Since we have few or no lakes in Southern California that can be swum in, due to their being water reservoirs when they exist, this is pretty much wasted on me. I live near the beach so ho-hum on that. The mountains, where the forests are, tend to burn from wildfires in the summer and early fall. We call it fire season. It goes along with the rainy season, spring, summer, fall and winter. You don't want to be there during fire season. We do go out to the desert during the summer. Don't ask why. We just do.

My father was notorious at the lake when I was a kid - they called him The White Nose Man. Wore a bucket hat and his nose was always called in zinc oxide cream - he'd chase the little kids that had bare noses and they'd run screaming in all directions. No one was getting skin cancer on his watch - and this was in the early 70s, long before sunscreen over 30spf was even a thing. The girls actually wore tanning oil, the beach always smelled like artificial coconut.

My 17th birthday (4th of July!) is my all time favorite so far. My Uncle bought $600 of fireworks. We started lighting fuses at noon & went well past midnight firing off entire strings of ladyfingers, holding tank & Roman candle fights, setting up bottle rocket displays... Where was the Sheriff? On the porch pickin & grinnin with his deputies. The volunteer fire department Chief was helping the younger kids pick out what they wanted from the boxes & showing them how safely light a punk to start the fuse.

I had to drive to Toronto, Canada to buy that book back in 1995!!! Pre google, pre Amazon, UK books were so hard to find. I drove up, took 10 hours, and spent almost $300 at the giant bookstore there. Got all the red dwarf books, and others by Hugh Laurie, Stephen Fry, and Ben Elton. Luckily, it was Canadian money so, bargain! Luckily I was also dating a native at the time. ;). But I was really there for the books..
