Amid the India-China stand-off, a more prominent role for the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) in LAC management with the Army is being considered. This brings into focus India’s many paramilitary, armed police and border forces. In episode 517 of ThePrint's #CutTheClutter, Shekhar Gupta lists all, their role and pedigree and how these add up to the third largest land army in the world.

I am a big admirer of your journalism Shekhar Gupta ji. I was exposed to your content only after you started #cuttheclutter. I really love your dispassionate dissection of the events/stories. One suggestion I have regarding the premier news segment i.e. cut the clutter. I live in US, and I have seen this process done successfully by political commentators in social media over here. In CTC instead of a 25-30mins one continuous news video, you can divide it into 2-3 videos of length 7-8mins covering one topic each. This will multiply views n times, and also generate more views (and revenues) as people might not always find time to invest full 30mins but can invest in watching shorter videos. In each video towards the end you can mention that next I will discuss this n this. You can also keep the complete video segment as a separate video. This segmentation can bring in more younger viewers having less attention span and make them fall in love with your awesome journalism.

Very informative presentation on India's armed forces and paramilitary forces. You are quite right about more police and paramilitary forces personnel laying life for our safety and security than army personnel. But, we become teary eyed when a soldier dies, and think very little of personnel of these forces who runs risk of their lives more often than soldiers. Our love and respect for our armed forces is skewed. I recall that in the mid eighties when the number of paramilitary forces grew by leaps and bounds, some southern chief ministers, especially Ramakrishna Hegde and NT Rama Rao expressed alarm over the development. They felt that such huge number of armed forces could be used for intimidating the States ruled by the opposition parties.

It is a new subject to educate us. Well done. But Mr Gupta could have explained essentially what is the difference between Armed Forces( Army,Navy & Airforce) and a paramilitary force. Though I could deduce from the talk it would have given a better clarity. As few pointed out CISF and Coast Guard were missed or they do not fall in the ambit of pata military. I also recommend that to highlight the difference between para military and State armed police forces.

@@180190ful Its politicians and spineless bureaucracy is the curse.. geography is a dream only if you have sensible leadership who follow through on certain policies, otherwise its a nightmare. Like stopping army who wanted to capture PoK and Gilgit when chasing out Pak army in (Mercenary clothes), not supporting Tibetian fighters who were fighting chinese...now you are paying dearly for that. Not cutting of Soviet Union when Shastri mysteriously died , not finishing off Karachi and capturing Lahore. Not maintaining cordial relationship with Burma,Nepal and Bangladesh. Not going on the offensive after Kargil, Recognizing one china and allowing Tibetian government in Exile in India(what a joke...you are not supporting the Tibetian cause...but you want to show off that you are good natured by having Tibetian government) All because of bureaucrats and certain kind of politicians who never cared about strategy and lacked vision of Safe India.
