J. Krishnamurti - Brockwood Park 1978 - Discussion 2 with Buddhist Scholars - Can we live without identifying?
Summary:
Q: What is the state of the mind that is in the process of dying?
What is death? Is there life after death, is there a continuity? If not, what is the point of living at all?
Why is there the whole process of identification, my possessions, what I will be, success, power, prestige? The identification process is the essence of the self.
Is it possible to live in daily life without this identification process which brings about the structure and the nature of the self which is the result of thought?
Is it possible to be free of the "me", which produces all this chaos, this constant effort?
Can thought end? Is it possible to live a daily life with death, which is the ending of the self?

This channel is managed by the Krishnamurti Foundation Trust, UK, and by the Krishnamurti Foundation of America.
The role of the foundations was described by Krishnamurti when he said, 'The foundations will see to it that these teachings are kept whole, are not distorted, are not made corrupt. They will not give rise to any sectarian spirit in their activities... nor create any kind of place of worship around the teachings or the person.'
We maintain extensive archives of Krishnamurti's original works and all four Krishnamurti foundations are actively engaged in the publication of material in various forms.
Our videos contain thousands of subtitles in more than 25 languages, translated by volunteers from all over the world. If you would like to help us with translating subtitles, please contact us at digital@kfoundation.org

Another gem! Probably the closest K has come to showing a 'method' although it is not a method. He clearly says "Non-identification with sensation, with the senses is the key." He goes on to say that non-identification with anything...experiences, memories, loved ones etc. is the key. How does one do that? He says one must be attentive, listen correctly, be passionate about finding out, must enquire with an urgency, etc. Because the "root of the Self is thought."
@czupryndaniel
@czupryndaniel Жыл бұрын
The more of his talks I "attend", the more often I see him giving direct answers and "methods". In this talk, for example, he admitted that's a vipassana meditation. It's so mindful that he gives it a name AFTER carefully enquiring into the topic and making sure the listeners understood the enquiry. He also reveals a lot during talks with a lady called Pupul. She has a talent to make him say more than he wants to, I think 😂

You see through it without without becoming it. If you are sexual be aware of it..let it flower and wither away ...just be aware of it choicelessly like your hands moving from left to right and while it is happening so you see the whole truth of it and that perception and insight is its ending (very hard might need a few tries - well we got our whole life ahead of us). It is only when you become it or suppress it there is identification, choice, division, duality and conflict.

At the end of this discussion (exploration), I saw JK asked a question that if you identify with nothing, can there be love with your dog, wife, children etc. The Buddhist gentleman said love is bigger than compassion and compassion is towards the one, who are in sorrow. Mind plays so many tricks, since we’re conditioned with religion, scriptures and words..if we listen carefully to our heart without identifying with anything, we get the answer from within. Compassion is universal love. With all, nature, mankind, animals and all. 🙏🏽 Then mind repairs itself. The brain cells align themselves. Beautiful 🙏🏽 Sex won’t trouble if we don’t identify with the senses. 🙏🏽

am very grateful to the Buddhist scholar in that group, as his demeanor and his holding on to his accumulated beliefs/knowledge in resistance to the bare truth inquired by Krishnamurti, give me the liberating confirmation from the sometimes occurring thought, "I should practice a path like Buddhism" which I don't but only do look, observe and inquire thoughts, concepts, beliefs of how reality 'should be' according to accumulated ideals and then drop and end them. thanks to those who posted this magnificent, brilliant recordings 🙏🏽😇

Please do not take offense, but I hope you are not using "and drop them" as a method. If you go into the observation and inquiry with the extremely subtle intention or idea to "drop them", then it is a method, brought about by memory and carried out by the observer/thinker.

Listening to Jiddu Krishnamurthy's words, it is evident that he practiced what Buddha preached, without attaching any name or person to practice. This non attachment is so essential for liberation, not knowledge of books or devotion towards anyone, though they are necessary in the beginning. Problem is, we get stuck with devotion and knowledge, get conditioned, and dare not take the next step of detaching ourselves from the same. Attachment to our beliefs, knowledge, is what gives rise to these discussions. JK was a world teacher indeed.

36:32 I had realized the same thing yesterday & it can't come effortlessly. becuase we have trained our mind to think constantly. We are very occupied that our mind never gets a chance to rest. Its constantly running. In order to reduce the speed of the mind, there is only one way. it is that spare 30mins or an hour daily. sit somewhere & do nothing. Let the thoughts comes, they will go eventually after a few seconds. then another will come, it will also go after a few seconds. It can only bother you if you catch that thought. If you catch the thought, it will make you think, but if you stay still, nd just see. it won't have any effect on you. Eventually after few days, max 7. you will come to a state of mind where you will have the full control of your mind. Thoughts won't be random. It will only take place if you want to think something. Its an extraordinary thing that one should experience once in a lifetime.

Khrishnamurti teaching doesn't come with a warning label. Here's the problem: unloooked for. this great energy suddenly comes and it's so overwhelming that one finally retreats. Khrishnamurti isn't the only one who has experienced the 'process ' .Then you have the " doctrine ' no teacher, your on your own. One gets stuck. This happened to me in 1980 and several times since even to the point where Conciousness opened up and smashed. You pull back. One gets stuck. I'm not the only one this has happened to. Khrishnamurti said that something new had come forth from the teaching. I kept my sanity, I saw a man who had seen the very worse of madness and all that. He was very rattled. It's doctrinair to say don't get help and have a teacher. Not to be enslaved but not be stuck. In any case, I feel this is happening on a global scale now.

Not as to simplify, or merely compare, yet as a way of understanding: I think Nagarjuna’s teachings of “Sunyata,” are very close to what Krishnamurti is pointing to with “non-identification.” The only challenge with not naming sources, or making scholarly footnotes, is that historically great thinkers have already existed, come to certain insights, which I cannot help but appreciate.

People forget that in the first instance, The Buddha wondered if he should teach his insight, knowing that it was unteachable, and even more so would be "going against the stream" should he attempt it. So, he spoke to some deer, to try it out. They stood there, rapt with his words. He then decided that to teach was better than not, as if he could at least affect the deer in a way that might increase their chance of obtaining insight, perhaps it would work with people. It is said over and over that The Path itself is illusion, but it's a slightly better illusion than most as it hurts us less to indulge in than most illusions, while also giving a kind of negative impetus away from hurting ourselves through meditation. Meditation is simply an exercise that increases our chance of stumbling over the solution, but in and of itself has no value in discovering truth. The Path is simply a child like and simple illusion that hurts us less than other things, because it is not inflammatory, and limits the sensation that usually brings larger harm. That's it. The Path is illusion and hurtful, and truth is not found on it. It is just a simple companion that holds us gently while we attempt to see truth. The Path is itself negated by truth, and even the illusion that it IS a path goes away, somehow. That fact is supposed to be held, even while practicing it. It is futile, but less so many others. This is what is the objection to reification of The Path ( or any path ) as an actual cure. It is not.

Can one listen without identification. Only one with no experiences can do this. Krishnamurti asks a lot of good questions but I have always had problems with his answers and the way he answers. A person who sees danger can react in many different ways dependent on the individual. A single reaction cannot be considered as a fact. He says he does not want anyone to tell him how to think but seems to want to tell Moslems, Christians and Buddhists how to think. I tried to read one of his books over two decades ago, definitely thought provoking but but he seemed to lack sincerity. However it is a pleasure listening to him unfortunately I am never able to agree with him!

Closing my eyes, I'm trying to reach imaginary goals, an idea, an escape, a reality better than the present one. Do you think nature, this body has anything to do with your desire or wants and cravings or imaginary ideas or naming of its part as brain and heart? Does a brain know that it's a brain or just a name fed in the brain itself? Not being able to reach the goal, you declare yourself defeated and a failure and call the existence futile but is it the existence that is futile or your attempt and efforts at existence that were futile. They were bound to be do because you are trying to save something for yourself which had never been yours. Thought, which is a result of knowledge, which is a memory in brain itself, and knowledge which is a fragment itself, because it is never complete. If you don't identify with your nationality, then would you ever react to a Pakistan's derogation towards you? Nope. It's you who are reacting. If you aren't there, is there a problem? Nope. You can have myriad of illusion about yourself, that you are thjs, you are that, but it's all in your head. Doesn't exist outside. Why torment yourself then? Why expecting and escaping? Me is the problem. Me is that, me is not that, I'd be chaste, but have urges, I'm this and I'd be that. All are reactions. Thought has no future. Not beginning of a me, ending and picking up again later. This has happened with you so many times. Stop that activity for a day and then get back at it. why to attempt stopping then and wasting energy.

I think the 'me' is important to some extent. So the sake of survival. If you look at small kids.. you can thier ego is at thier peak... But when they grow old it's supposed to stop and they're supposed to become enlightened... But it's our conditioning thats stopping us... If we look at closely we can see that all our desires are out of our ego.. all the wants.. we have.. THOUGHTS created it...

@@aseemap8308 Actually, kids have almost no ego. I can remember my childhood, it was the most beautiful part of my life. Children do not have beliefs, do not have goals, there is no identification for a child. They don't have any religions, say them e.g Sky is the God and they listen and accept it and make a fantasy about it. ( It's from my own experience, Actually, my childhood environment and events were so hard that if there was a strong ego at those ages, I would definitely commit suicide! )

Why is it always a competition. Ones right the other wrong. O look how wrong that monk is oh how brilliant the other so ingeniously dismantled his opponent. What is this? Intelligence becomes a way to assert dominance and projection into another to identify vicarious power but I only say this because I've learned this by doing this myself and so foolish!

As long as there is identification there is no love, identification is the root cause of the self/observer/thinker, saying this is my wife, this my dog, my house - this builds the whole structure of the "me" - In turn all the human miseries stem from the self, do you see that? do you see the danger in identifying with anything, be an idea, ideal (become famous, rich, succuss), a country? if you do this is finished. Is that death? You are nothing without your identifications, your experiences, your beliefs. Is dying while living true love? Braking the wall of the ego, seeing the suffering of all living beings and having unlimited compassion for the misery every single one goes through? ITS THERE ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS LOOK

It seems like Krishnamurti asks a lot of questions but never really waits for an answer (not just in this video but in many others). I totally understand this gimmick (I give lectures all the time) but it is not a dialogue. It's mostly a one way street. Saying "are you with me?" and "I wonder if you're following" and then plowing through is a very impatient thing to do. Why say things like "can we do this together" , "can we inquire", etc. and then proceed to sermon? Don't get me wrong, I have little issue with anything JK says aside from thinking that he's needlessly overcomplicating things but it is one path of billions.

I dont get his point.. I wonder if there's really any point in it..except saying confusing\contradictory things which make no sense and one is pushed into forcefully to make out things.. See, can there be self without identification..! Self in itself is identification, who is the one who wants to "experience" things money and all? Who will it be who'll have\go through this experience ? Who will it be who now has had this experience? These all talks about religion, self discovery, god and all, often tend to lead to nothing, but only to make confusions..or may be thats all what it has to offer..!

While talking about "conditioned mind" and by seeing the fact of being a "conditioned mind" as a solution for freeing the mind from condition; the mind is getting conditioned in a different manner. Anything the mind sees as fact leaves the mind to keep enquiring everything in that angle which becomes another conditioning process, is it not? So, as long as one remains in the mind level (thought level) it may be a derivative of "me" thought which is the primordial thought(or movement of mind) when awake from sleep! Remaining in the plane of mind and trying to get thoughtless (movementless) state is not the solution for the problem that is being enquired. Unless one realises an entity which is more significant than mind, which exists even before the mind gains inertia, thereby the mind becomes less significant to the individual who wishes to free himself/ herself effortlessly. One more thing; we must realise that the mind is made to get conditioned (indirectly) while trying to ignore the Gurus, Bhisop, Buddha, Ramakrishna, Ramana Maharshi etc So from the above two points, we continue to condition the mind while seeing the fact(with a seeing effort) and then we condition the mind while ignoring the true scholars who have dealt with the same subject matter philosophycally( not as a belief). One more information, Upanishads with Adavaita in view makes oneself to get a state of being by releasing from the "false self/me". Here also one has to enquire in the line of Upanishads with Adavaita philosophy, JK guides in a different approach. Upanishads don't talk blindly about God as a system of belief. So we cannot trivialise Veda by concluding it as a conditioning agent of mind. Like every system got corrupted by belief/dogmas Hinduism also got mixed up with superstitions which one should ignore while examining Upanishads with the help of Advaita vision. As long as one's mind is like a clean slate, the intellect is awake to the facts, one need not be conservative in admitting the views of any Guru or the preacher for examination, like one admits JK's enquiry stuff and gets properly guided towards the objective of the subject matter !

Can someone please explain the following: Is not non-identification with sensations contradictory to "the observer is the observed"? Along the lines of; I'm not angry - I am anger. P.s. Great talk. Thanks!
@alizarringhalam4759
@alizarringhalam4759 6 жыл бұрын
I don't think it is contradictory. When you say you are angry, that implies there is an observer (the me) watching the observed (the anger). But the observer is an image, put together by thought, and therefore there is identification with thought. Whereas when you are the anger, there's no observer, and therefore no identification. It is only after the anger is gone, that the observer is back, remembering there was anger. At the time of the anger, there was no identification because neither the observer nor the observed existed.
@Navenanthen
@Navenanthen 6 жыл бұрын
Ali Zarringhalam Thank you for the reply! If I remember correctly, the contradiction I'm referring to is that when K talks about sensations the tables seem to be turned: When it comes to sexual arousal, as mentioned in the clip, the sensation is instantly identified and then "non-identified" with -> I'm not sexual arousal.
@alizarringhalam4759
@alizarringhalam4759 6 жыл бұрын
So if I understand correctly, you are saying is when you are not identified with the feeling, then the observer is not the observed. But can't we be not identified with the feeling, and yet be so attentive to it, that there's no observer and no observed but just pure observation?
@Navenanthen
@Navenanthen 6 жыл бұрын
Ali Zarringhalam The point I'm trying to make is that there seems to be choice involved regarding when "the observer is the observed" and when the observer is not the observed. F.ex. when observing anger; the observer is the observed. But when observing sexual arousment, the observer is not the observed. So, there seems to be preferences for when "the observer is the observed" depending on the type of emotion/sensation.
@alizarringhalam4759
@alizarringhalam4759 6 жыл бұрын
I agree that some emotions and feeling are much stronger than the others. But let's consider a simple example that K uses all the time: watching a tree without the observer. I know even that's hard to do if there's a lot going on in mind (worries, problems, other stuff...) Obviously watching ourselves without the observer is much more subtle and difficult.

THE SIMPLICITY OF LOVE Do you understand what simple love is? Not the complexity of sexual love, nor the love of God, but just love, being tender, really gentle in one's whole approach to all things. At home, you don't always get this simple love, your parents are too busy; at home there may be no real affection, no tenderness, so you come here with that background of insensitivity and you behave like everybody else. And how is one to bring about sensitivity? Are you interested in all this? You should be. If you are not interested in being sensitive, you might as well be dead -- and most people are. Though they eat three meals a day, have jobs, procreate children, drive cars, wear fine clothes, most people are as good as dead. Do you know what it means to be sensitive? To be sensitive is to feel for people, for birds, for flowers, for trees -- not because they are yours, but just because you are awake to the extraordinary beauty of things. And how is this sensitivity to be brought about? To love is the most important thing in life. But what do we mean by love? When you love someone because that person loves you in return, surely that is not love. To love is to have that extraordinary feeling of affection without asking anything in return. You may be very clever, you may pass all your examinations, get a doctorate and achieve a high position, but if you have not this sensitivity, this feeling of simple love, your heart will be empty and you will be miserable for the rest of your life. Now how is this love to come into being? Surely, love must begin with the educator, the teacher. If, besides giving you information about mathematics, geography or history, the teacher has this feeling of love in his heart and talks about it, if in his conversation, in his work, in his play, when he eats, when he is with you or by himself, he feels this strange thing and points it out to you often, then you will also know what it is to love. You may have a clear skin, a nice face, you may wear a lovely sari, or be a great athelete, but without love in your heart you are an ugly human being, ugly beyond measure; and when you love, whether your face is homely or beautiful, it has a radiance. To love is the greatest thing in life; and it is very important to talk about love, to feel it, to nourish it, to treasure it, otherwise it is soon dissipated, for the world is very brutal. If while you are young you don't feel love, if you don't look with love at people, at animals, at flowers, when you grow up you will find that your life is empty, you will be very lonely, and dark shadows of fear will follow you always. But the moment you have in your heart this extraordinary thing called love and feel the depth, the delight, the ecstasy of it, you will discover that for you the world is transformed. - Jiddu Krishnamurti
