Some advice for snow days in the mountains. 1. Don't use water after 5PM from the sink or pipes. If you have to then leave the water on afterward. 2. Have a reserve of water and firewood stored up for emergencies. 3. Park where you will always be able to get out during heavy snow days. 4. Snow pile-ups cause a lot of roof damage to old cabins. Find something to keep the snow to a minimum. They make roof snow scrapers. 5. Insulate the pipes with pipe insulation. 6. Always put the male stovepipe down into the female pipe to prevent creosote from dripping down from around the edges and falling on the floor. 7. Frequently clean rusty old stovepipes with a wire bristle brush to also prevent creosote from forming in the pipes.

Have you tried using steel wool in the holes they come through and using glue to seal up the hole? Also, insects and mice don't like the smell of peppermint. So, you don't have to have mice as a room mate. Out peppermint oil and water in a spray bottle and spray it all over the house, in cracks and behind furniture. Have your porch sealed up too. I see those gaps! That's where their getting in, right? So apart with peppermint oil and use that spray stuff, that you see on tv, when the ad keeps water from coming into a boat. But their is calling you and spray to fill those gaps, then cover it over with sheet rock and paint it. You did an awesome job fixing up the cabin.

Regarding the anxiety thing, usually, when I feel like that I take a 30 min to an hour break to step away from the problem. When I feel calmer, I sit down and write a list of all the things I need to do out on paper. It helps to put things into a better perspective for me. Like maybe I had 20 things to do, but they're all small things that won't take much time. Or maybe I had 10 big things and like yeah I had a valid reason to be stressed. But regardless of how big or small my tasks were, seeing them all laid out in front of me helps to plan when I can do them and prevent them from flinging themselves across my mind at moch speed every minute of every day and causing me anxiety.

Use hot water bottles in your bed .Make sure you have hardwood it burns hotter and some hotter than others.Maybe look into antique soap stone bed warmer? Keep a large pot of water going on the stove it will make it feel warmer and you will always have wash water. Melted snow is a good way to do this .

A couple tricks from growing up in Duluth...Put some smaller rocks by your wood stove, after they are hot wrap them up & put them under the covers at the foot of your bed at night....also, Always, always, always keep all of your faucets open to at least a slow drip in the winter; this will keep your pipes from freezing.I hope your water pipes don't burst while your gone.
@judiehavard49033 жыл бұрын
You have a let a slow small stream of water run all night when it gets down to 36 degrees and lower. To keep pipes from freezing. And you can put a large pot of water on your wood stove. It will help keep the cabin warmer. And use stove/ oven heat. To to add to wood stove heat.

Try a soapstone stove. They're expensive, but they retain heat a lot longer. Look for a wood stove that burns 24" logs. The longer the wood, the longer it burns. In the dead of winter, we load our stove every 4 hours, such as 12am - 4am - 8am - 12pm - 4pm - 8pm. Once you get the hang of it, it's not that inconvenient. During the winter, the upstairs is 72 degrees and the downstairs is 68 degrees. Indoor thermometers also help you to know when you need to load the stove. During the winter, we spend more time upstairs, because the floor is heated. Our home is 2000 square feet. We only have the wood stove for heat.

My house is 130 year old farmhouse...we used to have a soapstone stove...I highly do not recommend them...they take FOREVER to get hot at all...they have no blower, so most of your head just goes up or out of the flew...we were lucky to keep it 55 degrees in the house, and that was with space heaters going along with the stove....get a wood furnace with a blower!

When I get anxiety and start feeling stressed, I make a list of all the things I need/want to get done. Then I put them in order of priority so I know what needs to get done first. Sometimes I don't make it through the whole list that day, but I can at least rest knowing I have a plan, and that the most important things got done. Hope that helps 😊

Hi Hannah 🌻 You do great work . I need to clean up my place . My mom and me have a place together and my mom passed from lug cancer in 2016 and I can't find my organizing skills . I think it's because I miss my mom . It's nice to see you doing things with a look of ambition in your eyes . I know two women that are retired now . They have been in wheelchairs with disabilities all of their life and have done the best for themselves and everyone around them . Watching you work on your place and do the things you can do as a woman is a great new thing for me to see . I never seen a girl work as smart as you can physically. After me being around woman with a disability has made me forget just how strong a girl can be that is able body . I'm happy to watch you do easily what people with disabilities struggle with . I hope your grateful for that. I'm reminded of what I shouldn't be taking for granted my abilities from my friends with disabilities everyday of my life by their friendship. Joey ⚓ Hannah 🌻

Reading this from my 40 degree ambient temperature room, cozy under the heated throw blanket. Didn’t even opt for the larger heated blanket (I like to stick my feet out of the blanket into the cool sometimes.) Its also less expensive but does the trick. Cost $40 and minimal to run. @willsofer36794 жыл бұрын
I agree that it's not ideal, but eh, wood stoves are hella expensive. You can get second-hand ones (as most are, obviously) much cheaper sometimes, but one in good condition at a good price can be hard to come by. It's even more difficult if you want one that can cook decently, like myself, and isn't primarily for heating. That being said, I do agree she should look for alternatives. Honestly, this wood stove would be *ideal* for something like a workshop (something that gets occasional use but isn't in the home), so she shouldn't just chuck it. Hold on to it, but look for something better in her price range. The big issue with buying wood stoves (that aren't new or specialty refurbished) is that they ACTUALLY are widely available, in a multitude of varieties. Finding out about their sale in the first place is hard enough, but it's mainly geography and how spread out the owners are. You might find the perfect one, but it's a state away. And the cost of shipping something like that is overly prohibitive. So you have to either look local, or make an investment of time and money to go get it.

Put a little electric space heater beside you at night. They are great!
@humanityandconflicts4 жыл бұрын
I second getting rid of that death contraption "wood stove". With the damper it can become a carbon monoxide danger, causing anxiety, brain damage and possible death. Also, uneven heating cause condensation to form and mold to grow, causing depression and illness if not carefully monitored. Living in a cabin all alone is difficult, but not impossible with good stuff that works well. Using wood as heating during winter requires lots of wood chopping. A wood chopping machine is advised. And get a cat for getting rid of the mice.
@drx1xym1543 жыл бұрын

Sorry to hear about you having to leave your cabin. I was excited when I saw that you were going out to stay in it. I designed a new cabin to replace one that burned down in a forest fire. 12'x16' with 3 windows and a solid door. Insulated loft 2x6" walls and R-30 in the top rafters. Vermont Castings Resolute Acclaim heats it to 20 below no problem. It gets so warm I have to sleep on the floor with a window cracked. It can be done... The Russians called it "winter quarters"... You can do it!

You should put straw hat bales around the perimeter of your house. Also if you spray insulation in your roof your home will stay 30% warmer
