I’ll be an incoming freshman or “crab” for the BCU band this summer. I’m glad I saw this because I just got my band music in the mail the other day and I’m rather nervous that I’ll mess up badly even though I practice my trombone like every day and that I’ll probably wind up being alone and not making any friends. In August I will be starting band camp for marching band, and I’m already scared. I’m not even in high school yet, so i don’t really know what to expect. I play bari sax when I’m in concert band, but when I march, i will play tenor. Any advice for me? I’ll be the only student still in middle school in the band.

I AGREE WITH YOU 100%! I'm a GSU "WORLD FAMED" Tiger Alumni Band Member, crabbed fall 93 and we had a sideline too. Freshmen need to be humble, on time, know their music, stay or get in shape, learn the dance steps quickly, respect everyone. As far as hazing goes, it's not suppose to happen. Instead of hazing, I tried to MOTIVATE the crabs to work harder. Unfortunately, there will always be some freshmen show up that will make you want to haze them, but upperclassmen are suppose to know better and that is why it is important for the band director to choose the right person to be section leader to keep their section under control.

You’ll be fine, I’m 2 years late so I’m sure you got it together! I’ll still give you the tips though. I would make it clear to the band director what instrument you want to play. Worst thing they can say is no. I did the same and I still ended up going to an instrument that they band needed. Overall just learn the instrument you want to play even if it’s not what you’re marching and your hard work will show and they may move you.

I’m going into 7th grade this year and my brother’s highschool band director has asked me if I would do marching band as a seventh grader since i’m old enough. So we have this thing called the Rookie Band Camp (Not the actual band camp) but because of the COVID-19 thing we have to have our physicals done in order to participate in it. I didn't know about it at all so I wasn't able to make a reservation in time so I missed out on the Rookie Band Camp... so sad... I hope that's okay for the band director tho...

KuddoK in my school band was band. There was no separate class for marching and concert band. In the fall you march and in the spring it’s concert band season BUT it was the same class

Princesa Montiel same thing applies. Flutes and piccolos sit in the first row so it’s best y’all know y’all music to the T because y’all are DIRECTLY in front of the band director. You literally cannot mess up.

Matthew Heard nothing tbh, they’re still in charge. When the time comes to apply to become section leader, if you feel that you can be a better section leader then apply for the position and if what you think is true then you’ll get the position.
