J. Cole is an above average rapper. J. Cole is a average producer. His pride won't let him reach out to other producers beside FHD. I can't say he's produced one classic beat. Maybe Power Trip. Dude would sound incredible over some Apollo Brown, Premo, Just Blaze, 9th Wonder beats, but his pride won't allow him to admit his beats aren't great.

I agree with your statement. I don't think as a rapper he is anywhere in the league of Nas, Kendrick, Cube, etc etc. And as a producer he is nowhere near in the league of Primo, Dre, etc etc. He is above average but no more than that, however he has a tonne of fans so why does he need to change anything? What he does works for his fanbase.

Jay Anderson I don’t understand how anyone can be a die hard fan of anything and just pretend like something isn’t sub par. I fucking LOVE Kendrick, Andre 3000 and Kanye easily my 3 favourite rappers (I’m only 21 so the older rappers don’t hit me as hard as I didn’t grow up with their music whereas Andre & Kanye were the soundtrack to my childhood and Kendrick was the soundtrack for my teenage years). But, if Kendrick or Andre were ever to release anything wack, I’m not gonna sit there and try and defend it...with Kanye, he’s released a bunch of wack shit in the past few years, and I never defend it...Ye and JIK were just not up to par and I’ll never try and tell someone that it’s great just because I like Kanye...I don’t get this whole die hard fan/dick riding culture tbh...the worst are easily Eminem dickriders tho...
@augustrose54 жыл бұрын
Jay Anderson That's how I feel about Eminem die hards. I'm an Eminem fan but I love Nas, Pac, Wu Tang, etc. too and without them you wouldn't have him. And some of the songs he's released over the past 10 years are a no for me especially the ones he did with Rihanna.

Ian Smart but Cole was more consistent then. Cole is barely giving snippets of the old Cole on his new stuff. His best bodies of work were his mixtapes.

See i don't. I listen to that Cole for a youthful energy. I get more out of how focused and consistent this new Cole is. His projects aren't just about his own insecurity but about his perspective on the world (and he structures his songs in a way that makes that even better). Cole is more like the average rapper you know from the block, who's nice, but the most you'll get out of him is steady improvement, which isn't bad, but by today's standards he's too slow and considered boring -he seems like someone who's music would be appreciated more in the in the early 2000s. You don't (at least I don't) expect anything mindblowing from him, his subjects is stuff my mother told me when I was a kid (don't do drugs, don't go around having babies, show respect, stay outta jail, etc) it's basic shit to me, but when I hear people say he's "Woke" I'm like damn, my mom told me this.

I’m a cole fan but do feel his flaw is it’s too much him. Him on the beat, him on the hook, him on the verse. This is a solid project but i always wanted to see him work with NO ID or just someone else and a few features just to see him spar with somebody. The project is cool but again it’s not great and i feel like he’s just missing 1 or 2 things
@chrisringer57786 жыл бұрын
F.L.O.W. I'm also a Cole fan and I feel like this album and the last one had a message he needed to get across that didn't seem right for features. TBH the only song that I felt that could have used a feature was Motiv8 and the Cut off.
@Flow3496 жыл бұрын
Mon Gu Son he does just fine on it but i do think he needs a change of pace or just something different. I feel like conceptually this was Cole’s strongest project, and it had all kinds of flows and beats on it. The only two songs I’m not really fuckin with sonically are The Cut Off and Photograph. The way he explores different facets of addiction and brings it all back around at the end with FRIENDS and Window Pain hit me hard, and it’s particularly relevant to this generation of young black kids who don’t talk about their problems and just self medicate. It handles the topic of addiction respectfully, offers J. Cole’s personal solution to doing drugs, and sounds good while doing it, so I’m fuckin wit it

too be honest this is more well put together than anything he has done. the album has a nice amount of consistency for his message about drug addiction and vices. He dropped on 4/20 for a reason. Once an Addict (interlude) was an amazing song. It's main stream but it's cohesive. I needed something different and I like it.

I'm not a believer in listening to an album to force yourself to like but it really sounds like they listened to this one time and never returned to it. They couldn't even go into detail about the tracks they did and did not like.

J. Cole’s fans over sell him. J. Cole hypes himself up too much for his own good. No one else is good enough to feature on your album? What about his flow, lyricism, or storytelling is amazing? He is not a conscious rapper. He only has a handful of songs with very impressive themes or topics. Good album. Not great.

I'm not gonna talk shit about anyone of you guys. Ya'll are the best. But I do have to disagree. This is one of Cole's best albums imo. Sure what he's saying isn't necessarily "mind blowing" but since when did a concept have to blow your mind in order for you to learn something and enjoy it? I will say the first half is the weakest in terms of production and repetition, but the other half is some of Cole's best work. The way he flows on the tracks are amazing to me. Tbh, I think a lot of people downplay his wordplay as well. And whether you care about the concept or not, this is the most cohesive he's ever been with every track sticking to the topic of being addicted to something (with the exception of KOD. I just think he made that track to flex.) Yes, Cole can definitely benefit from a few features. I'm quite tired of it just being him too lol. But I still respect him for being himself. All in all I'm not mad that you guys don't like the album. (It's not very surprising. At this point you either like him or you don't.) But I just wish he got more props. Respect to all of you and no hate from me.

Honest question because I don't understand: Are you saying its one of his best because hes sticking to a concept better than he has in previous works? Because imo you can have the most cohesive album ever but still have it be boring. A weak first half and a good second half puts an album in average territory for me and the album concept wasn't executed so well that it elevated the album further beyond that ranking imo. Don't get me wrong, I like Cole, but just like with 4YEO I'm sitting on the sidelines wondering how people repeatedly call him the best yet are satisfied with what I think are only OK albums. If we praise his OK content as great what reason is there to get better? But that may be a different conversation

jaymmira Well while I said the first half was weaker due to the production and repetitiveness I don’t necessarily see it as bad. I still enjoy listening to it. But music is subjective so trying to convince you to like something you don’t enjoy is pointless. Now the reason I say this is one of his best is because of the consistency of the concept and the second half being so good that it outweighs the negative in the first half. But like I said, it’s subjective so we’re probably not gonna see eye to eye no matter how long we go back and forth.

This is probably Cole's best album, my favourite is still FHD though. I feel like he's playing it safe and not branching out to work with others that could make him a better artist. I've said it before and I'll say it again, Kendrick's Untitled Unmastered was a bunch of TPAB throwaways and it's still a better project than anything Cole has put out. Cole needs to go back to the drawing board if he really wants to have real Hip-Hop heads fuck with him (He probably doesn't care though).

Here come the cole stans disliking the video for no reason. PEOPLE, just cause they disagree with you isn't a good reason to downvote. Music is subjective, if they didn't like it they didn't like it, no need to get but-hurt. And its not like they said it sucked and thats it, they gave their own points and reasoning which I felt were viable.

People say Cole's biggest strength is being relatable then get mad when you say he's average. To relate is to be average. Too far above or below and you lose people.
