I have a 3.0 E85 too - had a backbox delete on it, changing over to a proper exhaust system now with a deep tone but much much less volume

Interesting that the pre 2006 l6 cars sound a lot louder and pop more just as standard. I know they are different |6 engines and the exhaust setups are different on the older E85

I think it's also because of ongoing legislation over exhaust noise etc etc. If I remember correctly it's a similar story with the current M2, the facelift version has a quieter exhaust for legal reasons.

I have the 2004 2.2 manual. We should do a comparison between the 2.2, the 2.5 and the 3.0. I know the the 3.0 has the 6th gear which is annoying. Love my car though. It is such a character and makes long journeys a real adventure unlike modern cars!

I’m not sure if it’s the sound quality but I expected more from Joel’s car. My Z4 is a 03’ 2.5i and boy does mine sound untamed. It’s loud, pops, bangs and a lot more. I suspect the previous owner increase the pipe size as well because my pipe looks new and it’s a 20 year old car. It’s still light on fuel though.

The Sound generator ruins the sound so much, definitely get rid of it. It's fun if you want to impress people (remove the sponges inside it) and it's ear shattering loud inside. But absolutely not drivable if you actually use the e85 as a daily. Best Sound i have achieved on my 3 Liter e85 is: Mid-Silencer straight piped + Backbox delete. The popps are very loud with a lovely exhaust note. @Joel, you should have your Mid-Silencer removed :)

I have 2 Bimmers, a 2004 Z4 2.5 and a 2001 330ci. Both have the stock exhaust and both are way more quiet than the "stock" Z4. Now that being said I do live in the U.S. I wonder if our exhausts are quieter because of all the govenment regulations? BTW Joel your backbox delete sounds great! I bet it's loud though, I want to put a high performance backbox on, hopefully it will keep the tone without the high volume. I see others were talking about that too.

Running Racing Dynamics headers with the back-box delete on the 2.5i and the sound is much better than stock. Not tuned though so get a lot of pops and crackles. For casual driving/music listening it's fine, especially if you have the amp/speakers in yours. For long trips, no, unless the top is up. Still expect a lot of noise, but it's definitely tolerable for shorter trips under an hour. If you are driving to work on the highway though in a daily, def worth thinking about adding a muffler.

Honestly the stock sounds tight. Its really not bad for stock. It could maybe be a little more throaty but it's not bad The other sound is sloppy and puts me in mind of a yard truck or something on a construction site lol.

Hey Andrea - thanks for watching! Valve is definitely a better option, as it will allow you to stop the loud noise when you’re cruising. The only reason I didn’t do that, is because it’s more expensive!

Does the delete affect the horsepower at all? I heard cars with no turbos often suffer from loss of horsepower when things like the muffler are taken off.

Definitely hasn’t affected my car, it’s naturally aspirated anyway!

That’s called backpressure but actually freeing up the exhaust on any car results is a hp gain but just a muffler delete is a gain but you’ll never notice it’s mostly for sound but until you take out the Catalytic converters is when most of the hp comes in

Looking for a MAF adapter for an 07 3.0si. I need more info on the intake manifold though, as previous attempts at an intake resulted in regular startup and then instantly running wayyyyyy to lean and the engine just cuts out. As far as I can tell one of the main differences in the si cars is a different 3 stage DISA intake manifold? I had a 2009 128i that had the same N52 (the 1 was an N52B30) engine in it and it had a different manifold. Ive peeked into a couple of 328 and 528 N52 engine bays and those manifolds look different from NA 330 and 530s ive peeked at. Im not sure if an improved manifold and altered ecu programming are what give each model a bump up over the standard 28, and might be the bump between the regular 3.0 and the si. At any rate yet again the MAF sensor is built into the box, and I dont want to buy an intake not made for the car but fits the sensor just to literally cut out the slot and weld it to another pipe. I think thatd be silly, plus im not sure if itll run wayyyy to lean again.

my z4 recently started with alarm problems...seems like when you lock it it has a bit of a delay before the alarm activates and if you unlock it because you forgot something in the car car the alarm activates on the open button and goes crazy anyone else who had this issue?
