Great to see you and some of the family, Paul! I finally got a minute to see what you’ve been up to. I got so disgusted with electronics that I got rid of my ‘07 Silverado and bought a 1993 Ram W250 with a Cummins & a 5-speed.😂 The Silverado had an intermittent communication issue, similar to what you had going on here with that turbo sensor. Been going on for over 15 years. I am just done with all of it. I like simplicity. I learned a TON from you, but I just couldn’t get over my own mental hurdles with the electronic stuff. I still appreciate you sharing your knowledge with all of us! Kept me going for a few years longer than I would have otherwise. Onward we go! 😊 You and the family have yourselves a Happy New Year.🍻

I definitely know the feeling of faults taking a long time to really manifest themselves. I remember having a 93 GMC Sierra once that had a battery drain that took me 2 years to find out what was going on with it. Checked it 3-4 times and the drain was never there. Then finally after 2 years, it did it while I had the meter hooked up to it, and was able to trace it down then.

Hey Paul, love your videos, I have a real doozy of a problem on a customer’s car that I can’t figure out, I could really use your diagnostic insight, thanks Andy
@andrewseyfarth
@andrewseyfarth 4 ай бұрын
So I’ve got a doozy, 2018 colorado 3.6, we did a used engine swap and it has turned into a disaster. 23k on engine and used the original wiring harness from the original engine, the fuel rails, injectors and injector harness and high pressure sensor are all from the salvage engine. After the first test drive we got a p163a with no CEL, we have had these codes also but not consistently, p0090, p00c8 and p228c, those codes only occurred once at different times the p228c occurred by itself with no other codes and put me in reduced power, the p0090, p00c8 and p163a all occurred together and gave me reduced power at one point also but it seems the only codes that returns with consistency is the p163a but does not trigger a reduced power situation, the vin is-1GCGSCEN5J1118135, we’ve changed the high pressure fuel pump with a GM unit, called identifix and went through the diagnostics and replace the ECM, no good, then identifix suggested I run a new circuit straight from the ecm to the high pressure fuel pump, I used new pins on the x3 ecm connector and new 2 pin connector at the hpfp regulator and after about 60 miles the code come back, occasionally I’ll get a p228c with reduced power and the p163a, I’ve watched fuel pressure while driving and low is always between 50 and 60 and high is always over 550psi, freeze frame showed rail pressure at 61 psi when the light flagged, but there was no drivability change. The p163a always returns and the p228c occasionally flags and puts me in reduced power. I’m truly at a loss now it is very strange. We replaced the engine and trans because the head was leaking coolant and it had 190k on it and we found a salvage combination with 23k, thought it was a better solution, boy was I wrong…
@andrewseyfarth
@andrewseyfarth 4 ай бұрын
Also this p163a code as per definition and strategy is very vague and the diagram simply shows 2 wires from high pressure regulator to the ecm, strategy doesn’t explain how the ecm is recognizing the fault all it says it that it’s a circuitry control code
@ScannerDanner
@ScannerDanner 4 ай бұрын
What would be helpful is to define all of these codes. That way people don't have to go look them up before being able to offer help.
@andrewseyfarth
@andrewseyfarth 4 ай бұрын
Sorry about that, the codes that keep returning are P163A Code - Control Module Fuel Pressure Regulator 1 Control System Circuitry Performance P228C Code - Fuel Pressure Regulator Control Performance Low Pressure The p163a returns consistently after two trips and the p228c has returned 3 times on different trips over about 150 miles and put me in reduced power mode These 2 codes did also occur one time as well but have not come back since: P00C8 Code - Fuel Pressure Regulator High Control Circuit P0090 Code - Fuel Pressure Regulator Control Circuit

I believe that statistic is around 70%. So you would be wrong roughly 30% of the time. That is if you are relying on professional experience. Internet sourced fixes drop that number down greatly. Someone that specializes in one brand or type of vehicle will see pattern failures but that should only be used to point you in the direction to start testing. Otherwise you run into the risk of being wrong 30% of the time. I see this every day as a shop owner.
@tomtke7351
@tomtke7351 4 ай бұрын
@@freeride202 I'm not suggesting the 'part-store's-scanner" approach of code => part R&R. I'm only suggesting there's times when part R&R is appropriate as a troubleshooting step. My suggestion is (and only with a seasoned tech's good judgement) a $50 part R&R might be better than $500 of troubleshooting. When Thomas Edison was chided: "have you invented a lightbulb yet," would reply, "No! but I know a 100 ways that Don't Work!" I.E., a failed part R&R narrows the field. P.S. thx for being a business owner! You're invaluable to society. You provide a service and you employ workers... a double win.

The key with all of this is proper communication with the customer. If the new sensor does not fix it, the customer must be made aware of the next path moving forward and that is one where the shop is NOT working for free! Also the part that was suggested is also NOT being refunded. The layperson doesn't understand what we deal with and it is our job to inform them properly BEFORE any work is done. Lay out the expectations. If they don't like what you are saying they can take the problem elsewhere.

My mother has a Toyota RAV4 ala30 2.2 diesel ad-ftv. Few years back she would get limp mode on the highway going on a vacation and coming back(10-12 hour total one way straight trip), but only after driving 3-5 hours straight (and with a heavy foot) and multiple times on said trip. Not being with her I could only read some stored codes afterwards. The one that came back and was of importance had something to do with DPF (can't remember the exact code). She had this the year after too. She also said that if she tanked for gas and had a long enough break it sometimes went away and took some time to come back. but I was not able to recreate this problem at home and for a year and until the next big trip everything was perfect. So I was like hmm this seems/might be like something getting really really hot/heat soaked and electronic. I knew the differential sensor for the DPF was mounted pretty close to the turbo (4-5 inches), just in case I ordered a new one and also moved it about 5-6 inches away wich worked fine with the flexible hoses (no bends,or pinched lines after). So because of the rather harder to recreate conditions I semi diagnosed and semi guessed that this sensor might be the issue, the car was about 9 years old and 80-90k miles so a sensor going bad was not that strange. She has been on multiple vacations since with same driving and milage. The problem was resolved by moving the sensor. She has been on the same vacation the years before since she had it new but finally this sensor was giving up under intense and long duration of heat.

Few years ago, i had an F-150 come in and the only symptom/cust complaint was intermittent "no crank". Cust couldn't say if it was dead battery, bad this/ that or what.....come to find out the truck was bought from the auction and it seriously took 8 "come backs" over a 6 month period. Every time it would act up, the customer would wait until it started and then bring it in, OR towing it in, things would get jarred and it fired right up. Again, took 6 months of come backs to finally get it to act up while at the shop. Turns out the PCM was dropping out all communications. We priced him a PCM install w programming, he decided to resell it through the auction...😔😔😔
