There is a context that changes the meaning: "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you as if you had the mind of Christ". Fr William Lynch sj in his landmark book "Images of Hope" makes a clear case imagination is key in the healing of the soul. Without doing the work of imagining from the point of Christ, nothing changes as we do do to others what we would have them do to us so we can maintain the status quo. Christ was never nice as that is being dishonest. He demonstrated the greatest power we humans have is to chose to be legitimately kind in even the worst of circumstances.

Of all of Jordan Peterson's talks, this one is my favorite because it strikes at the core of what it means to be a true Christian. The Golden Rule, as he says, is not just encouraging us to "be nice." It instructs us to do much more than that. If we can conceive of how we would treat ourselves in such a way as to make our lives great, then we are to go out and do it for everyone around us as far as our resources and reach allows. His interpretation of this verse in the Bible is revolutionary. However, I also believe that it embodies the very core of Jesus Christ's teachings.

The thing about Christ's view of humanity is that he doesn't start with trying to boost our self-confidence and giving us a little sweet syrup like that's what will make us better. Instead, he's like a physician who comes in and gives you a terrible diagnosis. You have a fatal condition. You're broken. And our acceptance of the truth of that is the first stage to recovery. We have to consent to the operation, painful, messy, and as prolonged as it is going to be. The next part after consenting to the diagnosis he likens to Birth - it's bloody, and messy, and we're going to come out of it crying and screaming. But then the part after that is he says, "And you will be my child. I will bestow value on you, not because of your worth but because of mine. I will raise you up like you would raise up your heir." Then, you feel much better. But until that acceptance of how bad it is; that it is so bad that the only solution involved someone getting nailed to a tree and dying, and that you need a life transforming surgery happens - you can never get to the other part. You can only drug yourself and get distracted from the problem until it kills you.

Treat others as you would be treated is the core principle of libertarianism as well. It goes something like this. One, treat anyone new as best as you can. Two, if they reciprocate, you have a good relationship with them. Three, if they treat you poorly, then treat them poorly (poorly being an initiation of force against you). If you do not do this, then you are essentially entering into a co-dependent relationship with them where they are the dom and you are the sub.

Loving your neighbor as yourself means identifying with them as Christ identified with us by literally having our condemnation imputed to Him on the cross so that we could have His righteousness imputed to us. THAT is loving your neighbor as yourself: God practicing what He preaches. And that is the New Covenant represented by the bread broken and the cup drained. His body broken and His blood shed for us. This is the Gospel that is proclaimed from Genesis to Revelation. So when He says that you are of more value than many sparrows, and value is determined by what Someone is willing to pay for something, He is making quite the understatement, don’t you think? In that light, it behooves you to remember that what He paid for you is also what He paid for your neighbor, got it? That is the standard that He measures love by.

There is no existantialism in relativity mode of being. One farmers prays saying its a draught and thus is rained while for someone else it fell on their head getting them wet as they were walking the streets with no umbrella. You cant say its full proof maintainance because that will strip away even whatever that already resides as hope of some sort. There is no defining boundary of good events or bad events, things happen and the way we are supposed to take it and make out of it is really the key. However, if its self inserted fabricated one. Trouble shall enter with you alongside. Belief is like walking on a road in some random hope there might be a wanted pebble and normally, it leads you astray. Clarity is to walk through the road knowing there is no other path if the wanted pebble is to reside somewhere, it shall be this way. Its that need for constant updates which pave the ways. The fear of falling renders you no choice but to be consistent and active in the process. For the process is the product and product undergoes the process as how the milk becomes butter and then ghee

"The Krabby Patty secret formula is the recipe for the highly popular Krabby Pattyburger sold by the famous Bikini Bottomrestaurant the Krusty Krab. There are many variations of the Krabby Patty but all have one secret ingredient, which is yet to be identified or revealed. Throughout the series, Plankton commonly tries to steal the formula in order to improve the popularity of the Chum Bucket but he fails every single time." The Golden Rule is the secret krabby patty recipe that everyone is trying to figure out. My best guess as I am unfamiliar with Spongebob lore.

Yeah, people forget Jesus was a pious Jew. Jesus' great commandment (“You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. On these two commandments depend all the Law and the Prophets.”) are taken directly from two of the best known OT verses (Deuteronomy 6:4-5 and Leviticus 19:18).

If you can't take it literally and have to interpret the wisdom into it or the problems out of it, it's not wise. The golden rule only works to the extent people want the same things and know what each other want, which almost never happens. It is a bad rule because it is so broadly understood the wrong way that many many people are making bad decisions because it's said to be good and they don't have the capacity to understand otherwise.
@ailius15203 жыл бұрын
I think the problem with the Golden Rule is it's taken out of context. The context was a biblical passage, where Jesus said all of God's laws could be summed up as "love thy neighbor as thyself". Then a man from the crowd asked "And who is my neighbor?" Jesus answered with the parable of the Good Samaritan. What Jesus did *not* say is "everybody is your neighbor, be nice to everybody" - and that would've been a much easier answer. The morale of the parable of the Good Samaritan is "your neighbor is the one who does things which benefit you". Taken in context, the Golden Rule is a statement that morality can be approximated by simple tribalism, if you have good in-group/out-group standards and aren't just defining your in-group by race, family, or wealth connections.

JP blew it on this one, a rare mistake by him. This is a mistake common to man, which is, you read that which you are most profoundly affected by into things that are not saying that at all. The golden rule is short, and straight forward. Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. don't do to others, what you would not want people to do to you. a hard pill to swallow, when people mistreat us, but God also says vengeance is MINE I will repay. What happens when you wait for this vengeance? your enemies might think you weak but usually not. You are not refusing to defend yourself, you are refusing to return evil for evil. If you wait and watch, God will avenge you on your enemies in such a way that they suffer misery, but also do not learn from their mistakes, how much worse this vengeance is, than any we could enact. and also more just, to those who have wronged you without a cause.
@komreed5 жыл бұрын
There are people who are so warped that they will do evil if they put this law into action, in a manner of speaking, but for the vast majority of people who haven’t become utterly corrupt and self destructive it’s an effective all encompassing principle. This principle was not given to all people, but to those who wanted to serve God and be righteous. Sado-Masochists are hardly in that camp, and there are other issues they should be trying to iron out before they think they can fulfill the law and the prophets by obeying the royal law.

for once I have some reservations about what he is saying: the prophets _restore_ the law they don't "update" it - even Jesus (especially Jesus) said he was not come to destroy the law and the prophets but to fulfill them (you can consider the New Testament an 'update' in the sense that ordinances and customs were changed - there is no longer a need for animal sacrifice or the burden of a paid priesthood and the Temple was an idea of the monarchy - both tolerated but never mandated: there is no divine right of kings)

‘Treat yourself as if you have value, then extend that courtesy to everyone else’ isn’t it at all. The previous few verses are about asking and receiving. You could say they’re about the fair use and dispensing of resources and energies. Therefore, the golden rule is really a call to not be self-centred, but to think of others in your daily actives. If you have a resource, could you help someone else get some benefit from it?

"do unto others as you would have them do unto you" I think is the verse he's referring to but if I'm wrong let me know. My thoughts on this is going to contradict what many of you believe, especially if you are a die hard fan of Jordan Peterson's. You should only be good to people who are willing to maintain a healthy balanced relationship. Many people are not. You have to learn how to recognize this early in life and early in relationships. This is one of the many verses of the bible which make you a perfect slave. The main reason I no longer believe in any type of god or follow any religion. Yes the stories teach moral values and ethics but it only applies if everyone follows the same rules and lives by the same morals and ethics. It's obvious that we don't, so you have to decide - are you going to be the hunter or the prey? It's a dog eat dog world. Forget about god and all of that nonsense.
@noredbull15 жыл бұрын
Jake Miller I agree. Always try to be good to others, but make sure, that they are not using you disproportionally for their own advantage. Because this will make you feel angry and sad. But you are not contradicting Jordan Peterson’s ideas. There is narrow path of balance. Just be brave to say no sometimes, and give something to other, in order to get something for yourself.

You are right about the importance of that principle and to project your self deeply into its consideration. But you are wrong that religion is not trying to simplify it. Even without the studied intellectual guidance, the kids are going to go through this stuff, just not so many, not so early, and not for as long. "It's nice to be nice." was about the state of play for my generation. Once you have identified that it is nice to be nice, and philosophised about it until it is a booklet rather than a catch phrase, you have to fold it back up and prepare it for injection into the brains of others in a form that will stick. Today it is nice to be nice because we get to do so much that we have to focus on just being. Yesterday it was do unto others because that was how the world worked in yesterdays world. We should not murder religion. We must replace it or face the void.

The psychological interpretation of blame assignment (nobody, self, others) is the largest facets of a person's life, to apply proper circumstance for the interpretation of Scripture Wisdom that coincides with the interpretation of The Law... Because it reasonably asks that those with the power over people - to know the people well enough - to govern them safely enough. The "Golden Rule" stated here is referring to how things are IS how one must precede as a part of society, and the wisdom offered is: Lead the exemplary societal life you can lead by example and lead by the example in holding the expectation, of that, being the only acceptable behavior in society
@momentary_4 жыл бұрын
Is there more than one "golden rule"? I always thought the golden rule was "do unto others as you would have them do unto you". It was never "be nice to others" nor "conceptualize how things could be great for yourself and help others achieve it too". I've never heard that first one and the second sounds way too complex to be a simple rule to follow.

@momentary_4 жыл бұрын
@@meganding7812 Yeah, but treating them nicely isn't really the most important part of the rule. Thinking about how they would feel about how you treat them is the most important part. The empathy part is more important than the 'being nice' part. The rule tells you to put yourself in their shoes. That's what makes it golden.

@@meganding7812 Doesn't matter if that's how people read it, being nice isn't the important aspect of the rule. Imagining what it's like to be the other person is the important part. You don't even have to tell someone to be nice if you can get them to imagine what it's like to be the other person.
@momentary_4 жыл бұрын
@@meganding7812 Peterson isn't saying to imagine what it's like to be the other person if that's what you're inferring. He's saying that the golden rule that everyone knows is wrong and that his interpretation is the correct one. He's saying that it's not about imaging what it's like to be the other person. It's about getting others to have the good life that you want to have. While this too is a good thing, it's way too complex of an idea to practice easily. I believe the normal interpretation is much more practical and easy to put into effect.
