At 65 and a grandma, I make non-traditional wedding dresses. Ive made about a dozen and sell them in a booth. Like you i can't get enough of it. I make everything but all white or long and white. Around here there are plenty of galas and new years eve parties for those type of dresses. Chopping off a train is pure excitement i hear in your voice. My mom made my first communion dress out of her train. I wish you health, wealth, and happiness for your new life. 💍

Big recommendations on a tie back for the dress - helps ensure it will fit, no matter what your body is up to, and you can eat all your tasty wedding food. Also, big ups to bustles to have your train and dancing dress too!

CONGRATS CARLY! This is such good news! I made my own wedding dress, and I liked how it turned in the end, but I did feel a bit of pressure to get it perfect. My advice to you would be to have fun and not obsess about making THE PERFECT DRESS, because in a way it will never be, since not all the amazing ideas can make it into one dress. About the train/t-length dilemma, you could always make the entire dress t-length, and on top add either an overskirt with the train or a removable train, kind of like a cape you can remove for the reception. I personally prefer the same dress for both events, but it can be easily modified to make it more comfortable to dance and jump around in the reception. CONGRATS AGAIN! So looking forward to this series!

I have to STRESS, consider using tie for the dress, not zipping. My dress was tied and it was the best decision ever. You never know how your body changes. I kept my dress, we actually had a kinda wedding renewal two years later. Never would I have ever still fit in a zipped dress, but we could cheat me in my old dress. I gained a lot of weight though, so 😂 Congratulations, enjoy the fiancée time, it will go away way too fast!

Congratulations, that’s amazing! I am currently making my own wedding dress, and my only advice is -if you are making your own corset pattern, give it a LOT of mock-ups and if you have time, make the whole thing (including closures and finishes) before cutting your dress fabric. Duck canvas is a cheap alternative to coutil for mock-ups. My dress will have an inner corset (laced with grommets) and a satin outer corset layer with invisible zip and satin buttons. After trying on my first few drafts, I realized I didn’t like the neckline, shaping at the ribs, needed more ease in my upper back, needed to pay more careful attention to grain line, etc! Overbust corsets are challenging, so plan for it to take a good chunk of your time. Frida Lepold’s videos have been a big help. Good luck! ❤

Also, for the train/tea length dilemma, you could consider a cape? Like a robe? So you can have a sleeveless bodice/corset underneath and then a whimsical organza/chiffon/tulle layer on top, maybe with your signature puffed sleeves? 👀✨

How cool! Congrats and the perfect start to a life long relationship - marrying your best friend! A few thoughts . . . Have you considered: *Removable over skirt: light weight fabric breaking across the front of tea length dress - front is same length as dress extending to train length at back. Lots of room for sparkles and decoration and you don’t have to sit on it (or cut it off dress after)🙂. *Ballet costumes: can you search out designs for the longer ballet costumes? My mind kept going to those as you spoke. Going blank on specific characters for reference. Edit: Ah! Maybe a longer version of Degas’ Dancer statue? Has the neckline, corset, etc! *Strong recommend on separate skirt and bodice! *Based on you usual style I would have imagined a patchwork skirt of light weight (tulle, chiffon, silk dupioni, silk chiffon, etc) then finished with sequins, beads, metallic/high shine fibers in a “crazy quilt” style. So excited for this series - thank you for sharing this with us! Recs: the usual . . . Bernadette Banner, Abby Cox (several recent-ish corset and bodice projects), then follow the links and recommendations. I think almost every YT sewist had a corset/boning video 2(?) yrs ago during Corset-gate. 😂

Hi Carly, Congratulations on your engagement! I made my own wedding dress last year to get married at the Brisbane registry and I am very proud of it! I used the Daria Rose Cafe bustier for the top and the McCalls M7718 for the skirt (one version has a slight train too). I shortened my skirt and did a tea length dress, and I dyed my own tencel fabric in a pale yellow and loved wearing colour! Both of these patterns were perfect for what i wanted and sound like they could work for you also! The Rose Cafe bustier fits so well as you can choose both the bodice and bust sizes separately. The M7718 skirt is actually quite full and the pattern pictures don't really show it well. Hopefully this might help! Also don't forget to add pockets, wedding dress pockets are the best!!

OH, I HIGHLY suggest a cathedral length veil - the longer the better 😍 It’s that classic, traditional nod that helps ground more non-traditional vibes… and it’s pretty 😂❤ You get to wear this beautiful wedding dress once in your life, so I suggest wearing in your reception - people are going to want to see it!
