I've been enjoing their CD's with Bachmusic full of crispy rythm, which must be the basis for any good musicmaking, as a reflection of the laws ot nature of which we ourselves are part of as children born out of stardust. And besides that their enthousiasm, dedication and playfull risks they take...Majestic !!

Re: debate on tempo. I dont usually have parts of my anatomy twitching to this music, but this time I do. Feet, hands, all compulsively moving. I'd say that's a vote for this being a great tempo for a dance movement.

Since Bach did not indicate a particular tempo, how can ANYONE declare the tempo to be incorrect? The increased tempi bring more life to a couple of the movements IMO. This is easily my favorite BC recordings.

Mark Thurman, There is one of two ways to look at the no tempo indicated. The baroque tempo are derived from the time signature or that the first movement is understood to be Allegro as the Concerto was an Italian form and the movements were invariably Allegro with rare (and indicated) exceptions. J S Bach's Organ Transcription of the Vivaldi's Violin Concerto for 2 obbligato solo violins Op 3 no. 8 omits the Allegro tempo indication which is clearly marked in the Original publication, which is in Common Time. The time signature for the first movement of the third Brandy Concerto is cut time (a C (symbol for the slower common time) with a vertical line through it), which is the equivalent of 2/2, alla breve or in English called Cut Time, played quicker. Either way almost all performers of Baroque Groups and Baroque solo performers play, to use a term borrowed from physics "Damn Fast," (too damn fast) which translates into J S Bach on amphetamines. The Harpsichordist Jean Rondeau is especially guilty of this today as Anthony Newman was 40 years ago. Although the virtuoso performance wins the loudest applause, the first movement has some very intriguing, interplay (the violas go above the violins in the opening tutti) between the 3 violins, 3 violas, and 3 cellos, plus a good deal of counterpoint that's lost or missed when played at a great clip. This piece was reworked as the Sinfonia to Cantata; Ich liebe den Höchsten von ganzem Gemüte, BWV 174 with the addition of two Natural Horns, and three Oboes, which wouldn't work in church played at a breakneck speed.

I recall reading that Goebel and MAK seldom, if ever, performed this piece live, because Goebel didn't think they could ever match this recording...I suspect that's just a rumor, but a plausible one...

first part is for sure not too fast, it goes alla breve not 4/4. I think the third part is too fast, but the effect is nice and they do make their point with it

not too fast, as it is a 12/8 Giga. Unfortunately Bach writes 16 notes, but that ist really fast. All the other Gigues (Gigas) are mostly in 8notes...

Me parece que estos músicos están totalmente borrachos al tocar los allegros tan rápidamente. Alguien les dijo que es música barroca y no rock and roll? Qué necesidad hay de tocar tan rápido? O les urgía ir al baño? Cada nota de esos allegros debe ser destacada y tocada para que se entienda acompasadamente. No es un concurso de velocidad y virtuosismo tocar a Bach. Además, pobres músicos que deben tocar a los santos pedos.

Escuchame Fausto Papetti: vos no sabés acaso que la música barroca hace apenas unas tres o cuatro décadas que empezó a tocarse correctamente con instrumentos originales etc.? Exacto: antes había total desinformación, no adornaban los movimientos lentos ni nada. Además yo pregunto: quién te dio vela en este entierro? Metete en lo tuyo, opiná por vos mismo, no te dirijas a alguien en particular, en este caso a mi. Opinás y nada más.

Mirá nomás cómo ejecuta este conjunto al Cannon de Pachelbel también a los recontrasantos pedos. Llega un punto en que no se entiende mada. Son virtuosos obviamente.
