Picture this. You’re a child at primary school in a rough area. Your single parent can’t afford dance let alone ballet lessons. This song comes on in the playground and transports you away. When Kate Bush wrote this song she was around 16 years old & she was interviewed about her experience of going to the record company with this song. She said you must believe in yourself completely because, if you don’t, no one else will. Such an inspiration to young people everywhere.

@@Mee-n3e hmm well considering the first official pop chart in the uk was 1952. and in the 1970's there was a massive 1950's revival i'd say it's perfectly understandable for someone to have that knowledge. my mum (in her early 20's, in 1970) was into a lot of 1950's music, which in turn i heard growing up.. i feel genuinely sad that young people (i hate that phrase) today have not heard of many groundbreaking musical artists..

The self-written song that launched her amazing and unparalleled career at the age of 19 (No.1 for four weeks in the UK in 1978). Most of her early songs were sung in a high register but that was a particularly affected vocal because she was portraying a ghost. Stick with Kate and you will be in for a very rewarding journey.

@@PeterBuwen Not quite right. She wrote that one at 18/19 shortly before recording her first album. Most of the other songs on that album were written earlier, such as ‘The Man With The Child In His Eyes’ (mostly written when she was 13) and [EDIT] ‘Saxophone Song’. Those two were on the demo tape that David Gilmour paid to have professionally recorded and produced when she was 16. EMI signed her up after hearing that tape when she was still 16.

This was the best reaction ever! Usually the reactions to this song is mostly people being confused and not sure what to think, but you loved it immediately! This song is based on the book Wuthering Heights by Emily Brontë. This is my favorite song ever, it's just a masterpiece, but so is all her songs. She's just a genius. Her videos and performances are also so unique, it's art. She's one of the most influencial artists of all time, but there will be no one else like her. Looking forward to more Kate reactions!

Someone already said that she's playing Cathy's ghost. From Wuthering Heights written in 1842 by Emily Bronte. If you go into the Bronte museum in Haworth you will find a drawing made by Emily Bronte aged 11 years old of a fist coming through a window. Likely from a paranormal event she experienced at Pondon Hall the possible model she used for Wuthering Heights but for the sake of the novel moved into a position where you'll find 'Top Withens farm house (hence Wuthering Heights). You can stay at Pondon Hall in the Cathy Room and sleep next to THE window. - 'Heathcliff it's me your Cathy come home again, so co-oh-oh-old let me in at your window'. Every year on Emily's and Kate's birthday (the same day) around the world hundreds of people get together and perform Kate's dance routine to her song. Here's Melbourne Australia in 2017. kzbin.info/www/bejne/j6CacqOJo8qEras

A few interesting facts about Kate, she started writing song when she was around 11. Indeed a song that she wrote when she was 13 won an Ivor Novell award for outstanding British Lyric. Actually she become a fellow of Ivors Academy in 2020 joining a distinguished list of other songwriter greats. Dave Gilmour received a demo tape of 50 of her songs from a mutual friend of Gimour and the Bush family, Gilmour was so impressed that he paid for studio time so Kate could produce a more professional demo tape which had three tracks. Via Gilmour this demo tape made its way to EMI who signed her. Wuthering Heights was Kate's debut single release, but originally EMI wanted to release what they thought was a more commercial like track called "James and the Cold Gun" but Kate resisted and insisted that the first single should be Wuthering Heights, in the end EMI agreed to her wishes because they thought that the record would flop and it would teach her lesson... well it became smash hit not just in UK, but it either reached number 1 or ended up high in the charts in other countries around the world. The single has led to an annual event called "The Most Wuthering Heights Day Ever" held in locations around the world where participants gather together to recreate the music video of the song, usually following the version 2 video so wearing red dresses. I've followed Kate from the start and felt a connection to her, since she came from the same part of London that I did, she lived only a couple of miles away. I can guarantee that you won't be disappointed if you go down the Kate Bush rabbit hole! She is multi-talented (songwriter, musician, dancer, record producer and video director, etc.) and has acted as an inspiration for so many artists who followed her.

She was 18 when she recorded this in the first ONE continuous take! Every note perfect! No auto tune, no rehearsal. She sang it once only for the recording. And she wrote it when she was even younger. Kate Bush is a prodigy. I remember when it came out. There was nothing like it, and there had never been, and never has been since then. BTW The ghost of Kathy here is supposed to be desperate and scary, trying to break through the window to reach Heathcliff.

Kate was the first UK female artist to have a number 1 hit with a self written song and it was her debut single. Inspired by the 1967 film of the classic 1847 gothic romance novel 'Wuthering Heights'. The song is written from the perspective of the ghost of the story's tragic heroine, who is haunting her love, Heathcliff. Kate's white dress and ethereal dance evoking the spectre of the central character of Catherine Earnshaw. Many of Kate's songs are inspired by film and literature, and like an actor, she takes on a unique point of view of a vast array of unusual and quirky characters, which she empathizes with and inhabits without judgement. Check out 'This woman's work' from the view of a father expecting his first child. Or 'Mother stands for comfort' from the perspective of a murderer who knows his mother will shield him.

This song is referring to the book with the same title, written by Emily Bronte. Catherine has died and since she loved Heathcliff, she comes to haunt him at his window. She says “Heathcliff, it’s me, I’m Cathy, I’ve come home, I’m so cold, let me in your window”… The clip is filmed with a hazy effect to reflect the story.

I'm pretty sure it's a completely unrelated guy who, when closing the window of his bedroom at the inn where he's staying (first chapter), feels icy cold bony fingers brushing against his hand .. and endeavours to learn more about this ghost called Cathy ... hence the story of Wuthering Heights.

I was 16 when this song came out and the look on your face is exactly like mine the first time I heard it-and everyone else I knew!!! Truly beautiful and totally original, Kate Bush can't be shoehorned into any musical genre; Kate is Kate. Xxx

I was probably 4 or 5 y-o, when I first heard this song, distinctly remember it being #1, back then due to same surname no other connection. Didn't appreciate this song much, at that age but yes, latterly, yes a great song, wonderfully performed.

What I have never heard comment of beyond Kate Bush's extraordinary out-of-box musical compositions and vocals is her Dancing! Does she choreograph her own dancing in her videos? Her dancing is utterly unique with traditional twists. And then, she couples this with her musical compositions and vocals.

She is singing from the perspective of Catherine, who was murdered by her husband Heathcliff in the Novel 'Wuthering Heights' by Emily Bronte. So she sounds and looks 'ethereal' because she is a 'spirit' haunting her husband. This was much later also made into a film, it's black & white, but watch it.

@@Euphoriasmotion2011 I'm a 55 English man who lives about 1 hour from there, been in the house many times, it's open to visitors, so I should know better, it's my age mate lol, but I'll be honest I believe the story that it was actually the brother that wrote those stories and after his suicide the sisters published them, there is evidence to prove they were very similar and in the sad romantic style to his previous writings, he was actually the writer in the family, they haden't done anything before publishing those stories, so very suspicious. They did the world a favour publishing them I agree, but I think they stole the credit, that's my personal opinion going off the evidence I researched.

@@Z1Hellrider Same could be said with Shakespeare, a front for many otheer writers. Media in itself is something to look into. How could the Beatles write so much, so young, while on such a strenuous touring schedule. I believe alot of it is ghost writers, social engineering, manipulation of emotions. Interesting stuff.

Kate Bush is a British icon and now a fully fledged inductee of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, Ohio and deservedly so. She had written her first ever album by age 14. David Gilmour of Pink Floyd was a friend of her brother's and was instrumental in helping her get her first recording contract. Midge Ure describes her as being like this incredibly sweet little girl who doesn't really believe that she's as good as everyone says she is. Sir Elton John is another one of her biggest fans.

So good that there’s an annual “A Very Wuthering Heights Day”, right across the globe. People get dressed up like Kate (see the video in the red dress) and do the dance to Wuthering Heights. It’s freaking fantastic!
