You bring such joy and information to gardening! Just harvested many persimmons off our tree and learned a lot about pruning it in Jan/Feb. Our persimmons have to become soft to eat so I usually peel them and trim all the edible fruit off, then mash and freeze them. Use throughout the year in muffins, smoothies, etc. The IV organic is a prevention product I really like. Thanks for sharing!

I've read a few books about pruning and can add a tip to this video. You don't want to cover the cambium tissue with any stuff. Doing so will prevent the tree from healing and closing the wound. This is so important that now department of agriculture decided to discourage everyone from sealing the wounds. So what you need to remember is apply the sealant carefully and leave the cambium ring alone. Second thing i can add is if there's a tear on the side of the tree use a chisel and try to make the wound look like a lens (). Do it with least amount of damage possible and you don't have to cut the bark to exact shape of a lens. If wood is infested with decease like fungi you need a more experienced guy to handle it since it might be necessary to remove parts of the wood and fungicide before sealing the wood with a product.

Fully agree with your comments. He should have done a cleaning of dead wood and bark. That would have not affected the use and advertising of the line of products he promotes.

Thanks for the tips. Last year I cleared an acre of wooded land and this year a see a gazillion persimmons starting. Mostly new trees. A few are new growths from stumps that were cut. I had no idea they were here but now I feel like I hit the jackpot. So, I’m trying to learn how to care for them. Some I will have to dig up and give away. Any tips on transplanting them?

Is there an advantage in growing my persimmon tree for the first two year or when they are at least 5 feet tall in a large pot where you can baby them before putting them in the ground?
@IVOrganic
@IVOrganic 6 жыл бұрын
Hello bubayou, According to Tom Spellman, spokes person for the Dave Wilson Nursery (one of the largest fruit tree distributors in the country) he said at a prior lecture that all fruit trees will perform better in-ground, better than in pots.... with the exception of blueberries. I too would recommend that you go directly into in-ground planting, where you tree will grow faster, with stronger & better stretched & anchored roots. Unless, the tree is really small, say less than 1-2 feet... there can be advantages to keeping the tree off the ground where pests such as snails, rabbits, etc, can consume the tree before it has a chance to become anything. Here is that Tom Spellman lecture: kzbin.info/www/bejne/g5rVpHtubpmEebM (go to 32:05) Charles :-)

I decided to remove all of the lower branches from my persimmon trees, everything below 6'. The coyotes were eating the fruit from the lower branches and leaping up and biting any fruit below 6', all of the fruit had bite marks and was being damaged. The coyotes were breaking the branches as they struggled to reach more fruit. I was worried the tree trunk would be broken and the whole tree lost from the coyote activity. I saw similar coyote damage in jujube and peach trees. Coyotes eat a lot of my fruit.

I have some persimmon trees here in N. Carolina and what I did was put an electric fence around it I bought on Amazon which is used for small farm animals. It won't kill them but give them a little jolt. I was having trouble with the squirrels and raccoons. After putting the fence up all that activity stopped. Be sure to build the fence to the hight of the intruder with the idea for them not to crawl under it also.

You look related to Jack Klugman. Thank you for the video BTW. I really wish there was more structured videos of at least the main American varieties. But each persimmon video just throws them all in together which makes it frustratingly difficult to choose the correct tree. There's not much info to find on the internet about this problem. You said to be sure to feed the trees in spring, summer and fall with an organic granular fertilizer for fruit trees. Does it mean to feed them 3 times a year? Thank you kindly.
@IVOrganic
@IVOrganic 7 жыл бұрын
Hello Kitacheeta, Congratulations on the purchase of your persimmon farm!! YUMMY! What variety (ies) are your growing? About feeding, it is recommend that you fertilize your trees with an organic granular fertilizer lightly spring and fall, with the most important feeding being in the summer.... with very little to no care (feeding-wise) during the winter months. The reason for the heavier summer feeding is because the plant is most active with the longest and warmest hours of sun... hence the most active metabolism. I do not have a company I can recommend for fertilizers, however, I am sure you will be able to negotiate a wholesale price with one of the distributors. Please keep me posted on the success of your persimmon orchard! Charles :-)

One of the most popular and least expensive ways of getting persimmon trees is as a bare-root tree. Available in early spring at a nursery or garden section of the hardware store. Bare-root trees are only available for a month or two, so keep an eye out for their availability. Better would be to ask the clerk when they are scheduled to be in stock, then mark your calendar for the event. Persimmon trees are usually more expensive than the other trees (peaches, plums, apples, etc...) so be prepared for the sticker shock. Buy as soon as they are in stock so you can pick the best one.

Sir could please give us a fertilizing time frame or schedule for persimmon trees? Thank you, Mike in FL (from Citrus Heights CA)

Hello Michael, For your persimmon, as well as most fruit trees, they are most active (growing, fruiting, etc) in the spring, summer and fall-- So feed your trees with an organic granular (which breaks down over 2-4 months) in the spring, summer and early fall. No need to fertilize in the winter when the plants metabolism is the slowest. Other good practices include deep watering, and allowing the soil to dry (never bone dry) between watering, mulching, and pruning in the late winter (after chance of frost has past) and again in the middle of the growing season (such as early summer) to manage size and maximize strong (not leggy branches) that will support the blooms and fruits the following year. Keep me posted on your persimmon tree success!!! Charles :-)

My persimmon is sending roots out and producing many more persimmon trees. I heard I must have cross pollinator. Are all new trees same "sex" as mother tree? Original tree has produced fruit, but not much. Would appreciate any help!

Hello Paula Shaia, The persimmon flower has both male (stamon) and female (pistil) parts; however some varieties are self-fertile and others require a pollinator. Most plants benefit from cross pollination between related, not identical varieties, of persimmon. Do you know what variety you have? Did you grow the tree from seed, or purchased from the nursery? Most nursery grown trees are grafted with known varieties proven to offer quality fruit, on a rootstock that offers disease resistance and controls the tree's height. If your tree is grafted, then those root sucker trees are just more rootstock and will not produce fruit or will produce an inferior fruit to the grafted tree. I hope this helps! :-) Charles

Should I cut roots that feed to baby trees? Aren't those little trees taking from mother tree?
@IVOrganic

Hello Paula, Assuming this is a grafted tree that has been selected for producing quality fruit and good yields, the issues that prevent more fruit can be one or more of the following issues: (1) need for cross pollination with another variety of persimmon tree, (2) feeding your tree with an organic granular fertilizer in the spring, summer and fall, (3) watering method, such as deep soaking root zone approximately 2x per month spring and fall, and 4-8x per month during the summer, (4) pruning... covers the main concerns that come to mind. I hope this helps! :-) Charles

Hello Paula, You can soak the area where these baby trees are growing and pull them out of the ground with the hopes that some roots come out too. These starter plants can be used as the rootstock to other varieties of persimmons that you can graft onto them to make more delicious trees! Do not cut roots off the parent plant; rather, try to remove the suckers with very little to no damage to the parent's roots. Keep me posted on your growing successes! :-) Charles

Can persimmons grown from seed? I am in Swizterland and would love to try grow them in East Africa.

Hello Wam Dok, The answer is yes, however, seeds are like the children of the parent fruit. All children are different and unique. Similarly, the seeds will likely result in fruit with some variation from the parent, such as size of the fruit, sweetness of the fruit, fruit yields, and so forth. The varieties grown by farmers are typically grafted from the "one in a million" fruit variety is is considered desirable-- and all the ones planted by farmers are of the same identical genetics as the parent fruit by way of grafting (cuttings and air-layering also achieve identical fruit trees). However, you may have the "one in a million" seed that ends up being superior fruit to the parent. Additionally, be prepared to wait a long time for the seedling to mature to fruit bearing age-- which may take 5-10 years. Grafting, cuttings and air-layering mature wood from the parent will save years on the waiting to fruit time. Let me know if you have any other questions and good luck! :) Charles

Thank you so much for a quick and informative response, I really do appreciate. Amazingly I have grown diverse stone fruits in my backyard Garden in Nairobi, Kenya. I bought grafted seedlings from garden Center here in Switzerland and first fruiting is underway.... I have not had luck though, with persimmons, I may have to travel to Italy to get some seedlings. I find the air layering results amazing, I will definitely educated farmers in my rural area where I come from, this method is much easier than grafting. Do you have tropical climate all around the year in California? the reason why I ask is because you have tropical fruits growing outside.

Hello Wam Dok, It's my pleasure! :) Here is a video I did on a successful air layer earlier this year: kzbin.info/www/bejne/qIDNl2qCoc6Do68 Note, air layering can be used to propagate just about any plant or tree... Even hard to propagate by cutting trees (such as avocados and apples) can easily be propagated by air-layering. In Los Angeles, as well as most of Southern California, many tropical plants can be grown successfully as our winter night time lows are rarely at or below freezing. My growing zone is characterized as 10(b)-- Which is similar to many parts of Hawaii! The main difference (and there are others) is that it rains consistently in Hawaii, whereas not so much rain in Southern California unfortunately. Please keep me posted on your growing successes! :) Charles

Thank you again....very educative! could the air layering process take root without using that organic liquid stuff?. i mean only with just organic compost? ...What is the best season to air layer? Yes I will keep you posted about gardening passion......I cant wait to see the progress during my holidays in February 2017.

You are welcome Wam Dock! And thank you for the compliment! :) Yes, you can use just about anything for the "soil" in the air layer; however, moss works well because it holds in position better than compost (but compost can work too). Air layering works well anytime except the "cooler" part of the year when most plants metabolism slows down-- In the northern hemisphere that would be late fall and winter. If you have any other questions, please do not hesitate to contact me! Charles :)

Hello Kenny01fuji, Thank you for the clarification! The most popular persimmons originated from China; but yes, it was Japan that developed the most popular Fuyu variety! Thank you again for noticing that!!! :-) Charles

Persimmons originate from China then propagated in Japan and cultivated to have the Fuyu variety. A lot of things adopted from China through out Japanese history including written language and the curved sword.
