Locking rules behind a physical book of which there are limited number of is just incredibly short sighted for a company that trades globally

The sad part is people that love WH40k keep supporting GW. GW screws everyone and everyone gets mad and says " It better not happen again". People are queing up to get screwed over and over. Til the consumers make GW really feel the hurt with a general boycott, the beatings will continue.
@krel335810 ай бұрын
I have a similar mindset however I only collected limited editions of books I know that id like, I also like the additional art work in them. For example my first limited edition from the siege of terra was Echoes of Eternity and part of that was because I was in the past ordering my books from indigo and amazon so I had no idea that limited editions actually existed. Later on I ended up acquiring limited editions of Warhawk and Lost and the Damned because I enjoyed them immensely and would like to reread them at some point. I also loved Garro as a character as well.

So it seems the GW, in addition to adding the bot queue thing for the DW assault box, they have supposedly 'recovered; around 500 copies of the book from the scalpers, people with multiple orders have had every extra order above 1 cancelled. So whilst it has taken them a long long while they have at least seemingly started taking more action. Those books will supposedly go on re-sale at some point.

The scalping market is only perpetuated if it's indulged. The simple fact is people are stupid enough to buy the marked up prices. If you don't indulge it, there is no market, and prices drop or the practice stops as the scalpers lose their investment and sit on worthless stock indefinitely. This is not just a GW problem, it's a community problem.

I wouldn't say that limiting items people can buy is stopping scalpers. Having enough product available stops scalpers. That'd be better for the players, the fans and the company. Even just looking at their site has a queue. That says it all to me. I've long ago given up buying anything Games Workshop related. I just get what i want in another way since they've long proven they don't want my money.

Thanks, as always, Luetin for your levelheaded commentary. I think the point that 10ed and Indomitous were "successful" shows there's some degree of artificial scarcity that GW willfully creates. Why, I don't know unless they figure it costs too much and they sell everything they produce so they don't care.

I hate the fact that its cheaper and more affordable to get 3D printed models at a higher quality than directly from GW. @NeoIsrafil10 ай бұрын
If GW wanted to stop scalping in a few weeks ALL you'd need to do is set up a system that checks IP address, checks shipping address, and compares it to the number of purchases going there and purchases made from that address within a timeframe. Set a limit to the number of purchases of each of the limited items per person/delivery address, hell even limit it based on credit card number, and then enforce it via shop bot. It isn't hard to have your shop enforce limits, especially when you're a big company that can afford programmers and may have inhouse programmers. The reason they don't enforce limits is because scarcity artificially inflated prices, and it saves them from having to ever lower their prices to fair levels, gives them an easy way to pretend they can't do anything about it, etc. it's an easy, inbuilt control system, and they're gonna enjoy the benefits of it until we no longer support the behavior.

If I had any patience I’d scan rule books and let people download them as PDF. I mean if that’s what’s stopping people from getting into it sometimes why not make it available online to download for newbies. Eventually miniatures will be scanned and pirated for people to download and 3d print themselves outside of GW control or sight. Artificial scarcity is never a good long term strategy unless you don’t care about new people starting and half hearted people quitting and just finding cheap or easy ways to do the thing they can’t do legitimately

@Mordikay21110 ай бұрын
I know this is a complex problem but I feel it's atleast a little similar to the recent Ubisoft drama with owning games. If a company structures their product so you can't optain it legally they have to be okay with you pirating. If GW makes it so I can't buy their models then they have to be okay with me asking my friend with a 3D printer to hook me up. This is of course a bit more complex with books and other stuff and while I hate not having a hard copy I'll admit to if I haven't been able to buy a book I've pirated audiobook version of it.
