While I loved Yeezus, I liked this video anyways because these guys gave a detailed and supported opinion that proved some good points. However, the reason I loved Yeezus was because: 1. It pushed the darkest aspects of MBDTF to an insane extreme. 2. It gave a huge middle finger and scream of escape to everyone who was trying to tear him down and dismiss him. 3. It challenged the music listening world as a whole from hip-hop traditionalists to teeny boppers, parents, hipsters, priests, industrial heads, etc. It is by no means for everyone, and I respect the opinions of those who are not fans, but all I know is that I loved it. 9.5/10

MrPimmetjepom Death Grips is a really good group. The Money Store and Government Plates are high 8/10's and classics in my book. But Yeezus and Death Grips are different albums with different stories. Critically, Kanye can be a tricky artist to understand. His interviews can seem like gibberish, his music overhyped, and his ego making him an asshole to people that don't see value in him or his music. He just takes time listening to all of his albums and an understanding of context to get him.

Honestly I don't think Yeezus was just Kanye hopping on a bandwagon. For one thing, yes, in 2013 Death Grips were blowing up, but it's not like experimental hip hop was such an "in" thing that it would be worth copying on its own. Frankly, it's just needlessly cynical to assume Kanye was ripping off Death Grips. And for another thing, this album doesn't really sound much like DG and other noise-rap from the time. The production is noisy, sure, but you'd almost never call it cluttered. Death Grips songs are layered, filled with all kinds of noises and samples, and that's what creates the overwhelming sound that makes people categorize DG as "noise rap". Yeezus, meanwhile, is often highly minimalistic; songs like On Sight, New Slaves, Bound 2, Send It Up, even Blood On The Leaves, all have quite simple beats. In terms of vocal performances, Kanye wasn't just being weird for its own sake; really, the punchlines aren't that much more ridiculous than what was on MBDTF. Can you really argue that "Eatin' Asian pussy, all I need is sweet and sour sauce" is that much more groan-worthy than "So much head I woke up in sleepy hollow"? Yeezus is not Kanye just trying the "it" sound without really trying; it's him blending elements that were already part of his style-- the autotuned singing, the rebellious lyrics, the creative use of samples-- and cranking them up to eleven. Hell, you could easily argue that "Monster" is a precursor to Yeezus.

I like Yeezus. Here's why, the album plays with my emotions really well. The album gets me pumped almost immediately and throughout the album i can maintain that level of excitement. I think lyrically yes he is lackluster for the majority of the album but in my opinion there are times when he does shine. I think its a solid Kanye Album. I am huge Kanye fan and when this album initially came out i did nit fuck with it, but as time went on the album grew on me.

The album yeezus is quite brilliant actually... there is a cohesive underlying story arc that went over alot of people's heads. Keep in mind that Kanye not only does what he feels when he makes an album but he also plays off society's perception of him. It's a combination. He wholeheartedly wanted to make the album 808's & heartbreak as an artist but it also gave him an excuse to make it in light of the passing of his mother and the break up of his relationship with Alexis who was his fiance at the time. So I'm sure the feelings were very much real, but at the same time he played off the public perception of the state of emotions that people would imagine he was in. When he made MBDTF it was the first time you witnessed him embracing "asswhole" type of lyrics in a more direct way. It allowed him to play off the perception of his Taylor Swift moment the year before when the whole world hated him. Yeezus is a character that he played to go with the theme of the project and the time period of his life and aspirations. He played a character. I understood this more when I went to the Yeezus tour and was blown away by how it came off almost like a broadway play on a Walt Disney stage, which was a mountain by the way lol. But anyways he wore a mask, which he takes off when Jesus walks to the stage, at that moment is when Kanye takes off his mask as if to symbolize his enlightenment. The rest of the show proved that because after that point he ended the show with his more happier songs. Now let's get back to the cohesiveness of the story in the album... Kanye had a theme of minimalism for the album yeezus. So while at surface value the lyrics definitely come off as maybe some of Kanye's most simplistic rhymes ever, the genius lies in the underlying messaging of the story that I found very entertaining. The entire album is infact an allegory depicting the tragic fall of the "Yeezus" persona, going from the strong hard hitting angry, obnoxious, egotistical tracks On sight, Blackskinhead, I am a God, New Slaves. Then, it shows the inevitable tragic fall, like something straight from Aristotle himself: Hold my liquor and I'm in it deal with Alcohol and Sex addiction in a way that shouts the typical glorification of the Rockstar lifestyle, whilst robbing it of its glory. "Had to stop at 7/11 like I needed gas/i'm lying i needed condoms don't look through the glass/chasing love and all the bittersweet hours lost/eating Asian pussy all I need was sweet and sour sauce". The distorted sound of the tracks and the uneasy schizophrenic sampling show the deterioration of the Yeezus persona as he "gets in too deep", The distortion of his voice throughout the song makes the listener realize the horror of what it is to embrace these aspects of life. Blood on the leaves is the climax of the album. Returning to the robot voice, to express the detached state that his sinful ways have led him to. This song is the Anagnorisis(similar to when Oedipus realizes that he's married his mother in the Greek tragedy). Yeezus has fallen low since he declared himself a god. Now you sitting court side/wifey on the other side/gotta keep em' separated i call that Apartheid/then she said she impregnated/that's the night ya heart died/now you gotta go and tell ya girl and report that/main reason cuz ya pastor said you can't abort that/now ya driver say that new benz you can't afford that/all that cocaine on the table you can't snort that/that goin' to that owin' money that the court got/all up in that alimony, uh, yeah - yeah she got you homie/'till death but do you your part, unholy matrimony." Guilt trip is a continuation of Yeezus' road to redemption, his catharsis(continuation of robot voice). It's Yeezus attempts to overcome his failed relationship and come to terms with his own fallibility. "Focus on the future and let the crew knock her" "if you love me so much then why you let me go?" (x3) Then, we get to the final stage with the last two songs: Send it up and Bound 2. Send it up is Yeezus coming to terms with what has happened and joyfully choosing to put it all behind him. "Reliving the past? your loss" is the beginning of the song, and it ends with Beanie Mann singing "Memories don't live like people do; they always 'member you/whether things are good or bad/it's just the memories that you had". At the end of Kanye's verse, he shows that the Yeezus persona has revived anew "Yeezus just rose again". Bound 2 is the happy ending of Yeezus. Yeezus, after that all he's endured: the greatness, the loss, the suffering, and the revival; he is now redeemed. He is no longer chasing the fame, the money, the superficial things, and he's found that "one good girl [who] is worth a thousand bitches" meaning that he has found a legitimate relationship with a woman, as opposed to all the bitchy girls that he's been dealing with. This girl gives him everything that Yeezus could ever ask for: companionship. The final lines of the song reflect their relationship. "It's not perfect but you know, ain't nobody perfect". They celebrate the small milestones of making it to thanksgiving and to Christmas; perhaps they can make it all the way to the altar, but first she's going to need to forget and forgive the person that Yeezus was. On the last two lines, Yeezus sums up the entire journey, on a number of levels: after this long-ass journey and transition that Yeezus has gone through, reflecting the verses of these raps and self reflection; or the verses of him against his demons; or the verses of the bible as they get married they're both tired; and sad for the way things are for people still living their life in despair; and in a metaphor and reference to the shortest "verse" in the Bible, they weep, just as "Jesus Wept." "Maybe, we can still make it to the church steps/but first, you gon' remember how to forget/after, all of these long-ass verses/i'm tired, you tired, Jesus wept." I wrote this long-ass comment in hopes that some of you may revisit the album yeezus, and play it straight through from track one with a open mind now knowing this information. It really is light years ahead of anything he's done thus far, even though personally late registration and 808's are my two top favorite Kanye albums, I understand the brilliance of Yeezus. Just remember to not take everything so serious because if it's one thing I love about Ye it's his ability to poke fun at himself in his music. He really hasn't changed, only progressed. In alot of ways "New Slaves" is a 2013 version of "All Falls Down." Same subject matter. And i never understood the fuss about him being hypocritical when this is not a new Kanye, he was hypocritical on his very first album. Acknowledging being hypocritical is one quality of being a conscious artist. You're human, humans are hypocritical. People forget that celebrities are human too and do the same shit we do only difference is that they're famous so they are judged more harshly. It's almost like you're a joke once you're a famous artist you lose the right to have an opinion... 2Pac was misunderstood by many to being hypocritical in a lot of ways, When you hear Kendrick Lamar say "I'm the biggest hypocrite of 2015" he's talking about himself aswell, not just to others. Kanye has always conveyed musically to me "hey guys, I'm one of you" He was always addicted to clothes... "things we buy to cover up what's inside".. Keyword "WE". Kanye has always been this type of social rapper. True concious artists relate to the people, and in my opinion Kanye has done that well for atleast a decade.

There's nothing really to "get" about this album, it's just bangers and Kanye wanting to make more electronic-based hip-hop like a lot of other popular artists have been doing nowadays (not many of them very well). On Kanye's first album (remember "Breathe in breathe out"?) he mentioned himself as a contradiction on his albums of "bullshit ice rap" and significant lyrics; Yeezus is following the same trend as his previous albums, just with a different style and less emphasis on good lyrics. I don't think the lyrics are bad, just that most of the time they aren't trying to say anything significant (with the exceptions on the album like New Slaves, Black Skinhead, etc.); but hasn't a sizable portion of hip-hop already been stupid-ass lyrics over trap-ass beats for decades? Young Jeezy never said anything important, nonetheless he's got some classic-ass hood-ass bangers. There's a place in hip-hop for shallow bullshit, and I think Kanye does it better on Yeezus than a lot of artists right now. The production on Yeezus is awesome, and while I'm bumping this album in the whip or seeing Kanye live, these songs are dope. Death Grips is one of my favorite bands, and I can still appreciate Yeezus, because I'm not expecting Kanye to scream complex, cryptic lyrics, and because Yeezus's production works nicely for its kind of hip-hop; MC Ride's lyrics and style wouldn't really work over these instrumentals. I don't only like this album because it's Kanye. There's also a huge catalog of MCs with complicated lyrics worthy of deep analysis and critique that I can refer to outside of Yeezus if I'm wanting socially-conscious rap, and even then, it's not like "New Slaves" should be glossed over like its lyrics are meaningless. There's all kinds of shit like this album that isn't criticized for not being deep enough; we keep expecting Kanye to push the envelope, and people's expectations of Kanye weren't met. The more time I've spent with Yeezus the more I've come to appreciate it for what it is, as hip-hop that just slaps. I can go stupid to this album all the time

Holy fuck Myke C-Town said something that really resonated and made me realize something: Yeezus has extremely dumbed down lyrics in comparison to MBDTF but the production was completely experimental, dark and FAR FAR left. It's almost like Kanye got tired of industry pressure right now to dumb down lyrics in order to sell records and his response was to comply, BUT at the same time to compromise for the lyrics he decided to scout producers like Daft Punk and Rick Rubin to make the most in your face and abrasive beats to give a HUGE middle finger to his critics. It's all about the subtle things he did on this album that make this album amazing to me, like how he put a random kids' choir sample in the middle of On Sight and the way the instrumental suddenly brakes and starts again on Blood on the Leaves. This album is not for everybody but what people need to realize is that everything on this album was cold and calculated to the point where you almost need a microscopic lense to get a real feel for the music. 9/10 IMO

The thing is, I didn't like his flow so I couldn't adhere the lyrics other than the ones like "MY DAMN CROISSANTS" or "I keep it 300, like the Romans... " And this is coming from a core Kanye West fan. I can't believe I undermined some of the excellence on this project. However, I don't think I will ever genuinely understand "I'm In It" (the first 30 seconds at least), and "I Am A God," however I do burst out laughing when I hear ' yo what up yeeeeezus.' Yeezus is an incredible piece of art. The production is a work of art and is like a toned down more sonically Death Grips album. With Kanye's typical rhyme scheme (which does have faults at points), and some fire production Yeezus is pretty great conceptually. 7.8/10

Blood On The Leaves is certainly one of my favourite tracks from the album, but I think the way West sampled Nina Simone's "Strange Fruit" was pretty insulting. The sample's from a song about a lynching tree with "black bodies swinging in the summer breeze" and West goes and makes it about a breakup with a long-time girlfriend he did molly with, who seemed to rat his out to the media and attempt to put down his reputation. Sampling a song which has such cultural and historical weight to it and then rapping "She instagram herself like bad bitch alert / He instagram his watch like mad rich alert" just seems to show how removed West is from his own context.

Kanye West isn't the first to do the industrial hip-hop sound. But you have to acknowledge the fact that Kanye West is the first to do it in the mainstream. It takes great bravery for such a famous artist to say fuck the radio. And he isn't copying Death Grips. He's going about the industrial sound in a very different way. He's not screaming about killing people, being paranoid, drunk, high, crazy, or other crazy shit like MC Ride from Death Grips. (I love Death Grips by the way.) The ONLY comparison is that they're both loud. Kanye is merely taking influence from art-hop like Death Grips, Odd Future, and Shabazz Palaces. And to all of the people saying the lyrics suck on Yeezus, only I'm in It and On Sight have questionable lines. He's not exactly spittin on Black Skinhead, but he gats his point across and it's a good song. And on I Am A God, his verse is really good. (Old n***as mentally still in high school.) On New Slaves, both of his verses are jaw-dropping. His verse on Hold My Liquor is also very good, talking about a broken relationship. People take two lines from the album: "Get this bitch shakin' like Parkinsons" and "Eatin Asian pussy all I need is sweet and sour sauce," and say all of the lyrics suck. And don't forget on MBDTF, on Hell of a Life, he talks about porn extensively, and raps about girls doing anal and gangbangs. He's not new to sexual rap. And back to the originality point. Since this is Kanye's Kid A or In Utero, or "artistic freakout" and people are saying he's not being original, are you forgetting that Radiohead took influence Charles Mingus, 20th Century classical music, Massive Attack, and other stuff for Kid A, and Nirvana took influence from a lot of aggressive metal and punk music for In Utero. The point I'm making is that nobody's entirely original. This is going to sound so snobbish, but I really think people just don't get it, or are too quick to criticize Kanye. If Jay-Z had put this out, nobody would have any problems with it. I'm ranting here, and I love you guys at DEHH, but I respectfully disagree.

I'm getting really tired of this "I miss the old Kanye" argument. Yes, Vintage Kanye was amazing and I love *The College Dropout*, *Late Registration* and *Graduation* but to say that Kanye isn't as terrific of an artist as he once was or that he's not as good of a man as he used to be is naive and ignorant. Kanye has always been arrogant and brash, and the only reason he did not put it on display very much when he was younger was as a result of his wonderful mother keeping tabs on him and so he could maintain commercial appeal as he was a new up and coming artist. In addition, *My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy* is as excellent if not superior to either *Dropout* or *Registration* and the only argument I've seen for criticism against *Yeezus* is the fact that it's different. Different ideas do not equal mediocrity just as much as it does not equal greatness. However, I'm not hearing the latter argument. All I hear is it's not the "Old Ye". It would be one thing if it didn't work, but it absolutely does. Music critics would be the first to tell you if it didn't (as few people - especially in the music industry - like Kanye West personally), and yet I hear so many people bashing those critics anyone else for praising it. Honestly, this seems to be a *Kid A* situation. Remember how the entire fan base was divided because it was "different" but all the critics loved it and now years later it is almost unanimously agreed upon that it's a masterpiece? Would not be surprised if the same thing happened again. It literally happens every time an artist tries to veer off in a new direction especially when the new direction being taken is a good one because some people just can't seem to understand the term "change". Coincidentally enough, the worst tracks on this album sound like they could maybe be Death Grips tracks (if you ignore the dancehall influences and the soul samples on Im a god and On Sight). No Death Grips song at the time sounded like Blood on the Leaves, Bound 2, New Slaves, Im in It, etc. Those songs take noise influence and infuse Nina Simone and Motown samples, dancehall influences and features, Eastern European classic rock, melodic autotune singing, etc. Kanye only sounds like he's copying them if you also think Death Grips is copying Saul Williams and Dalek. It's called influence.

Soooo here’s an update. In 2013 I liked a few songs off of yeezus and loved a couple too. Tracks like onsite sounded like garbage. 2018, this album has grown on me. It has aged like a fine wine. The biggest criticism this album received at the time of its release was lyricism and death grips. As for lyricism, that isn’t the point to the album. Yeezus is a character played out to the fullest in this album and the more you listen the more you get it and it pulls you in. Kanye embodies this persona so well. He even has his moments of amazing lyricism in this project nonetheless. This was not acknowledged by most critics at the time. Death grips. I see the influence, but it ain’t all this album has to offer. There’s Metallica and daft punk too. There is plenty more in here sonically that pushed boundaries that no other artist has or had. 9/10 Yeezus forever!
