I am a commercial Avocado grower in Southern California, a couple of observations. That tree was definitely in poor shape, it had not been watered for some time, leafs were droopy. Ground should have been moist as well, otherwise the dry soil will take all moisture away from tree. Clay soul not the best soil to plant Avocados in to as they retain the moisture too long, and may cause Phitophera (root Rot) something Avocados are highly prone to getting. Definitely apply sun block, but don't apply to leafs, as this will inhibit photosynthesis. Also don't make a barrier to hold water against trunk, its best if you water slowly, small amounts and frequently, but allow soil to get dry so roots can take in oxygen, between irrigation. Otherwise interesting video.

@Salvador Dominguez What is the best way to grow an avocado tree in Zone 7b? Do I need a greenhouse?
@salvadordominguez5925
@salvadordominguez5925 5 жыл бұрын
@@rd4469 Avocados are native to the Southern part of Mexico and Honduras. They can tolerate temperatures as low as 30* Fahrenheit, but much lower than that they will be damages. Lower than 27* for a few hours will kill it. So a Hothouse would be the only option. Hass likes to take up space, GEM is more upright and a smaller highly productive tree. Not sure if they are available to general public. Hope this helps.

Gary's Best Gardening would be cringing like mad if he saw this video. Compost is not the home of roots...."soil amendments should go on top of the soil." Many things: I have never heard CA has mostly clay soil. I am sure it varies widely. Here in Pasadena my soil is almost pure sand. Avocados need excellent drainage and therefore sandy soil is actually a benefit as long as you water enough. I have walked through avocado groves in Fallbrook and put my hands in the soil.....super sandy and loose! I really think this video should be updated or taken down. I spent two years growing avocados trees using bad advice (like this video), and my trees died or almost died. Now I am doing it right and they thrive. Sorry be so critical, but avocados are not easy to grow and I hate for others to fail because the information they received was not accurate.
@Sigmund1924

My thoughts exactly. This guy is on one of Gary’s lecture videos from Laguna Hills nursery selling his needless product. They need to get on the same page since Gary says decaying matter should only be placed on top in the form of compost and mulch. He pretty much did everything incorrectly. My avocado trees are thriving and I followed none of the advice given here.

I have a young avocado tree growing in a pot in my window. I started it from the pit of one of the best tasting haas avocado's I've ever eaten. Why do I have to graft - I mean why wouldn't this bear fruit one day? Also, my tree is bent towards the morning sun -- should I rotate the pot each day so the tree naturally grows straighter? Or give it a support rod? I never thought about sunburn until I watched your video and would rotating the pot be a good idea to prevent that, until it's large enough to go out in the yard?

I read or heard somewhere that it can take up to 15 years that right? Should I just buyHey small avocado tree from a nursery. But I don’t want it to grow too tall and I’m thinking of keeping it in a pot. Any suggestions please

Hi, This is Kate, greeting from China. I brought Hass avocado from New Zealand to China 2 years ago. The same problem occurred with my first tree in New Zealand and my second tree in China. The leaves got withered on the top of it, and it was starting with the leaves from the bottom of the tree, (which makes me feel headache). I planted them in the pot inside the room, watering them regularly. Could you please tell me where the problem is?

If I don't get out of my rental property by the end of summer I'll be putting some in the ground for the home owner to keep. I'm hoping to find a house and start their the more property I can locate the more fruit trees I'll be growing. I also plan to grow Paw Paw and Mulberry as well as a big list of berries. I've got an indoor lemon tree doing amazing and I'm going to start another avocado in my compost this time. Last time suspended in water it never sprouted.

First, please water the poor tree! Second, Take all of your mixed dirt out of the hole. Next use a drill with a long auger bit and drill as many holes as you can into the bottom of the hole. If lucky you may hit a different layer of soil that will aid with drainage. Now fill the hole with mixed dirt all the way to the top. Take the tree out of the pot and set it on top of the hole. Mound dirt around the tree. After watering the tree may sink a few inches but will still be above ground level. Planting an avocado the same way as a rose bush cost me several trees due to root rot.

Thanks for the most important tip for planting an avocado tree. I learnt it the hard way by losing an excellent plant! The top of the soil that the plant comes with must never be inserted beneath the surrounding soil or the plant will die! Now I usually leave about an inch above when planting to compensate for eventual settling in the hole.

Hello Giuliano Supriano, It's a compromise on newly installed trees... without a stake, many would break in half without support. But by the 2nd to 3rd years, the tree, with selective pruning, should grow such that the underlying trunk and branches can support the weight of the branches and fruit (fruit may need to be thinned out as well to keep the load manageable in the early years). With the annual Santa Ana winds that blow through Los Angeles, I am confident that most my trees would not survive the winds in that first year.... Also, checkout all the fruit groves with their newly installed trees... all staked, regardless of fruit tree type. Reason: To ensure the tree grows in the right direction, standing straight, with a balanced branch structure that can support the most amount of fruit for the longest period of time. I hope this helps and makes sense. Charles :-)

Although clay retains nutrients well - once that soil is spent it is virutally impossible to get nutrients back into it. Keep in mind there are parts of California with Mammals, even dinosaurs, buried in thick clay that are still preserved to the point of where you can cook thier meat. I'd be interested to see another tree planted along side with no added soil supplements.

Hello CutoDracon, The best time for heavy pruning is late winter. Light pruning can be made following your avocado harvest. I will be doing several pruning, training, etc videos in the upcoming months. Be sure to subscribe so that you do not miss them! Also, here is a related video relating to pruning: kzbin.info/www/bejne/o5vQppKnh92YsJI Sincerely, Charles :-)

Your instructions are very helpful. I'm right here in Los Angeles as well, and I wanted to buy your products but couldn't find them. I went to Home Depot in Alhambra and asked for IV Tree Paint, and they told me if I want IV products go to a medical supply store! Whittier Fertilizer Company in Pico Rivera, a major specialty distributor also didn't have any IV products.

Hello Sweettravellumkan, I would recommend that you spray the entire plant (leaves, stems and branches) with IV Organic Ready-To-Use Spray (or purchase the can that can be used as a brush on, and then you can make a foliar spray by taking a teaspoon or two of the can product added to a spray bottle of water) to help keep the plant several degrees cooler during these long hot months. Please keep me posted! Charles :-)

When you water every other day, or even when you water the plant two more times in that same day, do you always use that fish fertilizer and super thrive formula everytime?

We live in Ohio. Will they grow good here?
@IVOrganic

Hello Debbie Jessee, There are so many customers I know that are successfully growing tropical & sub-tropical plants (such as avocados, citrus, bananas, passion fruit, etc...) in parts of the country that have a deep freeze each winter. They do so by planting in containers, and bringing them indoors until the chance of nighttime lows dipping below freezing have past, before returning the potted fruit trees onto their porches. If you want to attempt growing an avocado in a pot, I recommend that you go with a dwarf variety (that will more naturally adapt to a live in a container) such as: Holiday, Little Cado, and so many others... Please keep me posted on what you end up growing!!! Charles :-)

Hi charles ive seen some videos on youtube that if you add aspirin to 1 gallon of water that helps with shock when the plant is being repotted have you used this method ?

Hello Tom, I have heard the same thing, but have not tried it-- yet. One of the most popular products I have seen being used by the pro's is Superthrive. However, I do not think the product is organic... there is a lot of conflicting information on the benefits of this product. Note, the value of B1 on plants is not as well recognized today for relieving transplant shock, as it was once believed to be 10+ years ago. Maybe you can conduct a mini experiment on the response of transplanted plants to aspirin? :-) Charles

can I plant one of the dwarf varieties in a planter? what dimensions would you recommend for the planter?
@IVOrganic
@IVOrganic 7 жыл бұрын
Hello Markman63, Ideally you will want to gradually graduate the container from the size you purchase the tree (typically starts in a 3 gallon container) and eventually grow the dwarf variety in a 15 to 30 gallon container-- The larger the better. However, if you must bring the tree inside for the winter due to freezing winter (depending on where you live), you may want to not exceed 15 gallons for the ease of moving the tree. Also, be sure to use a quality potting soil (not garden soil or compost alone) as a potting soil better retains moisture between watering. I hope this helps! Charles :-)

I am hoping you can help. I have pretty much watched every video I can find with regard to my problem: 6-7 year old avocado, Fuerte has never fruited. My neighbors have avocado trees and I live within a few feet of an orchard. Not sure what I am doing wrong. My Santa Rosa plum also has never fruited??? Please help. Thank you so much. I am a big fan of your videos and watch every one. I have also purchased the fertilizer and the white wash.
