The mutual respect between the younger and older generation is absolutely amazing. Notice that even oka-san's, natori, all bow to each other, even to 1st year maiko. They all look so happy :)
I really hope they could stay traditional forever, and not being influenced heavily by European culture to forget their root like my home country Vietnam. We are also part of the Sinosphere but after too many wars, nothing left, young generation have no ideas about their tradition. I really appreciate Japan that keeping all those, a really big thing to learn from.

I remember the very first time I visited Kyoto, maybe twelve years ago, after having studied several books about the city beforehand. I could only stay for about 4 days, so I planned each hour, from about 5am each day., often taking the expensive taxi to maximize the time I could spend there. After having memorable moments at Yasaka Jinja, Kiyomizudera, Sanjusangendo, Fushimi Inari, Ryoanji, and Kinkakuji, before the first night came, my feet felt compelled to wander restlessly in Gion at night, tracing my way through the busy street lights to Hanamikoji Dori, where the famous Ichiriki Ochaya stands, like a monument from my deepest dreams. I stood in front of the curtained entrance, just awe-struck, wondering if it could still be in operation. At that very moment, after few seconds, a painted face paced out from there, who expressed no surprise at me just standing right in front of here as she exited. Without a further thought, I impetuously chased her (she stepped so quickly), asking in desperate tourist English, "Excuse me. I'm sorry to to bother you. I traveled from Canada and I was wondering if you would be so kind to pose for just one photo for me." With no attempt to hide her annoyance at my gesture, she herself gestured a clear "one" with her finger, speaking very quickly in Japanese, and stood there, posing for me in the middle of Hanamikoji Dori, the center of the tea district, and I fidgetingly put my camera on night setting, and snapped one permanent pictorial memento of that beautiful moment in time. She looks celestial in it, I assure you, the very picture of beauty itself. A year later I moved to Japan, lived there for 8 years, and have travelled to Kyoto about 8 times also since, sometimes through typhoons on a moped. I am back in Canada now, but I still dream of retiring as a gardener in the northern countryside there, either near Hieizan or Sagano. It has always been my favourite city in the world since.

I often wonder what am I doing here in the Netherlands? ;-) I just love Japan
