Yep soon as contact is established swallow their space and apply constant pressure as this makes it incredibly difficult for the offender to "mature" any punches, kicks etc but timing is key as there is such a thing as the "right move" at the "wrong time". :)

See I agree with that as well.. I do think controlling the distance by taking a step can sometimes be the thing that creates a good wedge when we take it.

Why are there so many 'we never' statements in Wing Chun? -We never turn our punches over -We never back up -We never block -We never break the mother line We as Wing Chun martial artists need more freedom to express ourselves.

Because they never fought a Muay Thai fighter . Look I get the concept yes please strike 1st and I love Wing Chun but if you ain't a boxer you have to enter with caution . I wanted to learn Wing Chun but due to one class a week it will take forever to learn . And you have to take hits as well , if you think for one second you ain't gonna get hit you are surely gonna lose the fight . I used to be heavily gutted like the student old lives matter that man ain't gonna win nothing on the streets unless he gonna beat on a drunk . I'm not trying to be mean spirited but it's a fact how many over weight MMA fighter's or martail artists do you see out there ? This fighting world ain't no joke . You either train for combat or you don't. I'm still a little over weight and I question my ability as well . But I do condition my hands with Iron Fist and Iron Palm so if I do connect a really good hit I'm trying to break bones . If you think someone gonna leave their arm/hand out there for you , just go to Disney land and walk in peace the best you can to make gain it hurts . Peace ✌

@@SakanLam ok I guess you didn't understand what my comment was . I never said Wing Chun was useless it does have it's place . Myself I love the concept of it and yes I wanted to learn . But re-watcha the fight he didn't keep charging in either . But weight is weight why else do you think they have weight classes ? I don't consider myself as a martial artist . Like knowing history or why that style involved and what it is today . But knowing what I know now Wing Chun wouldn't be my go to art . Put a Thai fighter and the Wing Chun practitioner in the street's with no referees because they were both limited what they could do in a ring settings . I'm sorry but I put my money on the Thai fighter ....

@@brianrahuba6919 Nope I didn't take it that way. I don't think Wing Chun is useless either, as I'm a practitioner of it. What I'm saying is, Wing Chun guys don't apply it enough through proper drilling, sparring, or pressure testing. We both can agree that Wing Chun has it's place and effectiveness, but you gotta get a bit dirty and experienced getting punched in the face while using it.
@brianrahuba6919

@@SakanLam agreed like I said I would love to learn it . But your 100% correct no sparing don't fight out of your art . But if someone can weaponized is it can be a deadly art . It's fast without a doubt I'm a big fan of it but where I live it's not popular but the only school I was able to go to was one day a week . And no art 80 dollors a month for 4 classes ain't worth it . Even Muay Thai two schools in my area but once they see what they have to endure to condition their body and shins they are out the door . But it is a real combat art for the ring and street's and most Thai fighter's will fight any other art's just for the challenge . But those trapping drills in Wing Chun are bad ass to watch .

Yesterday I sparred with a very high level wing-chun practitioner. He's been practicing for 30+ years. I was stepping back and countering a lot and he told me I was giving him opportunities to kick by stepping back. Because you are in motion you cannot defend. He started to combine his kicks with his hands and I could literally not do anything. This was the first time I could not get away with stepping backwards.

That's because you are not used to backing up. I run BACKWARD everyday. By running, I mean running, not stepping backward. LOL Watch Mohammad Ali's videos. He could run forward, backward, sideward, .. anytime he wanted. He could change direction any time he wanted. People these days focus too much on power and handwork and totally forget about footwork. There is a Russian boxing coach who is teaching the fundamentals of boxing. He teaches how to NOT be cornered by step sideway. Being able to have lateral movements during a fight is very important.

Agree largely with your assessment. My teacher told me to take a small step forward to intercept the attack, then use the arms to dictate if you are pushed backwards with Tui Ma (退馬). It can be dangerous against taller opponents but can be learned. The other measure is how quickly can a practitioner recover from stepping back to stepping forwards (from Tui Ma to Seung to Seung Ma (上馬)). In terms of backing up... running away from a more skilled fighter for survival is another option.

I’m going to offer up the scenario that you might want to pull the arm so that he steps forward is when there are multiple opponents and you want to pull him between you and the attacker coming up behind you. The strike to the throat gives you the shock to his system that lets you manipulate him into moving forward.

I would ADD that every step is a kick in the opponent legs.... wingchun is about making 3 things in one move... step is a kick in their leg while parrying an attack with one hand and while attacking with you other hand... in the example of a pak punch...your side stepping should be a forward sidestep attacking his leg to close the gap for more punch... footwork is 70% of combat; power come from your footwork, balance aswell, gap closing, keeping contact and disrupting your opponent's balance, power and vital space... all that is done with the footwork, and every step is kick to disrupt opponent footwork, that's includ knee strike aswell.

There is a recent video of Bill Superfoot Wallace, as an old man now showing this younger black belt guy sideways fighting. The younger guy even with a black belt is gone before he can throw a punch with either hand. And Bill figured it all out on his own with decades of training in all kinds of different styles of fighting. What makes Bill stand out now is he is funny as an older guy, extremely good, and still willing to help train others when ever he can.

You can probably do stutter steps backwards and lunge back in with multiple opponents. Faster footwork = faster punches so it can be done. I love stutter steps backwards where you fake step back but then quickly lunge in, for dodging a hook and retaliate, but it can be scarey seeing a fist wizz 1 inch away from your face. And yes it is easier to intercept the punch instead of dodge it. But that quick little stutter flutter out and back in step works great sometimes.

Because then you have to resort to just backing up again again until you engage them in some manner to stop their attack. Plus there no need to jump back in order to move out of the way. And wing Chun is very much about the conservation of and efficient use of energy.

Izzo I do WSL WC. I love WC because I’m a nerd and professional so I need my brain cells and face unmolested. What can be done to WC to make it more relevant? Not talking about bolting on bits from other systems but something that builds on the WC principles? Otherwise it’ll become like HEMA o r I guess EEMA. Nothing wrong with that off course. Clinch or grappling seems to be the next step in my mind because that’s the range you’re in. Seeing you have a wrestling background have you give it some thought?

@glenncummings8115
@glenncummings8115 Жыл бұрын
The reason wing Chun doesn’t back up is simple. Lack of mobility. WC doesn’t work at range because of lack of mobility. WC gets beaten when chasing their opponent because they can’t keep up …..because of lack of mobility. They don’t skip or train to be light on their feet, they train to be grounded with limited mobility and then train exclusively for a range that requires mobility to maintain. WC is a limited style with limited application in a limited range. WC with mobility could effective, but 99% of schools don’t train mobility comparable to other styles, but seem to be in denial of this obvious flaw.

Gave a like.. always tune in. I do have to disagree though. Reason being.. think war. You let the enemy come at you just over the River n then you shoot em down. Counter styles like wing chun are great to use the distance and destroy balance. Before hitting sometimes even. Idk.. thoughts to think about.
@TommyWingChun
@TommyWingChun 8 ай бұрын
I can answer this question without watching the video . Yes it is true that you aren’t supposed to step backward and that’s because you want to maintain your root like a tree but instead of backwards we push forward. In pak Sao drills you train not to blow yourself back and maintain your position. when defending against strikes, the idea is to break structure when you close distance you want to drive them to the ground , it’s like a train you can’t stop a train, you keep pushing forward . There’s striking , arm-locks , throws . Wing chun there redirected force and a transfer of moment
