In 2024 it should be illegal to ask for, store or use someone’s social security number for anything that isn’t officially a government transaction. The fact that medical entities ask for your SSN is completely inappropriate, but most folks fill out their medical history and personal info and are under the impression that their SSN is required. Same with schools and colleges and job applications.

They ask for insurance verification reasons. It sucks but sometimes your member ID doesn't work.

@@2rx_bni To purchase insurance through the Marketplace/govt exchange, yes. That is a legitimate governmental transaction. Same with obtaining Medicaid/Medicare. But there is absolutely no reason for private companies such as a hospital, doctor’s office, dentist etc to have your SSN. There are plenty of other identifiers, specifically name/date of birth to verify and confirm your health insurance. I have never provided my SSN when asked. It’s none of their business. I don’t trust their employees, their computer systems or their intentions. 😬

FYI social security use to sue people for using SS#. until the US military stared using SS#. then they gave up.

You can change your social security number. However, the IRS will inform you if there's something suspicious. You can only change it 12 times. Someone I know had done so 4x and I wasn't keen to find out why. As for being in the breach, I pay a service. I was not compromised. My family will be getting that service for Xmas this year. They're officially elderly in 2025.

My dad's run up against these issues in his career and when I asked he advised me that as long as I notified my employer, I was doing the right thing. We were federally contracted so it wasn't legal for me to speak past that. Management did nothing so it became their problem when nothing was reported. My hands are clean. It still feels bad tho.

@ITProTv about the flightaware subscruptions etc that is listed at the footer on their page And looks like it's alot of extra functions for pilots and enterprise Like tracking, monitoring, live weather data etc and there is three payed tiers

Its ok. My SSN was issued during a period when database computers were mostly all there was available. My social security number starts with a 6 and I was born in a sea of 5s, and likewise all my friends were 5s. What does this mean? That it was easy to track me and my financial activity. What does this do for me now? I am still tracked.

With valve offering support for steamos on ally it could be looking to get more steam users on Linux which to push game Devs to better support or at least not actively break proton reducing Windows monopoly on PC gaming and ultimately benefiting the steam deck. Plus it is probably not that hard as chimeraos already has support which is basically community steamos

Love that I paused to write my comment then... I will say as a Steam on Linux user I am definitely more inclined to buy games from steam I can check proton compatibility and it usually just works. That being said I have acquired a few games from epic and others stores through prime gaming and heroic launcher has made that pretty painless. The one thing I did just think about tho is I am pretty sure Xbox live is unusable on Linux

The Steam Deck is a handheld Linux PC (arch) built into a superb handheld gaming console. Rog Ally is just a weak attempt to get into the consolified PC gaming market, they would flunk on its own and Steam just want more users using Steam/SteamOS. They win either way, their hardware is better and people will use their software anyways.
