Focusing on promoting health globally, Derek Yach describes how a shift in attitude to disease is needed by rethinking our approach to disease prevention. Yach states that we must redefine the unacceptable, define what is possible to prevent and that inaction is unacceptable. The healthy choice should become the easy choice.
Dr. Derek Yach is Chief Health Officer at Vitality Group, an organization dedicated to health promotion that is part of Discovery Holdings Ltd.
Prior to that, he was Senior Vice President of Global Health and Agriculture Policy at PepsiCo. He has headed the global health department at the Rockefeller Foundation and has been a Professor of Global Health at Yale University. He is a former Executive Director for Noncommunicable Diseases and Mental Health at the World Health Organization (WHO).
Derek established the Centre for Epidemiological Research at the South African Medical Research Council. He has authored or co-authored over 250 articles covering the breadth of global health and is regularly cited by The Huffington Post, The New York Times and The Economist.
Derek has served on several advisory boards including those of the Clinton Global Initiative, the World Economic Forum, the Wellcome Trust and Cornerstone Capital.

Excellent talk and message. I preach this to my nurse practioner students continually. The healthcare system is talking the talk in the US but not walking the walk of prevention. The practice of diagnosing and treatment far exceeds that have prevention.

Great talk. Agreed. The whole business of health has been 'pharmaceuticalized' and more money goes into treatment than prevention. Public health has done more to save lives but received less credit.

An excellent overview of some simple ideas that could easily lead to exceptional breakthroughs in global health. The barriers to achieving those breakthroughs are not lack of knowledge, technology or money. Rather, they are merely conceptual, and thus within our grasp.

So Ted, what can we do to inspire D.C. and the American people to make a change? And at what price? And how to pay for it?

More money should be allocated for prevention of diseases than is done for treatment

I have both Social Security Medicare, AND a separate co-pay insurance supplement that I pay out of my own pocket. But when I went to go in for a routine physical prior to my upcoming surgery, THEY REFUSED TO PAY FOR EVEN ONE PENNY OF IT. Wait a minute... they'll pay $50,000. for a surgical procedure, but not the $200. it costs for a goddamned ANNUAL PHYSICAL?? I once thought that preventative care was a good idea, just like going in for an annual dental checkup. When I missed mine a few years a while back, I got a abscessed tooth, the dentist had to pull my largest molar, and it will cost me SIX THOUSAND DOLLARS TO GET ONE DENTAL IMPLANT TO REPLACE IT. Try coming up with that kind of cash when you're 71 and retired!!! In the entire world of health care and medical insurance, WHY ISN'T THERE AFFORDABLE INSURANCE FOR DECENT DENTAL CARE??? I suppose that Uncle Sam just doesn't believe that having healthy teeth is good idea.

I disagree with his comments about companies not reporting on the health of their employees. Most mining and oil companies have health and safety and the statistics for the company on page 1 of the annual report.
