Just watched another Bathust race. It is truly the worlds best car race. It is hours of drivers driving at 95% effort but being 100% consistent, then in the last 20 laps it is madness of drivers driving at 120% of their and their cars ability, putting absolutely everything on the line and just going for it. It is a race where every year something unexpected and strange happens, today it was an echidna entering the track causing a safety car. The smallest things put cars out of the race. There is heartbreak, there is incredible excitement and it's all due to the mountain. What a race what a day. Love it.

The Bathurst 1000 race is the king of Australian sports. There's no weekend like it in this country. I've driven around that track many times and what you see on tv does it no justice. It's a really difficult circuit, extremely unforgiving. While driving around at 50kph, I just couldn't imagine doing it at an extra 150kph. This circuit commands your respect, and if you don't respect it, you're in trouble.

G'day Ian. Mt Panorama was originally a scenic road, all dirt. Back in the late 1920's, there was an application for a race track at Bathurst, which the local council, at the time, said no to, too noisy, attract the wrong type of people, etc. So an application was put in for a " scenic drive" up and down Mt Panorama. The same local council thought that it would bring tourists and their money into the area and agreed to a "tourist track" to be built up and down the mountain. By the time the track was finished the council members had changed (elected by the people of Bathurst) and so much money had been spent, that nothing negative was ever said about it (as far as I know) and "the rest is history". It's amazing what you can find out by talking to the older locals. Love your work.

161 laps of sheer torture at break neck speed...and it's SO awesome to watch. As an Aussie bloke I can honestly say there are two weekends in Australia where nothing else matters - the last Saturday in September for the AFL Grand Final and two weeks later, the Bathurst 1000. It's an epic time of the year. The other 50 weeks are boring as hell!

One of the things that no-one ever realizes about Bathurst is the height drop in the Esses when you start coming down the mountain. It is a massive drop into each corner, you cannot see the exit of them, hell, you can't even see the apex of the corner most of the time, all at 200k/h... Each corner drops abt 3m or more in height, it is insane even at 60k/h...

The rally bad crash at 7:07 with the Pepsi Max car was Chaz Mostert. He got pretty badly hurt in the crash but came back to racing as soon as he was well, he gets props for that. I live in Bathurst, and theres a couple things i can tell you: #1: Camping at the top of the mountain, that bit where you see literally 60,000 people standing at the fence going past the grate, and stumbling down on Sunday morning, hung over to within an inch of your existence to watch 7 hours of racing is top 3 best things you'll ever do with your life. #2: i've done some amateur racing on mount panorama, and i've done that bit Larko spoke about down where you need to "be a balarina", specifically where you leave the esses, get your drive wheels back on the ground and immediately mat it all the way to the brake point for forrest elbow, in a 6 speed LS1 SS Commodore (4 door version of the 2005 pontiac gto) & i promise you, with half the power of a supercar, it takes every fibre of your being and literally screaming at yourself to hold full throttle through 2nd, 3rd & 4th gear down that grade. Beats any roller coaster. This is the best place in the world, and once you experience it, you'll never be swayed.

He explains it well because he is one of the greats of the mountain. A driver. This is the most stiring video in motorsport. IWrocker, you have to come to Australia one year for the Bathurst weekend. Classic cars racing, pro-am racing, GTCup etc. This track is actually a public road, there are houses and farms on it. Seeing the track on the screen is one thing, driving it is another universe. You simply cannot fathom the sheer scale of elevation changes until you see it with your own eyes. Come on down under, Im sure your subsciribers would have plenty of cold ones at the ready. You would have a blast. Also it's terribly pleasing to see Americans appreciating what we have and what we do, down under. America and Australia share an automotive motorsport traditiion and culture that's very close in nature.

Great that you have discovered Bathurst 1000 at Mt Panorama and Australian touring car racing. Pity you did not see the best of the best. His name was Peter Brock. 9 time winner of Bathurst 1000. He is famous for 1979 win where he won by 6 laps and broke lap record on the last lap, but he won it on 8 other occasions as well . He won the race more than anyone else and was well named as (and still is) the King of the Mountain. It wasn't just how many times he won. It was his style and the ease with which he seemed to do it that put him a cut above everyone else.

Until you've driven on this public road which becomes a race circuit you cant appreciate the climbs, how narrow the road is on your way to the top of Mt Panorama! The view IS spectacular! Then when you drive at the speed limit through forest elbow imagine going a whole heap faster and trying to turn 1.5 Tonne through those twisty turns, its INSANE! Once your through the dipper. Can you imagine 300KLM/HR! down Conrod and into the kink and pushing on the brake so hard to pull that 1.5 T rocket ship up for the corner? Now your back in your everyday drive as you leave the circuit/public road you've done it once, imagine doing that for another 160 laps. All day long, in the heat, the rain the cold. I believe THIS is the race that stops a nation! If your heart hasn't got a good strangle hold on your back teeth on race day you aint livin!

Did you know Conrod Straight in the old days did not have the chase in it. Hence conrod straight. Even Ford top loader gearboxes siezed main shaft gears causing racers to drill extra holes in them to supply enough oil. Then some smart guys came up with the Hollinger gear box. Love your stuff mate. Regards Ken

This is Australia’s premium car race, haven’t read all the comments but the track is actually a road with a proper speed limit when racing isn’t happening there, which residents use as there are houses within the track they also do a 12 hour race there as well , Conrad straight was once longer than it is as the right hand turn at the end was put in a few years of ago, if you ever come down under do it when the race is on

Not long now the ads for Bathurst are on Aussie TV this week. Larko is the best at technical commentary.

Ian when you get a chance (YES I did say when not IF) to come to Australia and NSW. you will have to set aside a Day or two to go to Bathurst and drive around the track, it is a every day normal road, and any picture or thoughts you are imagining about the truck will be totally transformed to just how epic this track is, you cannot put it in words. Larko has done the best attempt.

Great video. Larkham's first (well, not exactly) touring car race was co-driving with Brock in the Sierra RS500. Sadly the engine blew up in Brockie's first stint. He ran open wheelers and touring cars; even had his own team for some years. He drove Mt. Panorama from mid 90's to mid noughtie's. As a technical commentator, he's great. Funny bastard, too. Actually, all the commentators rag on each other. *edit: If anything is inaccurate, someone will let me know. I'm getting old ;)

This video sums up everything I feel about Bathurst. Have watched nearly every single race live on TV since they started broadcasting live in NZ in the 80's. There is something special about that track and Larko sums up the emotion that Bathurst gives in that video perfectly. Every time i watch this, without fail, I get chills and a tear in my eye. Just magic.

Bathurst at 60km/hr (37 mph, legal everyday road speed limit, and you'd think that was slow) in a Toyota Corolla is a real eye opener. It's a bloody tall mountain. One of the best drives I've done. Had to do it twice and then again on the way home. I don't know how the guys do it at speed, they don't get to appreciate the view! Every Aussie should put conrod straight into their nav app and click get directions when anywhere near Bathurst.

Larko is a top guy, great driver, made his own way to the top through his own talent and grit, no rich parents buying a drive, he was just a country boy refrigeration mechanic with a couple of mates to help work on the car. The sort of guy who, even running late for a compulsory press conference, was happy to stop and chat to fans

You should check out the Holden A9X Torana at Bathurst in 1978 and 1979, especially the 1979 performance driven by Brock...that car was an absolute classic...it is a beautiful looking car...

As I told you there is nothing like an expert commentator who has been there and done it to explain Mt Panorama, he says it like it is, this mountain will eat you alive if you get it 1 Millimetre wrong on one lap, and this being a 6 hour race it is full commitment each and every lap. Glad you enjoyed it mate I knew you would, so lets go it is now early morning Sunday my time and already people are up even though it is just after 3 AM walking around chatting catching up talking it up and preparing for the day. I can smell bbq's fired up breakfast being cooked and the sounds of the mountain waking up wildlife still making themselves heard and waiting for the sun to rise. Enjoy your Bathurst day mate I sure will. Keep Safe Keep Strong

Larko is a four wheel legend but they also used to run motorcycle races at Mt Panorama, most notably during Easter long weekends. Two riders died in 1980, the last year I went to the event. 'Fun' facts: Forrest's Elbow was named after Jack Forrest, a motorcyclist who scraped his elbow away during a crash on the corner. Hell Corner is so named because of a tree stump at the apex where it was believed motorcyclists who misjudged the corner would die.

As an Aussie, Bathurst is a public road when not being used for racing. I’ve driven around this track in a supercharged v6 commodore, that top section of track is absolutely mental, your coming to the top of the hill and it looks like the road just ends and then it’s sky beyond, until all of a sudden you come to the top and it immediately just spears down and then into a sharp right turn and then a sharp left turn, and let me tell you, it’s scary and aggressive trying to get around those corners even at 50-60km h. Let alone the 150-200kmh the race cars are doing it in.

I was right there, it happened right in front of me. I've actually got a pic of him just as he clipped the first wall. I didn't realise what had happened until I put the camera down and saw his car up in the air. The distance that car slid after that was amazing, he ended up at the entrance to Forest elbow. I actually thought the worst about what happened to him and the marshalls in that box he took out, glad they were all OK in the end

@@timjohnun4297 it was one of those crashes where you definitely think the worst, but yeh the car just wanted to keep going hey, marshals were bloody lucky no doubt . you were on the scene thats pretty cool 😎👍🏼, I'd love to go watch it live, atleast once

My mate was the cameraman who caught the crash as it happened. He told me afterwards it happened so quickly he had to move the camera ahead of where the car was to keep up. I was actually commentating qualifying for the local radio station and as the crash happened nearly dropped the f-bomb live on air. What the clip doesn't show often was the three flag Marshalls diving out of the way as the car ripped the roof off the marshalling stand.
