For anyone interested - I purchased this transmission some months ago from MB Spares in Canberra, Australia. They were or still are clearing all their parts out as they transition to a service only business. I think the owner wants to partially or fully retire. They didn’t know who I was other than some random jerk on eBay asking too many questions - but I am extremely happy with my purchase. I think he even went ahead and installed output shaft seal as the one in the picture when it was for sale was cracked. Probably in case I was to just fit it and use it as is. That was never going to be the case anyway, but for a seller to actually care about the end result of a sold item AFTER the transaction is completed? Impressive. He is however a man of few words, I wish I could know more about the history of this trans but i wont push it.

That may be a factory remanufactured transmission. If so, there should be a metal tag on the left side near the bell housing.

Thx David, for your detailed videos. I wonder if I could get away with just replacing the friction plates. I take it the various seals should be replaced just to ensure a good seal all around. Cheers

absolutely if its an original transmission the whole master rebuild kit should be fit. The seals will all be baked hard and shrunken now. Only exception being if its low mileage- with my blue black car i only replaced reverse frictions and the seals disturbed to get to that area. All other frictions looked good so i left them alone. That transmission is mint.

Looks pretty much exactly like my .313 with 109K miles that was owned by an old lady. Only difference is that a couple of the reverse frictions were flaking material away, but original MB logos were still present.

Not sure you'll see this question but hopefully! You've done some great work on your 124's and the series on the transmissions is really helpful. I actually have a porsche 928 auto, which you may know uses a variation of the Benz 722's, essentially 99% of the internals are the same but fitted inside a modified casing. Mine is a 1983 four speed, it's leaking from the front pump which I'm about to do with the help of your video. However the only actually driving issue is a harsh change just from 3rd into 4th. (4th to 3rd is fine) every other change works smoothly, there is no slipping. It also seems more noticable when the box warms up. It's previously had fluid and filter changed with no effect, the old fluid was clean with no worrying particles. I'm reluctant to tear down the whole box as you have done if I can avoid it. I do have a invoice showing the box was rebuilt maybe 30,000km's previously. Thanks in advance for anything you might suggest.

If you had to change thw gearbox, you could have made a swapt for a manual. It gives a lot of life to the engine. My 2.3 manual is as fast as the 3.0 automatic.

Is the front pump supposed to be touched during a rebuild??
@MMWA-DAVE2 жыл бұрын
it should be at least cleaned out and new seals fitted. There is a bearing shell the torque converter rides on too, this is easy to replace with the press.
@MMWA-DAVE2 жыл бұрын
Forgot to mention, if the transmission has ever run dry the pump might be destroyed, its always good to check its condition, if damage has occurred to the finely machined surfaces the gear pump runs on. If so, replace the whole thing.

@@MMWA-DAVE Thanks for that, I just had a 722.4 rebuilt and now the guys telling me now that the pump has stuffed up, it has nothing to do with the rebuild. I think I'm paying for him to learn. But you speak common sense. Thanks again Cheers 🥂

@@manuelstarr3602 is it overall low fluid presure or is there something wrong with reverse ?

@@MMWA-DAVE No, the car refused to find a forward gear.. so this guy pulled it down for inspection. I'm a foreigner in the Philippines and this guys taking me for a ride (without the car). He sent me pics of broken metal and springs etc. and told me the front pump was buggered. I just paid him to rebuild about 200 klms ago. Oh well. Thanks mate.. take care.
