frankly, i think when you take on an older car with the intent to renew it, then you're on the hook to do so. bringing it back to a relative higher standard is the reason some of us watch channels like yours. we aren't attracted to just buying an older car only to find the solutions too daunting, we want to see you overcome the challenges and make it like new again. just my 2 cents :)

Joel, you need to keep this car. It's not only a car; it's your car education. From the work you have done so far, you have learned a lot. You will look at things differently. E.g. the 800 quid you spent on brakes is something that is very, very doable yourself. So keep the car, buy a multimeter and trace the wiring for the stereo and make sure it's sound. Then fix the angle spline sleeve Haldex thing - basically the splines wear out and the prop shaft turns freely without gripping the splines: therefore no AWD. Keep it! And the more work you do, the more you will value this car and you will reassess other cars you come across. Most of us here have had a similar 'project car' that was the making of us: mine was an old Saab convertible. Until that car I thought I was a 'car guy'. I wasn't. I was nothing! That car made me! This XC90 is making you!

The AWD will be the coupling (spline) where the prop goes in...Park it up and get under it and if the rear prop shaft spins by hand then its your issue.

Hey Joel, love the channel. Those ABS rings swell as they corrode which increases the outside diameter, so they start kissing the ABS sensor. An easy fix, and I’ve done this before with my BMW, is to unscrew the ABS sensor put a little washer underneath it and then mount it back onto the bracket so that with the washer underneath the ABS sensor is sitting back by 1 mm no longer kissing the rings it’s a simple job for a couple of pence.

The car you have , you know what is needed, to change it to another is to start all over again. You can always get a set of drive shafts with hubs from the junkyard for the ABS ring change. Then it is pop out the drive shafts from the inner cv’s and replace shafts and hubs, no need to try split the hubs from the outer cv’s.

@@sickbozzer Where electricy is sourced is a different issue. EV's are better in town due to zero tailpipe emmsions. I live on a High Street and the smell of fumes from ICE vehicle is really bad.

⁠@@sickbozzerI wish we could get away from the argument that goes “I bet the emission from the power station are just as bad”. TLDR - they are not, not even close. Around 60% of electricity in the UK is low carbon. Also ICEs have an at best efficiency (including end to end for energy distribution) of 35% and EVs have an energy efficiency of around 70% (including all generation and distribution losses). Hence ICEs emit less than half the carbon and pollution (worst case) and there are multiple source that indicate it’s actually closer to four times less. Also given the relative cleanliness of using gas to generate electricity (which is the primary carbon source for UK generation) the air pollution is orders of magnitude lower. And before we finish up let’s just not talk e-fuels which are a complete disaster with an (at best) 17% end to end efficiency. I am a petrol-head, but I also recognize that their days are numbered and for a good reason.

With a high mileage diesel like the Volvo I’d recommend getting a Terraclean of the engine. It’s not the cheapest but I’ve done it on several cars with excellent results. It may well fix your rough running. I recently got my diesel Jag done and the performance difference was amazing with a massive drop in emissions. Do try it. Would make a good episode.

Check the vacuum out of the vacuum pump to the turbo wastegate / engine mounts is working. There tiny rubber seal in the one-way valve in the lid of the vacuum pump. The valves often fails. And rough idling is injectors. And maybe the whole inlet manifold is filled with gunk (sticky oily mess) caused by the EGR. In the A pillars are drain pipes from the sunroof, these pipes crumble and fail, causing water ingress in the front footwell and drowning the stability control unit. Check the alternator brushes (and bearings).

I bought my xc90 for £800 aswell, it has a abs light oil leak engine mounts where shot, no mot and a horrible misfire that I changed a injector for a brand new one, just over 2k for all the work to be done, and I wouldn’t change it, the thing is brilliant, the injector fault turned out the be the connector, I’d probably suggest checking those, I had to close the connectors up slightly to make good contact

I have a 2010 XC, with 178k on the clock, and have spent plenty on it so far, including £600 on paint repairs in the last few weeks. However, I wouldn't want another car, this does everything so well, and feels super safe on the road. Good job with yours, keep going, it will be worth it in the end.

The lads at Salvage Rebuilds UK are experts with a wealth of experience and skills - who for the most part make very clever buys from copart and I enjoy watching professionals make money from honest hard work. This on the other hand is a have a go hero making a disastrous buy from copart, who has little idea what he is doing or why. He's thrown good money after bad and the car was a heap of shit at the start and is a heap of shit now (albeit with an M.O.T.). and I love him for it - outstanding!

Cheapest option you can try is taking a blowtorch and heating the surface of where she shaft goes into the hub, then use a bronze shaft to smash it out. It's helped me out a dozen of times on the crusty musty's. Never a guarantee that it'll work, but it'll save you the damages of them using a press.

I'm a fan of the XC90, and i'm on my second now, a 2009 V8 (and paying waaaaaaaay less in insurance than Joel, but i'm older!) However, with that car, you'll never get back the money spent if you were to sell it, and really, unless you can do everything yourself to keep the costs down, it was never going to make sense. As you don't have a family or dogs to carry round, maybe sell it quick making the most of the fresh MOT to re-coup as much as you can, and consider it a learning experience ?

I love the original XC90 - I had one from new (2007) until 2017 and did about 120k miles in it. The wife clobbered the driveway gate with it and we decided to trade it in at that point and I still miss it. However (there’s always a but!) they are a complex machine with some very annoying design “quirks” that make things that should be relatively straightforward to fix extremely hard. A small oil leak from the gearbox? Take the whole engine out - 20 hours of labour. Issues with the fiber-optics can often write the car off. The rear wheel drive part of the AWD often fails as the splines strip on the spline sleeve (and it happens again and again). Forget to change the auxiliary belt? Watch out because it will destroy the engine if it fails and wraps around the cogs. These cars are stupidly complex and expensive to maintain (even more so than Range Rovers). I would move it on and quickly!

Finally an update. 👍😃 This would make good future episodes how to fix old car and as others commented it is about going all in and fixing this old girl. Maybe you can join some other more mechanically minded youtuber and fix the abs using the big hammer or something. 😂 But I think if you give it away it is sort of half cooked. You can do quick check on AWD system. Go under the car and try to spin the prop shaft as car is in Park. If it spins, then your angle gear sleeve splines are gone. Will need new angle gear and sleeve. If it doesnt, then the issue is in broken or clogged Haldex pump. Otherwise I love the high mileage rescue. Keep up. 👍

Parts for a 20 year old Xc90 are fairly cheap, lots around on different sites from scrapped cars to brand new parts. Love my 19 year old Xc90 wouldn't part with her.

That's the thing with these AWD, cause they don't go off road the rear diff doesn't detect any slip in the wheel so doesn't engage. Over time they seize and don't work. Evidently, just remove the prob shaft and you'll be fine 👍 - Mechanic by day - over 10yrs in volvo

The 4W drive system doesn't work probable because the splines on the axle between gearbox and transfer box (angled gear for rear wheel drive) are gone/worn away. There are only two solutions: new transfer box, which is prohibitive expensive or the engineering options. This involve drilling holes in the sleeve that connects the transferbox to the gearbox which slides over the transferbox axle. Then drill a big hole in the transferbox casing so the sleeve can be welded through the transferbox housing hole using the holes in the sleeve to the axle. The alignment of the sleeve must be perfect. Close the hole in the transferbox with liquid metal. This last solution means the transferbox can never be disassembled anymore. So maybe put in new bearings before the welding. And put two oil seals in the gearbox (where the sleeve fits in), they tend to leak there. I did that 6 years ago to my XC90. 50k km later it still holds. If the splines are gone can easily be tested; can the propshaft to the rear wheels be turned with the engine off (safety) and gearbox in park? If yes, then transferbox problem.

They are terrible for the driveshafts seizing, volvo have a hydraulic press that bolts to the hub. But even that sometimes doesn't budge them. Sometimes only option is to replace driveshaft and knuckle

The answer is yes, you can get a double mattress in the back. As to 4X4 it's the haldex unit on rear axle. It's an etremely common fault.

Nope. AWD Volvos are normally 90% drive to the fronts, 10% to the rear unless wheel slip, then the electronics manage the traction. Because the front wheels do 90% of the work, - steer, brake and drive, that is where you want the new rubber. The rears only hold the back corners up.

£2K for insurance? My current policy cost me less than half of that. I'm a bit older than you so that might have something to do with it. Be thankful you're not paying £600+ in VED unlike certain Land Rover Discovery drivers. Fixing the AWD shouldn't be too expensive. I had to pay about £300 for a reconditoned DEM to fix mine. The fault codes will point you in the right direction. It would help if your bottom left display was working. Most other AWD problems are the Steering Angle Sensor (SAS) which is integated in the clock spring, the yaw sensor (particularly if the sunroof is leaking), and stripped splines on the bevel gear (transfer box). You've done the right thing by getting it through the MoT first. The other stuff can be done at your lesiure. The parking brake can be a pig of a job but mine has always got through the test. I spent nowhere near as much on my rear brakes (discs, pads, parking brake shoes and the left rear caliper). My mechanic has had problems with stuck XC90 driveshafts but my front ones have come out without any problems. I once had that problem with a stuck drifeshaft when I was changing the rear wheel bearings on a BMW E36 318i. I found a hub puller tool in Machine Mart which got the driveshaft out.

As a Volvo owner, who has always liked the XC90 and still wants one, but loves his C70 too much better than the S40 he sold to get it….. id say it’s definitely worth it, they are lovely cars, and the D5 engines are made of granite, at 300k it’s only just run in, maybe a terraclean and your laughing, and as for the audio systems in these cars…. It’s a must to sort out, it’ll sound like a nite club on wheels…

Hello, the AWD doesn't work probably due to the lack of haldex fluid change, check if there's a filter also. After changing it should engage. My V8 XC90 is still being worked on. The engine will get a second life, the steering is being changed and every bushing im the rear suspension. It cost me about $9000 to but and about $15000 to to keep it in excellent technical health. Hope to her it before Chrostmas 😂

Had my xc90 2003 for 5 years it had done 233,000 miles, and the oil seal went between engine and clutch, just after I did a service on it, (it’s common to go after a service due to the higher oil pressure I was told, it would of cost a £1,000 to put right, I decided to get a c70 mkll, instead, my mate has it now had the work done and his still driving it about 6 months later. On the subject of insurance I was paying about £1,300 and then the magic 10 years came along and it dropped to £400 Will get another one next year maybe 😊

Great to see the xc90 to be on the road, however… After so much efforts i really think this was a mistake to take such a shortcut with the ABS. Do have a question though - does it has 4wheel drive now, that the abs in not functional (as usually the haldex kicks the back end in only when slip is detected, and car needs abs sensors for that)? If not - back to my point: so many efforts and it’s not even a good winter car with the abs light shortcut…

Vice grip garage does long road trips in far ropier cars than that XC90. I say take it to Sweden. It will be an adventure. I've slept in the back of my XC90 on a self inflating mattress. Plenty of room with the rear 2 rows of seats down and flat enough too.

Keep it and continue the adventure! Those handbrakes are something you see more on these cars. Had mine replaced as well. That insurance is ridiculousely high, why is that, your age? Accident free years low because 2nd car? In the Netherlands I pay 47 euros a month for all risk insurance! But I do know road taxes in uk are much better, I pay 120 euros a month on road tax. So maybe together it is about the same. Do have to mention mine is a petrol, diesel road tax is even a lot higher.

Clearing the ABS fault without fixing the problem is a cop out. Frankly the ABS is still faulty which should be an MOT failure so you are driving a car that is potentially unsafe. If it was me I would source the drive shafts and the hubs second hand and swap them out fixing the rings at the same time. It’s not a big job given you have had most of the nuts off already. But I guess that’s the difference between a car fixing channel and a driving channel.

When you started it up it sounded like it was down on a cylinder. OK I watched on a bit and you spoke of why it's misfiring. NO way I would proceed with spending money on this until the engine fault was sorted. D5's are not lumpy at all, nice 5 cylinder burble tons of power and very smooth. Do yourself a favour and sort it quickly.

Ah I'm sorry but that seems extortionate for what is just rear ds & ps and handbrake cables, that seems really really expensive and a really long time with what I presume is gonna be aftermarket anyway, I think you've been stung a little but good to see it's back! I had a S40 that I completely gave up on, it was absolutely mint and I spent the world on it but after non stop spending it left me with a really bitter taste and experience of Volvos and I've never had one since!

Getting the steering wheel set straight should be no more than £30 at a small local tyre garage. They'll set steering wheel straight and adjust the tracking it takes about 15 mins. Enjoy

Sterling work Joel. Some people on here moaning that it has a dodgy MOT however if there is no warning light then they can pass it legally. End of. Doesn't matter who cleared the fault code. Fact is, there is no warning light at the point of MOT. Therefore genuine pass. Morally in the clear too. Garage knows it's a well known youtuber who isn't in the business of deception. Therefore Joel you did damn well and should be proud. Don't listen to the naysayers.

Well as you won't get your money back you may as well just slowly fix the rest over time as even with a full mot its only worth about 1500 so it's catch 22 if you like it fix it or just run it as it is and bin it after the mot expires but why is your insurance so high my 2010 3.0 crd jeep overland costs me about 400 a year

One car I sold at auction needed 5 new tyres, new battery new clutch, 2 head gaskets(V6) and some rascal had stolen the stereo and broken a rear window -there's a good reason to put stuff in the auction. It wasn't even a high miler but to fix it made no sense, and it was a gas guzzler.

Went down a rabbit hole with that one , unfortunately the labour rates make more and more cars unviable I am running a lightly used 22 year old Ford galaxy but the economics are really marginal when the car is booked at £1000 just really keeping it beyond a logical point but it remains to me a lovely car

We’ve had our 1999 Galaxy for over 20 years and it’s such a great car. The last few years it always seems to take £300 to £400 to get it through the MoT (this year was welding) but in all these years we’ve never even stranded in it - it’s been such a great and versatile car. It’s still very tidy and presentable - I’ve just taken delivery of a brand new Puma, but I love driving the Galaxy!
