We have the best squad in this tournament (despite Southgate trying to ruin that as well bringing Shaw) and we have a wealth of attacking talent that he doesn't use. I'm not even sure what formation or style of play we were going for at the end. It's frustrating to watch, because deep down we can all sense that England don't believe they can win the tournament, and that becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy. Now look at Spain, who have have aggressively pursued and achieved wins in every one of their games. Spain clearly believe they can win the whole thing, and it's paying off. In football, fortune favours the brave. The one thing going in England favour is that the side of the knockout stages they've landed on is arguably more forgiving than the other side, which has Spain, Germany, France, etc. In theory England could survive all the way to the final, but I don't see them ever winning a final playing the way they are. You need to play to win, which England aren't doing.

Every team we've played against has locked down the midfield in front of their area and nullified any attacking threat from England. It's not a proper 4231, it's 433 with 2 DMs. Portugal play a proper 4231 with 3 players working as interchangeable No10s and fullbacks providing the overlap.
