Last Sunday I accompanied my fourteen year old son (159 employee 😁) to the "Quantum of Solace" rally on Lake Garda: 1 Aston Martin on the run and a pack of 70 Alfa 159s in tow, along the tunnels between Salò and Riva, bringing the scene of the life of the film oo7. 😂 funny. (Aston from Great Britain, 159 from Italy, Austria, Slovakia, Denmark, Poland, Switzerland, Slovenia, Romania, mostly black).

Just wanted to leave a comment of appreciation Neil, have been the proud owner of a 159 TBI Ti saloon in appropriate Alfa Rosso for the last 9 months. It's my first car, and this guide was really useful for figuring out what one to go for and check the common issues. Thanks from Adelaide, Australia!

Been watching this channel for a while now, very informative and complete. I own an Alfa 159 1.9jtdm 8v 4door/sedan version from december 2005 I believe (previously owned by my father who bought it new. 'grigio titanio' color, red leather interior). I am driving it since 2009, owning it myself since 2012. Still my 'weekly driver' (I mostly use my road bike or motorcycle for daily transportation). To give every one an honest input, main problems that did occur: 1) power steering reservoir (failing filter?) and fluid changed under warranty I believe, in 2009. Not really a big deal, however a design flaw of the inner filter, certainly a problem in colder climates; 2) had to replace the condensor twice (pretty expensive). Apparantly it gets easily punctured by 'road stones' as the air intake in front bumper is pretty low. I did install dark metal gratings onto the air intakes at front bumper after second replacement, (third ... ) condensor has been fine ever since. But this is not an Alfa specific problem, however design of air intake on front bumper does speed up this problem occuring; 3) the steering lock mechanism has failed twice. Car refuses to go in start mode if that happens. Dashboard doesnt even light up. This happened once in 2019 which I then had replaced by a refurbished unit. A second time a couple of months ago, after which I disassembled the steering lock, removed the mechanism altogether (nylon gear and pin) and had a latching relais soldered as replacement of the mechanism ... . Has been fine ever since. A lot of information can be found on alfaowner.com - how to fix/bodge steering wheel mechanism; 4) Rear left window mechanism was changed as it failed last year. These are the only four ''abnormal'' problems I/my father had with this car since it was new. Otherwise only normal maintenance was performed. Currently have around 250.000kms on the clock. The engine is ''chiptuned'' also (squadra-tuning.nl - medio tuning), EGR disabled, ever since 2013/2014. I am considering to go for the massimo tuning, just for the fun of it. This is a pretty reliable vehicle, with a very reliable engine. I only use this car for longer distances, and then let it warm up to ideal operating temperature before really driving it in higher rpm's/more ''sporty'', for which even a modern diesel is best used for (general rule: it takes twice the time of the coolant coming to temperature). I am a pretty defensive driver, I try to be a ''gentleman'' in traffic. However, I do test the car in corners at higher speeds, just for the fun of it, and do try to pull-up to higher rpm's from time to time. Even after all those years, I still want to keep it and happily drive it every time. Even the red leather interior is in pretty good condition (I clean and condition it at least once yearly, with premium products). This is a very comfortable car in my opinion, with a sporty feel, and pretty reliable. Like every other car: check the service history before buying it, or at least buy it from someone 'reliable''. Every year it passes the obligatory vehicle inspection test in Belgium without any remarks (not that they are really strict in their testing, but still). Even the current car mechanic who does the maintenance since a couple of years has no remarks: he advises to keep on driving it. No noticeable oil consumption, gearbox and clutch still original and working. No bizarre noises or anything. There is wear and tear that you feel while driving (certainly since we have driven it since new, you can feel the difference), mostly in the suspension part. But nothing serious and certainly nothing to change/worry about. If you take proper care of his car, it will take proper care of you. If you can buy one used and in certain good condition: do not hesitate. Hope that this is informative for anyone. Otherwise free publicity ;) . I anyone has further questions: I'll try to keep an eye on this comment in the next few months.

Honest review of your car ,I have the 159 tbi 1.75cc mapped up to 240bhp from 200.Overal a good car with the best 159 engine in my humble opinion.Problems so far broken headlight adjuster switch which caught me out as it is now a MOT failure since 2016 (never even used it as I'm a solo driver ).The coolant bottle is brittle on these cars and i needed a new one.The gearbox are not the best Gm m32 a bit knotty and Known to go on high mileage. Also the glass in the wing mirror nesting corrodes on the 159 and the Brera .Stone chips are a bugger as itsa large bonnet area I have given up touching them up! And my petrol sensor has recently been replaced as the reading was all over the place, apparently this does happen on the 159s.Apart from that I love the drive and the look of the car .

For those interested, to give an update: meantime still only 250.000 kms ... . 'Problems' in the meantime: several wishbone bushes are starting to 'fail'. Still within margin, but steering isnt as 'sharp' anymore, as well as you can 'feel'' and hear noticeable 'smacking'of suspension/wishbones around the car when going over speed bumps etcetera. Not a real problem, but am considering to have the bushes replaced. Another thing to note: the weather seals inside all the doors have failed, resulting into rain water getting into the car/cabine (certainly during longer heavy rain). This is visible through a 'raintrail'going over door trim into footwell, as well as wet carping ... . I followed clear instructions on youtube to replace the deteriorated seal by an all weather silicone kit (did it yesterday to all 4 doors), and after one night of heavy rain: no more leakage inside the cabine. All in all still very pleased with this car.

Yes one broken coil prompted me to swap all of them for the eibach coils all round and I can vouch for handling and drive it’s a true Alfa in every way. Reliable no trouble at all pipercross air filters kept things fresh. You buy an Alfa to drive something different and the drivers make the drive. If you don’t like the drive buy something else 😎

I had a (facelift) 156 with 1.9 JTD (115HP?) for 3 years as a company car (fleet manager was an alfista 😁). Apart from the noticible turbo gap it was a real pleasure to drive, very nimble. The steering was incredibly direct with lots of feedback and in corners the car stuck to the road like chewing gum.

I’m seriously considering the 1800 mpi to replace my old Corolla I’m 19 so insurance will b fun especially seeing as I clock up 20k a year on it for work probably going to burn, literally every family member (especially grandpa) has warned me off them due to reliability despite the fact that he himself had Vauxhalls… enough said, I drove one and it’s was so nice and when I drove the Toyota avensis estate I couldn’t believe the difference the avensis felt so wooden to drive, no feeling at all, I don’t go mad… whiter than white I have to b because for some reason all us young drivers are exactly the same apparently… 😂

Hey man, I am loving your content, I have a small problem with my 159 1.9 jtd SW, when cruising at 90km/h I have a continuous noise coming from the front, sounds like a helicopter from far away, the further I am from 90kms the lesser the sounds, par example at 100 or 80 there is no noise, also there is like sound of jet engine coming from behind the dash when I first start the car, I think it's brakes related because when I press the brake pedal it goes away, sometimes comes back when I'm driving... IDK the car is either actually alive or haunted, she makes a lot of stuff but does it occasionally, sometimes she is perfect for a week, then trows an engine code, then is fine for another month...

Any advice to give regarding the automatic gearboxes? Known issues, decent/rubbish, flappy paddles work ok, manual far far better or just user preference etc? Do they cope with the torque of the 2.4, and do they cope with a remap? I'm looking to change from a Saab 9-5 with the 1.9 diesel to a 159 with the 2.4 for a bit more fun, character and performance. Slightly concerning you say the 2.4 is more agricultural, I would have thought the opposite as 4 pot diesels are often quite chuggy and the more cylinders the better.

Hi, I am currently in the process of re-building 159 "Medium" trim into TI version. Among few last things to upgrade on mine are standard brakes (1.9 16V JTDm) to get upgrade to 305mm Brembo brakes in the front for which I have obtained Brembo calipers, TI knuckles with radial calipers mounts and another ABS sensors (305mm discs, pads and bearings to the knuckles I will be buying brand new). Can someone hint me if rear brakes on 1.9 16V "TI" are exactly same as on non-TI version? Many thanks. Luke.

Do you think an Alfa Romeo 159 1.9jtdm 150hp sedan is a good first car? I'm soon turning 18, and my criteria for my 1st car is that it's from atleast 2004(same age as me), that it's a sedan, that it looks decent and it has low consumption. I've heard the 2.4 200hp diesel engine is more reliable than the 1.9, but 200hp for my first car, no thanks. Way too much for a beginner even if I can drive and trust my skils, it's dangerous. So should i go for the alfa or look somewhere else?
