KOD is not boring. Nobody likes to actually listen nowadays. They dont listen to tracks over and over and really get to know the lyrics and the messages in the music. That's why you see lyrical rappers not getting big but people who make songs saying the same words over and over get rich from it.

Love that even when he's just spitting bars, he's still dropping knowledge on em. Cole World 👾
@philiprogers1305
@philiprogers1305 6 жыл бұрын
Estryus Flemming Lol! Yes bc one couldn't possibly drop knowledge off the dome right? But never said this was that. Freestyle is a subjective term. Most "freestyles" aren't without preparation. Do ya homework
@philiprogers1305
@philiprogers1305 6 жыл бұрын
Estryus Flemming As you just said it became commonly referred to as a freestyle. Meaning in the world of hip-hop today this is referred to as a freestyle. I get your argument. I feel a real freestyle should be from off top, but that doesn't change today's labels. To the original point of your argument I never even said this was a freestyle. I simply said he was dropping bars, meaning fire lines. Even if it were a freestyle off top, it doesn't mean someone can't slip in some gems of knowledge, rather than just flex.
@philiprogers1305
@philiprogers1305 6 жыл бұрын
Estryus Flemming Just spitting bars was more of a reference to the fact that it wasn't put together as a typical song. It's all about the lines. The context I said it in was that he is always dropping knowledge, where as other people tend to just flex about themselves or try to be super lyrical, written or not. He's always got a message in there. Nothing unremarkable about that. Google or KZbin freestyle and tell me what comes up. Lol. Again, I get your stance, but I'm not wrong.

The Oochi Wally Nas beat is a top notch beat to freestyle to that I've seen a couple artists do. Cole had that wordplay on this joint the way he said My cadence be/ the greatest we've seen/ since the late MC and the way he flowed through it was skillfully done. Nothing much I can say about Cole since I know his freestyles are always hot. Great Reaction on the Album Of The Year Freestyle Lost In Vegas.

Adding to the conversation about KOD’s reception, it is basically a satire which forces the listener to examine the flaws of today’s mainstream hip-hop culture. This will obviously be appreciated more by those who understand and have similar views, and depreciated by those who enjoy the current state of the culture or stand to make a profit from it.

The best thing about the internet age is that everybody has a voice. Coincidentally, it's also the worst thing. A thousand years from now none of it will matter anyway. The only thing we can do is share some piece of ourselves and hope that we've mattered to someone. That's what artists chase. That was a killer freestyle. Now, if you'll excuse me a notification for Kickstart My Heart just came in and I NEED to see it, yesterday. 😂

Hey y'all. Still loving your content, i always learn something when I listen to your vids, that's invaluable. On KOD being "boring" - I don't really see why you're surprised by that reception, tho. Being the learned music enthusiasts that you are, don't you feel like this response is just a reflection of what the audience for rap is in our days? To me, being a man of analogies as well, this is just like when you put the most interesting book of all time in the hands of an agitated, distracted 11yo kid: his first instinct will be to look at the book from the side to see how thick it is, and then he hits you with that "nah pops, I ain't tryna read all this, I got the latest Pokemon game on my nintendo whatever, i gotta catch all of dem shits" Diving into a well-inspired, layered piece of art takes effort and dedication, and people are just raised to be reluctant towards any sort of effort like that. It's just the culture of instant gratification: you gotta make a piece of art appealing with some bangers for them to even _consider_ trying to find out what you sayin. I believe it was the same thing with K Dot's TPAB - and interestingly, I think it goes well with your point about jazz music -, where both the very important story telling and heavy jazz influences were a bit overwhelming for many people. Those who committed to the effort actually know it's probably one of the best albums that was ever made, period (and notice I didn't say 'hip hop album', I said 'albums'). A lot of my friends told me that album was 'boring' too. (Which is a scandalous assertion to me, not gon lie) Of course KOD is album of the year so far, but you must have really paid attention to know it, which is not the case with a lot of people nowadays... And you know it lol (My bad if this is hard to understand, English ain't my first language, I'm French!)

Book of Ryan is album of the year imo. I think that album is far beyond KOD. I'd also put Phonte's album above KOD but neither Phonte or Royce are as big as J Cole so if I was putting money on it, I'd say KOD.
@SaintMu
@SaintMu 6 жыл бұрын
Tony Schimmoeller I shouldn't say "of course KOD is album of the year", to be fair. That's just my opinion. I loved Book of Ryan but I would disagree with you when you say it's "far beyond" KOD. I think Royce been nice for a minute, and we already knew he had fire bars, but when it comes to artistic intent, creativity, I'd go KOD. (Ironically, one of my favorite songs off Book of Ryan is Boblo Boat, featuring J Cole, but that's not why I love that song, it's mostly the beat and the nostalgic feel of it, plus that video is amazing) Haven't listened to Phonte's joint, but thanks for mentioning that, I'ma get to it right now lol

Eaque Johnson I like kod but personally Care for Me by Saba I think has been my album of the year, atleast personally. P.s. Lost in Vegas if you see this react to either busy-sirens or prom-king by saba. Prom-king is the best song on album, but i feel you have to listen to rest of album before listening to that song. The song is comparable to sing about me, im dying of thirst by kendrick.

I can agree that the song it self might not be so damn good, but the history coming out from the lyrics is what's makes it worth checking out when they already heard I'll mind 9 - cause then you get a way better understanding and feeling of I'll mind 9.

You're right it doesn't. However, when opinions aren't expounded on and there is no real in depth analysis on anything regarding the music besides 'it's boring'. That's usually an indication that there IS a 'group think', hive minded mentality present.

Lost In Vegas very true. In this video, you guys put into words what I’ve been trying to tell some of my friends about KOD for months. I also think that people love to hate on talent nowadays. The craziest thing is going to a comment section for a lil “insert name here” rappers new song and seeing a bunch of 🔥 emojis, whereas on a cole or Kendrick posts, you’ll see a lot of BS like “boring” or “overrated”. It’s like people refuse to expand their mind sometimes, and I really get scared for the progress of hip hop because of it. I’m not looking forward to more waves of rappers with overwhelming amounts of autotunes, ear shattering base, and saying a bunch of doo doo in between. But I’m glad at least guys like cole and kdot still carry the biggest followings.

Nik 117 i disagree with the first part of your statement, hip hop has become social music it's not that at it's heart. Production has excelled so much that people now can't listen to something without trap production or just beats that get you moving. 90s hip hop and earlier, the production was a loop just so the rapper had something to rhyme over and it was the lyrics that people paid attention to. And J cole has adapted his production to try and suit our hip hop generation, but again it has just become popular to just hate J Cole which I will never understand.

Nik 117 i know hip hop didn't start in the 90s but that's not the point I'm trying to make, the start of hip hop isn't necessarily where the love lies. If you are asked who is the king of hip hop or who is the best you would refer to the rappers like rakim, pac, hov, biggie etc. You might not think that but that is the general consensus. They are the people who helped the genre excel and move forward, but if that's the point you are making then you class the travis scotts and the migos as true hip hop more than the Coles and Kendricks.

Nik 117 fair enough if that's your point I can understand but then it also comes down to your personal preference of things, I dont need crazy production in order to enjoy an album and tbh it's odd that you say J Cole's album is boring because of production seeing as he uses trap beat influences on a few of his tracks and the majority of the album has good production, songs like window pain, the cut off, atm and many others have really good production but it is mainly down to preference in my opinion.

I’m only 17 but I grew up listening to jazz when I was younger bc my parents would listen to it and I feel like that exposure has opened me up to enjoying a lot more different jazz inspired music than my piers

Great analysis as always. I agree with you guys 100% I think because his concepts are so complex, its gets overlooked. Which is fine, because those that have an ear for music love what him and many others are doing. Once again, thanks for the great analysis, and I look fwd to some more reviews. Thank you for preaching about the lack of free thought in the internet, a lot of times labels are put on things and the masses follow. I feel that we are at a all time high of ignorance right now we need that FREE THINKING
