A terrible idea. A lot of studies show that. Plus the lack of exercise, breaks and sun light is unhealthy. I'm glad that it showed its hard on kids and teachers. Everyone needs breaks. Not to mention recess is also a time for teachers to run errands and go to the bathroom or get a drink of water. No recess makes that harder.

I love this, it really shows how politicians tick -make a crisis, such as school tests are going down, overreact and compare to other countries as competition -do something over the top like cancel a small break for children in the day -things go well in the short term, but screw up on the long term. The obvious failures are kept under wraps -politicians backflip, but dress the backflip up as a 'new strategy' instead, make and create something exactly like what recess is, pronounce it differently and thus take the credit of something that was already in place -overall, get credit for doing literally nothing at the end, no one knows the difference, get voted back in anyway due to media craze

@@sheena9p90 Can't speak for the schools in the US, but where I went to school, total recess time was around 45 minutes a day. Start of school is at 08:25 First recess period starts at 10:05 and lasts 15 minutes. Second set of classes for the day starts at 10:20 Lunchtime starts at 12. You spent 25 minutes in the dining hall and then another 20 on the playground. Third set of classes starts at 12:45. Final recess of the day starts at 14:25 and lasts 10 minutes. Then final set of classes and the school is out bell rings at 16:15. That makes for a total of 3 recess periods a day, for a total of 45 minutes. More if you also count the 25 mins spent on lunch in the dining hall, but I personally don't, since we had to follow rules and generally keep the noise and fun to an acceptable minimum.

You were allowed to leave the school grounds if you were a Junior or a Senior. Now I'm in college, and you get so much freedom that it's unbelievable. Anyone in SPED back in the 90s likely remembers that we had those extra standardized tests (or something like that) and they would deny us recess to do them. Basically we were a bunch of goddamn test mice.

Those tests are useless.. they do not benefit the children. They scope out possible Einsteins, but only make the students see how poorly they are performing or good they are performing under the state’s standard. When do they teach them actual math, physical health, etc? Physical education does not count... it is not even education just another recess. Students are smarter in many areas that those standardized tests cannot detect. If students need to do school work without understanding it at home then schools are not doing something right which is to have students memorize only and not understand the concept. Once you understand a concept it can be applied everywhere regardless of the data you use or you can evolve on that concept to touch on things not yet figured out- like actual successful mathematicians and scientists have done before the age of schools and where independent study was the only option

James Wood's plan to remove recess was tested by the government in this episode. However, as the kids had no way to alleviate their stress, their scores went down. This proves that his idea was very wrong. I mean has he ever considered if snow was permanent they'd risk hypothermia, diphtheria, plants die, animals die?

You know, elementary school was the only time my district had recess. In middle school, it was 20 minutes of your lunchtime out on the soccer field with no balls or anything and in high school unless you're a senior who can leave school early, you don't go outside at all. This is actually pretty accurate lol

Uhm no . The point is people and children need breaks to digest information. I once failed a test because I spent like 8 hours aday on the weekend trying to memorize Spanish info. I was so fuckin fried I couldn't remember anything. I failed. Few weeks later I did the studying very casually and took breaks and relaxed and did it slower over a corse if a week instead of cramming in weekend. I got a fuckin A dude. Also there are many problems in my life I can't figure out unless I take a break from it. It's just psychology
