The Concepts of deep concealment, tradecraft, non-permissive environments, etc. really interest me right now. Maybe it's just the times. I asked myself what two guns would I choose for a minimalist, clandestine, "cloak and dagger" type of role. The Smith and Wesson J-frame was a no brainer and the Beretta Pocket Pistol line of guns (Tomcat) have always tickled my fancy. Both guns have a good track record with similar weight and foot print. Which one would you pick?

I love how the Tomcat is making a comeback with Beretta revamping them. The 1990's were a crazy times for pocket guns and lead to today CCW guns. Tomcat, Seecamps and the Keltec p32 that started everything.

This is a more real depiction of concealed carry. If you live a normal life, pistols like a G19 are great but all the time, especially in Florida. It’s hot. I don’t have a Tomcat, thought about it for years but my choice is a plain simple LCP. Carry an extra mag and I’ve got 12 + 1. I can have it on me everywhere, everyday. Many different carry methods but mainly in pocket. These type of concealed weapons can’t be beat for the need. Thanks

I learned this lesson in my ‘68 rookie year when we were required to be armed off duty. My service revolver was tough to conceal so I p/u a Colt Cobra (still have it), and later a slightly slimmer lightweight J Frame. In retirement I carry a 340PD w/my LCP filling in as my mode of dress dictates.

It’s amazing how many French officers led their troops “over the top” with .32ACP Rubys in their hands, during the Great War. Today we wonder if .32ACP is “enough gun” to run to the suburban quickie mart for a gallon of milk on a Saturday afternoon.

In its infancy, the CIA was set with a choice of firearm for their personnel. The choice was between the Browning Hi-Power and the Smith and Wesson J-frame. After a series of field trials, the CIA chose the J-frame. "It worked every time you pulled the trigger." No FTFs, no FTEs, no squib, no stuck cartridges, no tap-rack-boom, and no going out of battery when contact with the body. I'm a Cold War veteran, could not afford a true J-frame, so I bought a Taurus 859CIA (sandw 42 series clone), .38Special LDEWC-not hps.

I own both of these guns. Hands down, the J-frame .38 Airweight in the pocket is lighter and more comfortable than the Tomcat. Also, the .32ACP sucks in performance on humans. When I worked uniformed patrol, I carried a Tomcat hidden within my Velcro straps on my bulletproof, vest as my “Onion Field Insurance gun.” (OG Cops know what I’m talking about with that statement). But my “first-reach” back-up gun was a J-frame Airweight I carried in a pocket holster, in my left hand, while my primary duty pistol was in the right hand. Yes, at some points in my career I carried three guns on my person. (Don’t laugh, I was young). My primary duty weapon for various assignments over a 34 year career was either a Beretta 92FS, Hk USP45, M&P 2.0, Glock 17 and/or Glock 19. But always always always did I carry the Airweight j-frame as back-up, regardless of my assignment on the department. Always. The Tomcat…. Naaaah. Just in uniformed patrol duty.

Gets home, checks the feed, Admin and Wise Men both got pocket pistol vids..... came here first. Went through this dilemma in the mid-80's. Have revisited it over the years. The semi-auto carries better for me as the revolvers cylinder thickness creates a pressure point near my bursitis ridden hip. Semi-auto much more accurate for me also. Revolver more reliable and powerful. Sorta. If it had to be a J frame I would go with the 22mag. Beretta would be in 32... Would have to be Langdon version.

Forgot to say why. 22 mag gives extra shots with less weight and recoil, and is reported by many to be surprisingly accurate. Beretta in 32 because that's what it comes in.

I was always in the revolver is always the most reliable of firearms, until the day we had to train with our backup gun. Never had a problem until that day! multiple failures to fire... the firing pin was not broken on my S&W jframe!... About 11 rounds out of 50 failed to go off! I was using Rem green and white box 130grain FMJ rounds. I found out the primers on those were tougher than most ammo out there.,I have since replaced my main spring and the problem went away, But they can definitely fail and at the most inopportune time. lucky for me it was just embarrassment that was the injury. So many were firing that no one was the wiser except the scoring officer.LOL Made me rethink revolver never fails excuse....

After seeing a series of Active Self Protection videos, where John explains their findings after reviewing 40k defensive shooting caught on camera, that at no time in any of the armed civilian instances was a reload or malfunction clearance required, with less than six rounds fired (the mean average was three), is there a need for the average person to be carrying more than a pocket pew pew on a daily basis.

I’ve already made my choice. I carry a few different handguns depending on what I’m doing/wearing etc, but my 642 is always on me. I typically carry it appendix with standard pressure 158 gr lead semi wadcutters. My cylinder is cut for moon clips and I carry an extra clip of 5 rounds in my right front pocket. TK moon clips hold up very well and I’ve found they don’t bend up and cause binding easily. I’ve been carrying this setup for 4 years. I carry this gun on my ankle as a BUG when I’m at work (LEO). Yes, I trust my Glock. There’s a reason it’s the standard by which all combat handguns are judged. However, working the street has shown me that I can’t foresee all circumstances and things get western in a hurry. I like having the insurance of the j-frame.

Depending on how I’m dressed and where I’m going. When I can carry a full size gun it’s either the G19 or G30. My next go to is G43. I have owned a Beretta 950BS in 25acp. Before I use a gun for carry I put 500 rounds through it. Before I could put 500 rounds through the 950BS it fell apart in my hand. I returned it to Beretta they fixed it. Once I got it back I sold it. I then purchased a Beretta 21A the trigger broke. Now my pocket carry is S&W M43C. I would prefer that S&W J-frame over the Beretta.

Regarding your question to the viewers as to which which weapon system we'd prefer, & in what caliber? That a difficult question to answer, because the better calibers are available in the revolver, but the superior capacity & reloading speed is in the Tomcat. Ultimately I'd say it comes down to ease of use & length of experience with either weapon system; because at the end of the day, if you don't know how to operate one as well as the other, then you're gonna fail with the one you've got less experience using. ...Additionally, every pistol caliber pretty much just "makes holes," so shot placement is what makes the caliber do its job the best

The new Beretta Tomcat is nicely updated, but with today's technology, I really wish they would find a way to bring it out in .380. Regular .32 is not on my wish list. The new Frame S&W in .32 H&R Mag. is cool, but that ammo is simply too expensive...and S&W made a huge mistake in not offering that new (very nice looking) update in a 6 rd. .38+P...for me, just 5 is a full pass. Ruger .380 Max is the winner for me for this usage. Also the Ruger LCPII in .22 w/ federal punch seems to be a real option for this micro/micro pocket challenge. Even with several mags, this thing is ultra light and pocketable.

Don't get the LCP2 in 22lr. It has a pretty big design flaw. They extract unfired cases very poorly. If you have a dud round, good fucking luck getting it out. A SDVE smith and Wesson saved my life 2x over. But I retired it shortly after those two incidents due to a jam on the second incident. For stock models. I prefer the .22 mag j frame . It’s a couple of ounces lighter and the recoil is significantly less. Defensive .38 loads out of a j frame recoil far worse than a 10 mm in my experience. I would be interested in .32 hr magnum if smith reintroduced the 322 (scandium/ti 6 shot .32 that weighed 12oz) and put ports on it. I ported my .38 and the recoil is significantly more manageable (similar to 9mm in a full size)

In 1974 I was armed w/my issued Colt Detective Special when I became involved in a gunfight w/three armed robbery suspects & had to reload under fire. In the aftermath one officer caught a .45 round in the upper chest (no vest then & he did recover, albeit a year later) and the suspect died in the hospital. Our ammo then was the high velocity lead round nose. The .38 will do the job.

Great story. I’m glad the good guys survived. I’m surprised that the .38 lead round nose ammo was that effective. Lead hollow points, jacketed hollow points (were they available in 1974?), or even semi-wadcutters would probably be more effective because they are less likely to over-penetrate.

@jdnorris308 I have both and they both have different issues. The 380 caliber LCP2 is the one that jams a ton and had a jam that would get you killed if it happened when you needed it for self defense. As for the 22lr version, it flat out can't extract unfired cases. If you get a dud, you can't just rack the slide to clear the cartridge because the extractor slips off the rim 100% of the time and causes a double feed 100% of the time. I have even sent it to Ruger AND got a replacment slide and barrel from them, both slides had the same issue and when I sent it to Ruger, they claimed to not be able to replicate the issue. (Which is absolute bullshit because it happens 100% of the time no matter how hard or soft you rack it, they just don't want to admit that they have a flawed design for the 22lr version.)

Neither on of these pistols are without flaws. The Jennings works if it is perfectly clean and only likes certain ammo, even then it may not run a full mag. The 43c has issues with certain types of ammo swelling in the cylinder in can be very hard to extract. I think it depends on who you are, ( and preference) if you are a old lady or new ccw person the tomcat would be perfect low recoil and easy to operate.... or you still might want a revolver because you dont mind the trigger and you prefer the manual of arms and track record... 32 hr mag or 22 mag are great choices. the 110 grain critical defense and wadcutters are two good low recoil defensive options for the recoil sensitive if you have a 38 or you might be someone who trains alot with guns and wants to use them seriously for either edc or back up in that case the best hideout gun option would be a 38 or 357 magnum snubnose simply because it is more powerful... if there is a person right on top of you the recoil wont matter and the power level is a significant step up from a 32 even if you just go with a 38... you can also train out the negative effects of recoil and heavy trigger pull.

The tomcat is cool but it is so much bulkier and heavier than a .32 need to be due to it being direct blowback. Look at the kel tec p-32 is is much thinner (.75” to 1.1”) and lighter (6.6oz to 14oz) and the recoil is about the same because the tomcat is direct blowback. Now kel tec has its issues: bad qc (although both my p32’s are reliable) horrible sights, and lack of inventory. But I think if a more reputable manufacturer could make a recoil-operated 7 ounce .32 in the same form factor as the p-32 it could resurrect the cartridge.

Bobcat/Tomcat: 22LR simply for availability and the fact that most people are more likely to practice with it. I think if you load good .22 LR it’ll do the job just fine to break contact with an attacker. .32 ACP ammo is less available and more expensive. J-Frame: I pick a .38 Special for availability, plenty of factory load options and easy to reload for practice, and it’s an adequately effective cartridge with a lot of defensive ammo options. In an ideal world .32 Long or H&R would be perfect for most people with one extra round and less recoil but the revolvers and ammo are just not as available as .38 Special. Rimfire J-Frames suffer from heavy trigger pulls in double action so neither the .22 LR or .22 WMR would be my personal picks in this DA snubnose platform.

More available power in the j frame vs more rounds, smaller, faster shooting /lower recoil in the Tomcat. In 32 ACP you have to ensure the ammo chosen is as long as typical FMJ ammo or you risk rim lock as the 32 ACP is a semi rimmed cartridge. Hollow points must be chosen wisely because most are shorter than FMJ. The J frame doesn't care what ammo you put into it. I have to disagree with the choice of a hammerless J frame. I can and do draw my j frame very well without snagging the hammer and if I need single action it's available. I shot double action revolvers in competition for many years that required single and double action fire. Maintaining good repeatable double action accuracy under stress even at 7 yards is beyond the capability of a once and a while shooter. It requires dedicated practice to achieve and maintain proficiency. Shooters that aren’t going to shoot at least 1000 rounds per year are not going to develop or maintain repeatable accurate double action fire.

This is a very good point. The snubnose revolver is an excellent platform for a practiced revolver shooter: someone who has developed solid fundamentals on a Model 10 or a GP100 will be able to handle a J-Frame just fine. But a first timer will find it unpleasant to learn DA revolver fundamentals on an airweight J-Frame unless it's a rimfire model with an even heavier DA trigger. I also agree and think the models with a hammer spur are just fine. I put my thumb on the back tip of the spur and it draws from a pocket holster without a problem.

@@djYuz That's exactly my thoughts. When I carry my S&W model 60 357Mag I also cover the hammer spur during the draw and have no trouble with it snagging. Both the snubby revolver and small autos are great for CC but they require different types of practice. For a beginner learning to be consistently proficient at combat ranges with a revolver will require more practice.

.22 magnum is so much better than a 32 acp. i get out of a tiny barrel it loses power, but its a lot more Js

Tomcat if I was a cripple who could not handle the recoil of a Centennial. Better yet, a 9mm Ruger LCR. The .32 ACP round has poor stopping power and will not reliably penetrate a human skull, so is not worth considering unless that is all you can handle. The LCR is my 'always gun', while I might augment it with a Glock 17 or Ruger Redhawk depending on the situation.

Speaking from my experience playing with my Tomcat 3032 at the range or so and take it with a grain of salt. Please don't get butthurt. Tomcat, Bobcat, Allycat or those tilt up pistols are not for new shooters, the ladies or those people with grip strength issues for self defense. If you got big hands? You should probably choose something else btw. This gun is gear towards experienced shooters or gear toward we the gun people who just wanna play with guns. This gun isn't really great for fast rapid reload either. People always brag about the tilt up barrel right? "Tilt the barrel up so you will never have to rack the slide!". Think about this do you think you have that much time to tilt barrel up, drop a round in the chamber, close the barrel, insert a new mag and be ready after you used up your 7 or 8 rounds? Also if you're at the range and when the gun is hot do you want to touch that hot barrel? Nobody talk about "racking the slide" because the slide is very heavy and hard to rack back. This gun is more of the..."Get off me gun" and hope the problem end without firing or under 7 to 8 rounds. Look. My 3032 is my summer OWB 3'o clock carry gun for the morning when I do my morning walk and jog. Winter time I pocket carry my LCR 327. What about Spring? I carry my G19. Also when come to my 3032 it came with a manual recommendation not to shoot 73 grains.

Neither one. The Tomcat is in a relatively weak caliber; it does not have an extractor so with a dud round (admittedly rare) racking the slide is ineffective. 22 mag is also a marginal caliber. A J frame 38 special can be used with lower recoil ammo if desired and will be more effective and reliable than either of the handguns reviewed.

This is a toss-up, and it really comes down to personal preference and the individuals capability with a particular firearm. Pistol caliber discussions are more academic than real. I have seen more than 150 GSW victims, most expired over time, but seldom in a time frame that would preclude them from return fire. Other than .30 caliber plus rifle, or even .223, (and of course shotgun) it is seldom that rapid incapacitation occurs (other than CNS hits, brain, spinal cord) in pistol calibers other than .44 mag. Of these approximately 90% were torso hits, often multiple hits. Most opponents flee upon taking hits, and that is the real value of a firearms in self-defense. Regarding those that suggest head shots in a self-defense scenario...Really? Opponent is a moving target, you are dealing with elevated BP, elevated respiratory rate, adrenaline rush, the cone visual effect, auditory impairment (hearing declines, eyes focus on target), responsibility for each shot/bystanders...etc. Also, and this is my opinion... The first rule of a gunfight is NOT: "have a gun". It is: "don't get hit". Your personal logic in this video is a good method for an person to make their individual choice. Thank you sir.
